Janine,
I really like the song too.  The first time I heard it, it caught me offguard and I wondered if I had heard what I thought I heard.  You are correct, it is nice to hear us mentioned in a good context in a song like this.

Colin Ray had a song that mentioned the cofc a few years back. I think it was titled, "Little Rock."  The line was "I like the preacher from the church of Christ, sorry that I cried when I talked to you last night."  Many assumed Colin had to be a cofc guy when the song came out, but I saw a segment on him and he is a very active catholic or so the piece said.  Seemed like a genuinely good guy.

Here are some of the words to "My Town", a country song in heavy rotation right now.

This is my town...
Where I was born, where I was raised,
Where I keep all my yesterdays,
Where I ran off 'cause I got mad
And it came to blows with my old man,
Where I came back and settled down,
It's where they'll put me in the ground -
This is my town, this is my town - my town.

There ain't much goin' on here since they closed the mill,
But that whistle still blows every day at noon.
A bunch of us still go down to the diner -
Wonder if that Interstate's still comin' thru?
Come Sunday morning service at the Church of Christ,
There ain't an empty seat to be found.
This is my town.

... We're off to Sunday service at the Church of Christ,
And if we want a seat, we'd better leave right now...

I rather like it.  Other parts mention old landmarks and how they've changed, like the old water tower that used to feature "I love Jenny"... now the tower's gone, but "here's Jenny, with the baby, in the car..."

It's nice to hear a song with positives-in-spite-of-the-tests-of-time, and it's nice to hear the church mentioned in a positive light.

Hey, I remember that song!

I don't spend a whole lot of time listening to any secular radio; usually talk if I do, like Limbaugh and our regional WWL/New Orleans talk people.

But, a liking for it must be buried deep under my skin, because I keep finding pieces that resonate.

Growing up, we'd have the local country radio station playing from perhaps 5 a.m. until we caught the school bus, to help us keep track of time.  Twitty, Lynn, Cash, Wynette, even Ray Stevens from time to time.

Perhaps there was a time when one could retreat to country for cleaner music, but it's about like every other genre now... although most everything is a nursery rhyme next to uncensored rap :0 ...
