Last night had to get up and go to the bathroom. I still have one of the winter space heaters in the hall and half asleep I kicked my toe
into it.... ring toe left foot.

I guess I caught the edge of it cause I ripped the nail almost off. It is ripped back from the front.

It is soooo sore and cannot put on a real shoe.... and I shoved a lot of Neosporin on it and a loose bandage as it is bleeding right now.

Guess I will need to go to the foot doc, and that will be very painful.

At time I truly hate life an this is one of them

But my question is.... if I do not go to the doctor will the nail naturally fall off? Should I maybe soak it often in epsom salts?

Just the thought of the doc giving that shot to numb it, if she even does, truly makes me ill....

Thoughts?

Do you know that some drug stores sell foam rubber shields that slip over your single toe?  They really keep it isolated.

Yes I do and I will get one today, Thanks

With that much damage to your nail, the doc is your safest option. Sorry...

If you decide not to go to the doctor, wrap the toe up and leave the bandage on for as long as possible. It will help with the pain and help the healing process.

If you're concerned about infection, you might consider some oil of oregano capsules. That's what I take now instead of antibiotics. It's a powerful antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory.

I wouldn't bother with the doctor for such an injury, hydrogen peroxide, then neosporin and a bandage.  Of course my wife would attest that any advice I give on when one should seek professional medical help should be treated as highly suspect.

Mine also, I avoid going to the doctor or emergency room unless it's an absolute necessity. I perform self triage these days, my experience over the years comes from self-injuring. I've had enough thread in me to make a nice sweater. Of course my wife is always telling me "you better get that checked"!

I will see her when I take mom next week. Otherwise if I make an appointment I will need to wait or be told to go to
the emergency room.

Thanks

I did that.

I got one of those large bandages that has a square in it a couple of inches wide.

I stick it to the top of 3 toes ( One each side of the bad one) and loosely wrapped it under to the bottom and stuck it there.

Seems reasonable comfortable and then put a white sock on.

I am wearing one of those surgical shoes and will see what happens pain wise tomorrow or Sunday. If no improvement then I wl make an apt... but still will talk to doc when I take mom.

Not really worried about infection.

It was done and not bleeding until after I went back to bed. I only did the Polysporin... or Neo... I forget what I used... beause I wanted
a gooey cushin  under the nail before putting the first bandaid on.... That, of course would not stay in place so I went that really big one.  It does not look particularily bad.... except the nail is not where it should be.... but hurts.

I have oregano oil... oil. It is lethal, I cannot take it.

It came out just fine.

When I took mom to her podiatrist the next week the doc said they normally would  remove the nail.

Now any of you who has ever had a shot in the foot will understand why I said, no... I'll wait to see what happens.

What happened was the nail lifted from the nail bed and I was able to trim it back with no pain.... then eventually all it wook was to file it smooth to avoide snagging on my socks... and now it is perfectly normal.

Great ~ good to hear ~ had toenails go black from ski boot ~ they eventually slufffff off ```

Former AF medic here, and I agree.   Circulation in the toes is not very good and infection is really easy to get and sometimes hard to treat.

Take care of yourself.
