@DaveW

I copied this from your reply in the Prophecy of Ezekiel 9 thread because your reply struck a note on something for me....

Quote from: DaveW on Mon Dec 23, 2024 - 11:18:02Actually ALL of Hebrew scripture has multiple levels of meaning.  The rabbis of the first century BC recognized that and divided up the meanings into 4 categories.  PRDS.  Stands for Pardes (plain meaning) Remez (what is hinted at)  Derash (a teaching that can be culled) and Sod (the mystical meaning).  Most of what we call allegory or symbolic falls into the latter category. We westerners find one we like and insist it is the ONLY meaning, which is not true at all. All 4 levels are true.

Alrighty then.

One I have been musing with is Isaiah 9:6 and perhaps you can explain why the discrepancies..... in translations. There is a lot copied from the link provided below and it appears that basically once the modern ( any that are KJV and newer ) were translating they came upon a translation that was not the case back in the day.
I know you likely will not read all of this but at least get through the common translation and into some of the others below that to see what I mean, please.

Isaiah is Old Testament. That is fact.

Isaiah was a major prophet. That is fact.

Isiah, the book is said to have been written 739 and 681 B.C. and a good 700 years before Jesus. That is also alleged fact.

NOW....

If we read what the modern day translators have written concerning
Isaiah 9:6 we see the following.

The following being only some of the not well talked about translations and then 3 of the common ones....(I did not want to post all of them from Bible Hub... you can look for yourselves.

Young's Literal Translation
For a Child hath been born to us, A Son hath been given to us, And the princely power is on his shoulder, And He doth call his name Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Father of Eternity, Prince of Peace.

Smith's Literal Translation
For a child was born to us, a son was given to us, and the dominion shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, everlasting Father, Captain of Peace.

Douay-Rheims Bible
For a CHILD IS BORN to us, and a son is given to us, and the government is upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counsellor, God the Mighty, the Father of the world to come, the Prince of Peace.

Lamsa Bible (Aramaic)
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder: and his name is called Wonderful Counsellor, The Mighty One, The Everlasting God, The Prince of Peace.

Peshitta Holy Bible Translated
Because the Child is born to us, and the Son is given to us, and his authority was on his shoulder, and his Name was called The Wonder and The Counselor, God, the Mighty Man of Eternity, the Prince of Peace [and The Father of Eternity]

And most interesting is the JW biblical choice...

The New World Translation
For a child has been born to us, A son has been given to us; And the rulership* will rest on his shoulder. His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Not the run of the mill KJV, NIV, or NAS95

King James Bible
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

New International Version
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

NASB 1995
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

These all basically say the same thing. They suggest that Isaiah prophesied about a son being born yada,yada....

But hold on.......

WHY IS IT THAT THE MORE HEBREW TRANSLATIONS INTO HEBREW TEXTS
ARE SO DIFFERENT.

JPS Tanakh 1917
For a child is born unto us, A son is given unto us; And the government is upon his shoulder; And his name is called Pele-joez-el-gibbor-Abi-ad-sar-shalom;

Brenton Septuagint Translation
For a child is born to us, and a son is given to us, whose government is upon his shoulder: and his name is called the Messenger of great counsel: for I will bring peace upon the princes, and health to him.

Tanaka
5For a child has been born to us, a son given to us, and the authority is upon his shoulder, and the wondrous adviser, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, called his name, "the prince of peace."

And the Lexham Septuagint:

Isaiah 9:6 (LES): Because a child was born to us; a son was given to us whose leadership came upon his shoulder; and his name is called "Messenger of the Great Council," for I will bring peace upon the rulers and health to him.

Hi Rella.   That verse has been kicked around for many centuries.   As I said, Hebrew has various levels of meaning and the majority of these translations are on the Peshat (plain meaning) level.

BTW, be suspicious of any transliteration of Scripture original languages that uses the letter J.  It (both the sound and the letter) did not exist in any language before before about 1000 ad.

And also be leery of the Septuagint.  It was a Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures, originally commissioned by Alexander the Great so he could read the 5 books of Moses.  But it is slanted toward a Greek mindset.

As to the discrepancies, I would take them mostly on what the translator was trying to say, and in the very modern ones (post 1900) trying to avoid copyright issues with other versions.

What do you see as problematic?

From my understanding of it the JPS is correct, except for using that J.

Pele Yoetz El gibor Avi ad Sar shalom.

His name is all of that.
