The Guiding Light fell between two college classes I had.  I'd go home to the married students' apartment we had, & there it would be.

10, 20 years later, if someone accidentally turns the TV to TGL I can catch up with things in a matter of minutes.

Hard to believe it started as the story of a preacher and his family (Methodist, I think...).  It's sure gone downhill...

I hated the very idea of the Bachelor & Ette, Joe Millionaire, etc., Survivor, all of them.  Have never seen as episode.

Ha!  Send 'em down here to the swamp and the housing project and the high school next door, the shrimp boat and the deer blind and the nutria trapping route, the 'cane field and the Mall and the Church of Christ!  That will be reality TV for me.

The only one with a scrap of redeeming value has been the one with the "has-been" celebrities.  "Surreal Life", is it?

marc

Only episode of Insomniac I've seen was when he was in Charleston, WV, and, believe it or not, it was one of the most accurate portrayals of WV I've ever seen on TV.  So for that alone, I won't call anyone a heathen for watching it.

The only ones that I know of that have stayed together (don't know about marriage, though) is the Bachelorette and her hunk.  She does have great inspiration to stay together.  Don't get me going again....   I'll have to calm down now!

I'm not quite cynical enough to ask how this differs from real life, but, single person that I am, the thought did occur to me.

Bon Voyage

Don't you all be knocking on pro-wrestling.  It isn't fake.  Its scripted.  Big difference.  Its live action theater.

I am sorry your son was shocked Shorty, I would have thought everybody and their brother would have already told him it was "fake."

I have been to an NBA game, an NFL game, NCAA Division 1 Football, and none of them compared to a live wrestling show, especially one shown on TNN on Mondays.

Where else can you boo the fan favorite and have people threaten to beat you up?  Where else can you make a whole crowd angry by yelling "Rocky sucks!, Rocky Sucks!"

Barb1957

... that I'm glad it was Zora!! Very romantic ending.

On another note, wasn't tonight MIRACLES night on NBC?
I finally saw it last week, I guess it was. Some of you, Lee included, had recommended the show here, and my hubby Al had seen it and liked it too. So last week I watched and was just blown away. And tonight I turn over to NBC at 9, after Joe M.'s over on FOX, and what's on? Michael Jackson! Again!!

OK, so guess I'll have to wait 'til next Mon. night for another Miracles episode.

Barb, maybe we should start a new thread called "Guilty TV Pleasures" where I can admit that I watched Joe Millionaire (parts of it) and was addicted to both seasons of The Bachelor (and now The Bachelorette) and was a Survivor devotee until it got boring this past year.

Best to just not even mention the college days when I watched Days of Our Lives.

There is another one out there called "My Life is a Sitcom."  Families compete to have a sitcom pilot made of their lives.  It is amazing to me what people find entertaining and what they will watch.

Barb1957

Wendy, Shorty, all ... hi!
I like Surreal, missed the last one though.
Not a Survivor fan, got bored with that one.
Have seen very little of The Bachelor and none of ..ette.

Another World was my fave soap. I even went to a couple of fan club luncheons, was fun meeting the actors.

Al and Brian like that show Insomniac. It is pretty funny but gets a bit raunchy at times too, like when drunken gals flash their breasts, what is with that? It's like that Rodney Carrington song. One show he was in Nashville. The Insomniac guy, not RC -- although he may have been in Nashville too, wouldn't surprise me!

I also admit to tuning in to The Osbournes on occasion.

A TV show has gotta be pretty vile for me to not want others to ever ever watch it, for fear I might be forced to be in the same room with their depraved, ruined minds...

Most of TV is pretty vile...

Ah, well, I have my guilty pleasures, too.  Just yesterday & bought & thoroughly enjoyed a period romance novel.  I had to skip a couple pages here & there, 'cause I won't read the "sex scenes", even if it's not quite sex.  Yet.

