Exactly 200 years ago this Christmas Eve — December 24, 1818 — in a little church in what is now Austria, the world heard for the first time a poem set to music that eventually would be hailed as one of the most popular and beloved Christmas carols of all time.

In addition....

For any of you living in the US mainland or Canada there is a wonderful place in Michigaan called Bronners Christmas Wonderland. Is a great get-a-way just for the shopping alone.....

Bronner's CHRISTmas Wonderland
25 Christmas Ln, Frankenmuth, MI 48734

They have a life sized chapel dedicated to Silent Night. You can actually go in. It is quite moving.

Silent Night Chapel at Bronner's

Bronner's Silent Night Memorial Chapel, a 56-foot-tall landmark, is nestled on the southern tip of Bronner's 27 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. It is a replica of the original chapel in Oberndorf/Salzburg, Austria, which marks the site where "Silent Night" was first sung on Christmas Eve in 1818.

Bronner's chapel is open daily - during store hours for visitation and meditation, but is not available for ceremonies. No charge for admission.

It was 1818. In the little town of Oberndorf, Austria, the St. Nicholas church was plagued by a broken organ. It seemed it would be a silent night... But out of that silence rang a song, collaborated from the hearts of two men, that would change the world forever... This is the story of the "Silent Night" CHRISTmas carol, and the memorial chapels erected in its honor.

You can see pics of the outside at their link here.
