He never had a chance in the first place.  When your entire campaign strategy is bash Trump, you have nowhere to go but down.  Trump will get the nomination, if he isn't in jail, but he won't get elected.

And therein lies the problem.  He is a lame duck but he has millions of lock-step supporters.
