I guess I won't win the prize tonight  :( All I can think of are the pardons that were sold.

And I so desparately want to win something!

I have no earthly idea, I saw it in Becket, but I'm not at all sure that it ever really happened.

Monastics used to have a little cord whip they used on themselves called the discipline.

And in some small villages in Northern New Mexico there are small groups called Penitentes that practice self-flagelation (sp?) and even crucifixion, but not to the point of death.

The RC hierarchs opposed them for years and they went underground.

James Rondon

The terms scourging and flagellation also come to mind...

charlie

It's called flagellation, or purging.

Yes, and not to be confused with flatulation and purging ?:D[/quote]
   Oh that was a good one! I just about sprayed chewed up potato chip on my keyboard.

janine

Humph.  Yet another contest Janine doesn't win.

Ol' Rondon wins the prize.

Which he will have to administer to himself, since we can't reach through our monitors.

I hope he doesn't wrench his whip arm.

janine

Yeah, everyone knows someone like that.

At times, everyone's been someone like that.

There are still lots of folks out there who only flagellate others, though. :frowning:

Just a quick question because I don't have time to research it tonight and I'm on the road, away from the office:

What is (was) it called when you went to the priests or monks to let them beat you for your sins?

It's not forced contrition--that's when the beat you until you repented. The beatings I speak of were part of the pentance.
When I hear the answer, I know I'm going to feel really stupid but hey--it's been a long week.

Be the envy of all your friends by being the first to answer correctly!  I have no parting gifts for you, but you can feel free to pat yourself on the back if you help.

Excuse the spelling... I'm in a hurry.

Thanks!

I'm not 100% on this, but might you be referring to "attrition"?

perhaps I mean so... contirtion, atrition/pentance, penance... they get jumbled in my mind without resources at my fingertips.  (obviosly due to my many learning disabilities--namely forgetfullness) I'm at a buddies computer in Big D area so I all out of sync and far from home.

It's actually like what Big Texson is talking about.  There are/were manostary's still doing it in recent times in the southwest.  It works like this--you go to these guys and they take the cords and you kneal down and pray whilst they shalack ya'.  Doing it to yourself has a different name, too--I think.  Man!  There's no place like home is there?

david johnson

...i think the apt term is 'kinky'..... :0
you put it on video and it's porno, you do it for 'church' concerns and it's a demonstration of sincere spirituality.

I had forgotten about the applications where someone else would flagellate you.  Many of the people I deal with are really, really good at (figurative) self-flagellation.  That may explain why the ol' brain uses only that one concept in the field.

Hunh.  Beat the people, that 's one way to make 'em penitent...

[!--EDIT|patriciaredstone|Jan. 14 2003,12:11--]

Still away from home, but thankful for all the help.

flagellation it shall be and it appears that Rondon was the first so he wins a "self-flagulating" er, uh, "self-congratulating" pat on the back.

No pain, no gain.  eh?

If anybody is still reading this thread I have another something to toss about.  Don't you know people who do flagellate themselves emotionally... mentally?

Why do we see so many of us "beating ourselves up" over our past sins?  Maybe ya'll have talked about this before--if so, just refer to the rookie.
