Moth to the Light

The analogy is obvious to the point of being trite, nearly.  But, this evening I was floating in our pool watching this huge, brown moth flutter overhead, working his way toward the light shining from the back of the shop, at the end of the pool.  But, between him and the light was an overgrown palm tree blocking the light and his path.

The moth could see the light flickering between the fronds, teasing him onward.  But, the bright green leaves seemed somehow especially delightful and desirable, attractively backlit by the light.  But, they were not the destination, only a distraction and a deterrent.  But, the moth did not detour around the tree, but deliberately dodged his way through, even using them for rest and assistance?!

Once beyond the tree, the moth fluttered, almost defeatedly, trying to scale the white painted wall reflecting the light.  He then fell back, flew in brave circles around the bright halogen light, then alit on the wall.  From a safe distance of a couple of feet, the moth stared into the light, mesmerized, but fixed to the wall, focusing on the light.

Are we drawn to the light?  Why? With what distractions do we contend?  How?
