Can anyone give me a definition of what a will is?

A will as in free will?

Texas Conservative

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear, I will choose Freewill

The mental faculty that allows one to fix a purpose, pursue that purpose, and persevere until that purpose is accomplished.

4WD

Free will, in the theological sense, is the ability to choose whether or not to obey God's law.

Thanks 4WD... but I am looking for something a little more deep.

In a debate you are familiar with on "Free" I did the obligatory battle of definitions, etc.

But now was challenged with  this

I had said." Now wouldn't it be silly to just say will?

And then was asked ....Why? What is a will?

Your definition is appropriate for Free will....

Thanks for your thoughts

A biblical definition (meaning, one that actually comes out of the Bible) can be found in the context of "free will offerings" in the law of Moses, and it's referenced in the Psalms. It refers to an option put in front of you that doesn't have a threat of negative consequences. If you failed to offer an obligatory sacrifice in the law, which is NOT a free will offering, you would be punished for failing to do something that was an obligation. A free will offering is something one might choose to do without the pressure of negative consequences.

That's the definition of "free will" in everyday speech: I wasn't "forced" to do it, as opposed to "I had no choice but to do it" because the alternative had obvious and unacceptably high negative consequences.

Free will theology is a completely different concept, glorifying the ability to choose between something very obviously right and good versus something that blatantly results in negative consequences.

In the biblical and daily definition of "free will," if someone held you at gunpoint for your money and you gave it, one would say that you didn't give it of your own "free will" but were forced. Free will theology says that you exercised your free will anyway because your free will affords you a theoretical capacity to choose getting shot over giving your money to someone who threatens you.

Thank you Cally,

There are a group at another Forum who are so certain there is zero free will and I have been challenged beyond reason.....

I am laying off it for a while and looking for another 2nd forum along with GC.

If you want to read what is said there on the subject you dont have to join... this is the link...

https://christcentered.community.forum/threads/free-will-yet-again.2001/

A lot of reading but sure lets one know of the opinions out there.

So amazing that there are opinions of all sorts on everything....
That in itself should prove without question there is free will of thought.

Thanks again

I didn't read the other thread yet, but I neglected to mention what I referred to as "free will theology" isn't substantiated by the Bible at all. Some people will rant that it's implied, but it isn't: everyone knows the concept of choices.

"Free will," referring to the extra biblical theology, indeed doesn't exist because of the simple concept that a created thing can only do what it is created to do, no more and no less. That would include the way a person "makes choices." "Nature vs nurture" is usually an overcomplicated discussion that boils down to the conclusion that people are ongoing creations from the outside in, and then behave from the inside out, based on ongoing creation, how a person starts as well as how continued influences continue his creation.

One more thing, about this: different opinions or people making different choices doesn't imply "free will" theology at all. It would imply that people are made differently in ways that cause them to think differently -- and yes, choose differently.

That cannot be correct.  If the above version of "free will" is true, then God could not hold anyone accountable for sin because they would simply be doing what God designed them to do.  So nothing anyone does would be a sin.  That is obviously not the way it works, biblically.  It would also mean that Jesus' death on the cross was completely unnecessary and to no effect because sin would not exist in the above scenario.  No one is designed to make pre-conceived choices.  That kind of flawed logic is ludicrous.

I would call attention to the word "MADE" here:

Romans 9:19-23
19 You will say to me then, "Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?" 20 But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, "Why have you MADE me like this?" 21 Has the potter no right over the clay, to MAKE out of the same lump done vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? 22 What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, 23 in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory

You are merely playing the part of the same protester who Paul anticipated to this fact: a creation can only do what its creator made it to do, no more, no less, which includes the choices people make.

A good one, and I have that saved.

But they do not want to really know... they just want to pile on me.

So Ill play for a while and then drop it cause they cannot understand
the meaning or how it applies to us,

This may truly be the first time that I might say God??? blinded them.

Especially when after all the posts with every solid definition , including part of Cottrells , I keep being told I never explain free or free will

My dear sweet sister rella, I have posted at the site you are having trouble with and yes they are hard headed. I gave up trying to reason with them. Good luck because all your truth you give will be hard for them to wrap their heads around. Their minds have been made up and they cannot see it any other way.

Boy, that is the truth...

Long story.

I signed up on a different forum when GC was down so long and someone on that forum recommended the one we both know.

I was no there long because  short of being banned I got chased off
when I ran out of talking points.... (Think predestination)

So I went back to the other one... GC was still down... and I actually made a good home there in a way. People are tough there but
they debate civilly and not in a gang up manner.

Well... you won't likely remember... or maybe you will.. back a good 8-9-10 years ago a member here... NO LONGER HERE and will not be named.... called me a witch from Pittsburgh.

Suffice that to be enough description.

When I was forum hunting when GC was down I ran across their user name a couple of times... but not reent posting from them More like 2020.

So Imagine one day about 6 weeks ago when I went to reply on that forum came

"You have been banned for the following reason: Amanda the witch. Using a false name." (I suspect the one who called me a withc here
is using a new name and saw my Rella and thought to make my life miserable. Sad thing is there is no way I can find out and one person who was trying to help got nowhere)

So I went back over to the other one and have been so ever since.

And now you know the rest of the story.

I prefer it here but need a bit more activity while I am house bound caring for my dementia mom....

Blessings

OK, I know CB is the one that banned you for no reason.  You can probably get back there if you try - I know someone there who was banned and got it reversed.

What's the other one?  TOL?  CFO?  I think we all post at other forums after the long shutdown here.

Apologetics is the current one. They seem to be a spin off from CB.

As does.

I dont know the ones you suggest.

No, I cannot get back on because I can make no contact what soever.
A person who had contacts on both tried but after 2 or 3 tries
they would not even reply to her.

So whoever did it... and I am reasonably sure I know... will keep me blocked... especially if they are a mod... of which there are an incredible number of them there.

He's the same one who told everyone here I was possessed by the spirit of Jezebel and spread all kinds of fanciful tales. At the time, it really upset me but not now. I just don't care. However, I'm truly sorry if he's continued spreading wild tales and accusations at other forums to  get you blocked, Rella. I can testify that you're NOT a witch!  ::noworries:: You'd think that after a decade, he'd calm down with the bitterness and histrionics, but maybe not.  ::shrug::

Yes, and it is so frustrating that any forum would not at the minimum leave a contact door open briefly so one could find out about the charge.

I will never find him now anywhere because he is obviously using a new user name.
