404 errors

I'm having a problem trying to reply to posts.

When I hit post or preview it keeps coming up a 404 error.

It happens a lot when the server gets busy with whomever else is on the thing.

Oh I do!  Unless it's a very short post I prepare it "off-line"

Something that I noticed is that if there is a clickable link that you are copying and pasting that it won't translate for me and I get a 404 error.


Also some fonts are not recognized.


so it can be difficult for copy and pasters of materials. I tried to remove formatting and that was no help at all either.

That's interesting. I tried a short post to then try & modify it. It accepted the short post but then failed when I tried to cut & paste the proper reply..

I thought perhaps it was to do with the length but perhaps the problem is linked to the pasting in of text prepared o/s the forum.

From what I can tell (based on playing with it, not technical expertise), this happens when too many links are included in a post.

There is no rule about number of links in a post, but I would speculate that the server is taking too long parsing the multiple links when we have heavy traffic, and when it times out while trying to do so, you get the error.

Either remove some links or break it up into a few posts, and it should be fine.  At least, that worked for me.

I pm'd Bob (the technical guru) and asked him to take a look at this.  It may take a little time, but I think we can get it figured out.

Please do not give up Winsome, I am on the case now and I can usually fix it quickly when given enough information, but be aware that I run several SMF sites and my time is limited... patience my friend, I'm like an old dog chewing on a bone when it comes to troubleshooting...

FYI I did try on my little netbook in case it was something specific to my desktop PC but but had the same problem.

I have found times when in certain folders I can only post 2 or 3 words at a time.  I can post anything in other forums but there it is limited.

It passes after a few hours to a day or 2.

Almost, there are still some things happening that I need to fix asap, and it is going to require me to put the system in maintenance mode for about 2 - 3 hours within the next week... I will do this in the wee hours so it shouldn't impact too many regulars much, as long as I don't run into complications it should take no longer than that stated...
