The Vast Right Wing Conspiracy meets the Great Left Wing Conspiracy.  With that said you want to go out for lunch? ;)

Congratulations!!!  That is great news.  I will pray for you and that situation.  Let your light shine! :D

Alright, Bev!  Go Bevvy! Go Bevvy! Go Bevvy! :D

Speaking as one who has been the lone politically & religiously conservative voice among the others in women's advocacy situations... I can tell you you're in for a bumpy ride.  They'll pooh-pooh you, or freeze you out, or let you speak your piece (ha, I originally said "peace"; what a telling slip!) as a courtesy before they formulate final opinions & statements featuring none of your points at all...

But then, I'm sure you know all that.

The hope for your effectiveness lies in being your own sweet self, "hard" or "conservative" where God would have you to be and soft where He would have you to be.

The others will sense you're trying to reflect His glory, and hopefully will be unable to dismiss you because of that.

Prayers for you!  Prayers that everything,  from "9/11" to your reflection of Christ, will have an effect on people's hearts, & make His will known in the work you'll get done.

BH, I'll have to ask my husband.

Janine, I was the lone Republican on the local Women's Shelter Board of Directors for years. And I am ambivalent about government interference in any but the most clear -cut instances of infringement on our inalienable rights. But, every so often, I'm reminded how mean people can be and how sometimes even the victims need to be given a good talking to or some severe "time out."  (I'm having a hard time on non-violent language, especially since I don't think spanking is necessarily child abuse)

If you can bear the heartbreak and anger, here's an article that seemed to be written for me, and published just today for me (no, I don't have these delusions often):

Mark Steyn compares the crime of Sept 11 to rape. You may be surprised how good the analogy is:

Thank you Lord for the wise selection you have made. Please fill Bev with your Holy Spirit as she goes forth in the ministry that You have assigned her. Amen

Bev,

Print this out and tuck it in your purse love,

1.  The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2.  He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3.  He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4.  Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5.  Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup Runneth over.
6.  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Bless you

Beverley, Congratulations and good luck.  As an elected prosecutor, I recently attended a week-long seminar put on by a nationally renowned agency on prosecution of family violence offenses.  I have to tell you these people have a very pro-feminist, anti-male agenda.  Everything is black and white...there are no shades of gray.  I'm not suggesting by any means that I am soft on male vs. female violence...far from it.  But, for example, one speaker cautioned that men should never be allowed on a jury in a family violence case if they said during jury selection that "my wife doesn't work."  It will be interesting if you can report back after your first meeting. :)

I have some news: I'm being appointed to the National Advisory Committee on
Violence Against Women, which is a joint committee under the US Department of
Justice and the Department of Health and Human Services. I'm not sure exactly what
this Committee will do or be able to do, but it's chartered under the Violence Against
Women Act of 1994 and 2000.  (The last administration seems to have done a fairly
good job in their "Toolkit to End Violence Against Women," as far as I can tell.)

I'm afraid I may be the first member kicked off - and I don't know whether it will be
because I think that our society does teach that men have a sense of superiority and
entitlement over women that is based on a false view of the Bible or because I refuse
to teach that any of us are born to be victims and believe that a true Christian life and
love for God and each other is the cure for all the violence in the world.

Please pray for me to be a good witness for Christ (and the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy)

Beverly,

You go, girl.  Excellent opportunity to deal with an unfortunately ongoing crisis.  One would expect Universities to be at the forefront of such efforts.  However, just let one of their star athletes sexually abuse or rape someone and watch them circle to wagons to protect the perp.  Oh well.

Best wishes to you and keep us informed.

Morris

Congratulations, Beverly.  Know that you will make a favorable impact and Christ will be seen in you service.  You are in my prayers.

Sic'em Kiddo!  You got our support.  Really proud of ya!!!

You have been given a rare opportunity to do some real good in this area.  We will be praying for you.

Keep us informed on how things go when you finally get into the committee meetings.

Beverly,

Congratulations! I know you have the strength of mind and the heart of God to express what you know is true about violence against women and children in our culture.

I know you are well read in this area, but I do want to mention two fairly recent books that have been of some help to me as I sort out the psychology and culture from the theology and politics.

Women Survivors: Psychological Trauma and the Politics of Resistance by Norma Jean Profitt (Hawforth Press, 2000) This is pretty left-wing but can be balanced with careful reading. It helped me to understand how society and even psycologists stymie change by promiting the cultural ideal of the "good victims" (which are admonished and rewarded) and the "bad victims" which are marginalised and even ignored. "Good victims" do not demand too much change and "get over it" while "bad victims" transfer the anger and energy of their attackers into "What are we waiting for? Let's change things!" activism. This predjudice against the "bad victim" even exists in human services organisations dedicated to helping abused women. The "bad victims" are the primal scream of a society which has learned to rationalise and even ignore violence and abuse of women and children.

A Return to Modesty by Wendy Shalit is also a great read. She explains how women are being systematically and institutionally abused from childhood through the influence of sex-education programs in the schools which rob girls and boys of the attribute of modesty. It is very well researched and very readable. I recommend it to any parent who really wants to know how their child might respond to school "sexual responsibility" programs.

That's fine and I knew you were married.  Friendship was the motive and he's welcome to come out and eat with us too!

Beverly Nuckols (hocndoc)

It was a joke, irony, BH!

Patricia, I've read Wendy Shallit's book, but not the other. I'll put it on my list.
As to the "good victims" and the "bad victims," I have a bit of that streak in me, too. It's a weakness born of fatique and maybe over-identifying. (That last should be a question?) And, unfortunately there are all those bad choices and habits that keep turning up in the same people. Some blame the victim because we want to be or feel  safe or we want to get some sleep or be able to *fix it.*   I pray for us all to grow up.

Thank you, Wiley. (I think I better be sorta discrete until I'm actually sworn in, and I am afraid of tooting my own horn too much. For instance, I don't think it would help at all to announce on groups that call me "Dr. Beverly")

Booty, thank you.  ("Thy will be done" is my constant prayer, even when I really mean, "My will be done." I pray I can grow up.)

Thanks, hmb,
I wonder how much I will even understand of that first meeting.
I've been given very good advice to "keep your mouth shut, listen, watch and learn" who is really in charge and what the agenda is. Momma said that, too, years ago. Smart women, both.

Hey,

How about an update?  How is it going with this committee?
