I remember reading in the bible somewhere about having spiritual gifts that are from God and am not looking to cause a debate, but am rather wanting to clarify the truth of the bible verse Romans 12:6-8. Is it not alright to try to contact spirits for prophecy and to use mediums also for this purpose? It seems that this verse approves this...correct me if I am wrong.

The Holy Spirit is God in spirit in us. Evil spirits are a different matter. Its wrong and dangerous to attempt to contact the dead through mediums or evil spirits. God gives prophecies and other spiritual gifts through the Holy Spirit that is in us.

Can you suggest any books on learning more about this?

I will have a think and get back.

Yes, read the word of God.  Let it be your teacher.

Prophecy from God is different from necromancy.

Have you heard about how Saul spoke to a medium to speak to a dead prophet (Samuel) to GET prophecy?

Mediums are not necessary and are completely different from prophecy received from the Lord. Understanding baptism of the Holy Spirit will be necessary first. I'd say you may be starting your Bible study in the wrong place, especially if there's confusion as to the difference between prophecy and using mediums--yikes! One is good and from God and the other is wicked! So I'd say look into all of the other details about how to be baptized in the Holy Spirit.

Prophecy is nothing more that hearing the Spirit of God speak to you and repeating what you heard.

The prohibition on necromancy and mediums is based on source.  Remember when Adam ate of the forbidden tree and explained to God that he was hiding because he was naked.  God did not argue whether that was true or not, but questioned the source of the information: "Who told you that you were naked?" (Gen 3.11)

To receive supernatural information from God via the Holy Spirit is REQUIRED.  To get it from any other source is FORBIDDEN.

This is one bible verse I have never understood the meaning of...Why would he forbid us to have knowledge?

That is because you are looking at the bible thru western modern eyes and see knowledge as as an abstract concept, devoid of relational value.  Not so.  To Hebrew thought, the source of information was equally important to the veracity of said info.

It is all relational.  If you want knowledge, ask God.

The Holy Spirit is the spirit of God. Receiving God's Spirit washes us and causes us to resemble God--his love ("fruits of the Spirit"), knowledge, and power. A wicked spirit devours and steals, but the Holy Spirit nurtures us and makes us grow and has creative force.

To comment on Genesis, the passage about nakedness is more a matter of perception. When they "realized" they were naked, was it only then that they realized they never put on clothes? Ridiculous. Rather, it was actually the perception of being exposed.

The "knowledge of good and evil" is little more than an understanding of how to foul up. For example, when you drive a car, do you constantly think about all the different sorts of ways you can break traffic laws, or are you mostly focused on getting from point A to point B? Is the knowledge of the law (good) and how to break it (evil) really something you want? Because we'd rather not dwell on such things, but rather set ourselves to good tasks and get them done. The serpent stated that acquiring knowledge would make Eve like God, and that was only partly true--the deception is that knowledge of HOW to defy God does not mean you're in any way able to overpower him.

So Satan tries to entice with "deep secrets" for the same reason. It seems like an ability to escape the law (i.e. magic, seemingly defying natural laws) but that doesn't mean it overpowers God--you're doing business with God's enemies, who are rebels.