That's a guilty pleasure.  Other than enjoyment, and learning a bit about some 19th-century British social reformers, it was 100% for fun I read it.  (The story was about a young heiress who uses her fortune to revive a dying village & it's economy by bringing poor city folk out to it to run a factory where they'd manufacture newfangled healthy underwear to replace to stupid backboards and crippling corsets so popular then.  Yes, it was funny.)

The news I had been listening to went off while I was typing the post above... on came the soap opera with the flamboyant "woman of a certain age" fashion designer named Sally.  Can't recall which one that it... CBS< isn't it?

She's apparently recuperating after a heart attack.  She was dreaming of being lustily courted by Fabio, woke herself up with her own ecstatic moaning.  Made her friend run into the room all concerned she was having another heart attack!

    :D  :help:  :lookaround:  :sarcasim:    :p

Have any of these crazies, on these pick-a-spouse-from-among-the-contenders shows, really gotten married?  I haven't heard of it.

:alert: THIS IS AN OPINION AND ONLY AN OPINION  :alert:

The only "reality" show I have ever watched is American Idol - at least the people seem to have talent (well, not the first few episodes where they go to the different cities to pick the lucky ones that go on to Hollywood) and it's interesting to me to see them try their best to make their mark.  I admire their courage and their desire to succeed.

The rest of them, I cannot fathom the attraction to.  I just have a little concern about where all this is going.

On American Idol last night, they advertised the next great reality show - I think it's called "Married by America" - with the premise being the American viewing public puts people who have never met together for the purpose of being married.  I just think it is an assault on the sacred insitution of marriage, and a sad commentary on marriage in America.

When odd folks with all kinds of problems get together for a fictional show (you know, like comedy shows used to be) I can watch it with humor and laugh.  When real people bare their issues for someone else's viewing pleasure, I just can't understand it.

Though I will admit I don't know if Joe Millionaire was that type of show, I just try to avoid "reality shows" at all costs.

Ya mean that will be more humiliating than putting yourself out there like a piece of meat to be pawed over & selected in the first place?
...and after submitting to such a process agreeing to marry the sort of guy who would pick a wife that way?

That's the thing...it's like humiliation on top of humiliation!

janine

Lots of the wrestlers look real pretty... and they obviously have to be athletes, in good shape, most of them, to be able to do all those "fake" moves & not break each others' necks.

Marc, the difference is the cameras, man!  A million voyeurs sharing your pain!  That's the difference!

spurly

I did not watch one episode of this show.  The only reason I knew about were the bits I saw on Fox News.

Kevin

I'm with you, Barb and Wendy.  I thought Joe M. ended so romanticly.  I don't think Zora cared about the money and that was so refreshing.  I love my escapist TV shows (bachelor, survivor, etc)!   I agree...survivor got boring.
I'm glad I'm not the only one with such addictions!
I haven't seen Miracle yet but will try to catch that one.
Shorty

I think this post is related enough to the thread (although I'm bad about stretching the topic).   I just have to ask if anyone watched the Bacherlorette finale?
That man that she picked was so extraordinarily cute!  Especially with his shirt off.
I'm sorry...weak moment there...I will try to contain myself now!

Yes. Yes. It was great. I was shocked - I had been sure she would pick Charlie. But I liked Ryan much better. I think they have a better chance of staying together than any other "met on a reality tv show" couple I've seen.

However, have you all seen the ads for tonights show where they bring back Aaron (the Bachelor from the most recent season) and his chosen, Helene, and have them bare all their problems in a tv interview? It actually shows him saying to her "I really just don't love you anymore" and her breaking down at hearing him say that. That poor girl. I just hate that they are putting that out there for everyone to watch. It doesn't get much more humiliating that having your fiance/boyfriend/significant other say "I don't love you anymore" on national TV.

Does professional wrestling count as a "reality show"?

Wrestling probably has about the same level of reality.  My son was a "wrestling" fan a few years ago.  A show came on explaining how some of the moves were faked..and he was so disappointed...said he didn't want to know..please turn the channel!
The show last night with Helene crying (Bachelor) was really bad.  I like these shows only when everyone lives happily everafter.  Like my son, I guess I don't want true reality!
