:amen:

What we have to get over though is our insistence on speaking of God the same way.

I presume that everyone is OK with Booty's congregation not holding services in proper English and will permit the church in Japan to speak in Japanese or Crocless church to speak whatever strange bizarre version of English it is that they speak  :p

Yet we demand conformity within our borders.

Whether we be formal  :priest:
or contemporary  :playingguitar:

We just need to speak to those who we are reaching to in their language.

Yank doesn't bother me a bit, although yankee would.
I am sometimes referred to as a gringo, and that doesn't trouble me much either.   I know that Christians in Mexico sometimes call us Los hermanos gringos, and they don't mean anything malicious by it.

Very few citizens of the USA are aware that Mexico is officially
Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos.
Hey not so boring old guy, greetings from the land of beer and cheese.  "Yank" does not bother me as a way of referring to the good ole USA.  Some classic movies revel in the notion ("Yankee Doodle Dandy"; "Sgt. York" among many others).

But your comment about most folks not knowing the name of our southern neighbors should surprise no one!  Most "Yanks" also do not know basic geography of the world.  Our ignorance is displayed routinely on Jay Leno with his interviews on the street.  It is frightening.  To few will sit and read a  :reading:   The founders believed that a democracy (or technically a Republic) could only thrive if the citizens were in the know.  What would Uncle Ben think??

We had a Texan teacher here who maintained the war wasn't over, yet.  He said that Lee surrendered, not him.

Bill, substitute state for tribe and Kenya sounds familiar, doesn't it?

The announcers gushed about how all Americans were rooting for New York against the team from the UK. My response was BULL! I'd root for Moscow before I'd root for a team from New York or LA.

Jets, Mets, Nets, Giants, Yankees, Knicks, Rangers, Islanders, Lakers, Clippers, Dodgers, and Kings are all on my permanent distaste for list. Thanks to moving vans the Rams, Raiders, and Chargers are off the list (though rumor has it the Chargers might be back on).
Bite your tongue! Don't hate us cause were good. We can't be blamed for the lack of any viable sports commodity in Arkansas! :frowning: I'm a die-hard LA guy and I married a foxy mama from NY! (I constantly tell people that I saved her from hell and brought her to heaven. Yeah they laugh too.)

Oh yeah, thanx for the warm fuzzies over on the other thread. I appreciate them. :noddingsmiley:

Booty,  goodness!  I can only speak for myself, but none of the terms you mentioned in your initial post on the thread would offend me.  Call me a Yank and /or a Southerner. Say I live in the US, the USA or America. Call me a woman, a girl, a chick, or hey you. Call me honey, darlin', sweetie or toots. I don't *care*! Life is too short. JMO, FWIW!

I actually grew up with the LS after the sermon, and was an adult before I realized this was an unscriptural practice! :0

But of course we all partook of the LS scripturally when someone had to leave the service before the sermon.  Then we would adjust our schedule so they could partake before leaving for their vacation/weddding/funeral/picnic/elective surgery, so they would not miss communion and jeapordize their souls. :sarcasim:

I don't care as long.....

As you don't call me late for dinner.

Now don't any of you go around tryin' to YANK anyone's chain now!

I get called "fool" all the time.  "Yank" would be nice for a change.  I certainly don't like being called a Rebel (I'm from TX) and am glad the south did not win the Civil War.

Nevertheless

Spanish class in high school was, er, interesting!  For a year and a half we had a teacher who knew her Spanish, but her major was English, so she taught Spanish much like she taught English grammar.  We got used to they way she taught and everything went along smoothly until they decided to change teachers on us in the middle of the year.  The new teacher was undoubtedly more fluent in Spanish, having grown up in Guatemala, but she changed everything!  She wanted us to pronounce words the way they were said where she grew up.  I thought at the time it was somewhat like a Mexican learning English from a Cockney or a hillbilly, or maybe a New York cab driver!

I think we are going to have to have a 6 month Wednesday night study on this Supper after the Sermon business to determine what NT practice was, or which particular passages can be used to decide the issue.

I guess we should set aside our training in evangelism for a while.  I am concerned that we may not be as close to the NT pattern as we should be.  Alternatively this could be more liberal theology creeping in from the USA.  What says "The Spiritual Sword" on the issue?
