Hi all. My name is Tom, iam 23 years old and in a bit of a sticky situation.

Iam not christan but have been in a relationship with a christian girl now for 9 months and iam very much in love with her and happy being with her but we have recently gone on a break to try and find out what we both want. The main reason behind this is because of church and her belives. I have never from day one had an issue with her being christian or her belives.

She told me that she would like me to start going to church with her and iam not 100% sure that i want to go to church. She told me that she would like me to be apart of her relationship with god. I personaly dont know how that is possible. I have told her that iam willing to try and learn more about what she means and have open minded disscusions with her about it but she would still like me to go and sit in church with her, i didnt have to do anything just sit there and support her. Now i didnt see that as a good compromise and any point to it as i will have been made to go instead of going myself.

Iam open minded about going to church but when iam ready not to be made to go. Our relationship apart from this sticky situation is great we get on well and enjoy each others company. I love her and want this relationship but at the moment not getting anywhere.

Any advise will be greatfully recevied and helpful.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Hi Tom
Well this is a hard one for her as the Bible does tell us not to unequally yoked with unbelievers. Therefore Christians aren't actually to marry non believers and many like me wouldn't go out with a non believer just to stop the situation that you are in from happening.
Our faith is so important for us that to be with a person who doesn't share that is not possible. Some Christians do marry non believers but many of them live to regret it. I have three christian female friends married to non Christian's and they all have difficulties because of it.
I think she is being very sensible, and it may be that your relationship will have to end due to your lack of interest. I am not blaming you, and as you say, no one should ever be forced to go to church, but to her it may be that she has to choose between doing what God tells us(which is for our own good) or going out with you against this.

choochoo1301

Thank you for your reply.
I understand that your faith is so important to you and I am becoming more open minded listening to what she has to say. At the moment iam feeling pressured to go and that as a result came to us going on a break.

Thanks again all advise and help is greatfully recevied

son of God

If that girl is born of God, and you say she is, you are messing with God.  Do you think that you are stronger that He is?  Or that you can persuade Him to not avenge His children?  Or do you think that you can play with fire and not get burned?

I'm not being nasty, friend.  I am stating it as it is.  You are pursuing something that aught not be.  You are insisting on it, but yet you see that to be "forced" or coerced into something is not right.  I have seen many marriages where the guy became a Christian for the woman that he married.  I have yet to see one of those where the man is really a man, instead of a beaten, cowering spiritual dog.

Back off until you are born of God.  And if that doesn't happen, don't mess with God like you are currently doing.  For your own sake, man, don't play games with God or His daughters.  He will not sit idly by while a man messes with one of His daughters.  And if the daughter is foolish enough to insist on doing something so wrong and dangerous as this one is doing, beware the consequences of doing that to her!

Sorry, friend, but I cannot encourage you.  I would be a fool to do so.

Sometimes a man-to-man must happen from an older guy to a younger.

You have enough common sense to see the pitfalls, and to know that there are already problems with it.  You have already acknowledged this to be true.  Now be wise, friend.  Be wise.  And you will surely live long and prosper.

I hope that you so!  You are already a cut above many.  Don't ruin yourself.  Seek the Lord with all your heart.  ALL OF IT: NOT WITH HALF OF IT STILL ATTACHED TO HER.  And see what happens in your life!  Acknowledge you wickedness to God.  Repent.  Turn to Him, and be born of Him, and receive forgiveness of all sin, and He will lead you in all righteousness and joy in Him.  And He will bless you for His own Name's sake -- you will merely be the one who is blessed by Him in so, so many ways.

Wishing the best for you, young man.

Well, I have no experience myself in this matter and I am not legally qualified to give advice to you but I do agree with everybody else that has replied to you and I say that just consider this. Get right with God before you go any further with this girl. God is far, far more important than any girl will ever be. I know a couple of friends of my mum that were in the same situation as you in the sense that she is a devout christian and you are not, and this guy when he was a teenager had God speak to him and tell him that he had to get himself right with Him before even considering going out with this girl. Now they have been married for over 20 years and they have 4 beautiful well behaved christian kids and a steady rock solid relationship. They always go to the Lord to consult on his opinion on anything before they even consider talking/discussing anything with themselves. For example, if one of them hascome into some dept problems, they will tell the other half about it but then tell God and ask him what to do before discussing it with the other half. Just consider this, your relationship with this girl will either go nowhere or will come into some problems along the way for the rest of your life if you are both not singing from the same hymn sheet, (if you know what I mean). Good luck anyways and if she dumps you then it's only for the best for you and then you can focus on God and your own life. All the best. God bless. xx

To your own self be true (and her.) If you lie to her you'll both suffer. As you will if you go to church just to make her happy. She was wrong to date you in the first place considering her beliefs.

My advice is go to church yourself, apart from her. If you decide to pursue it for it's own sake, tell her that. That way you're doing the right thing by both of you. If however you decide it's not for you, be honest about it and stick to your guns.

This is a dangerous thing to be dishonest about. She has done the wrong thing by you, to do the wrong thing by her will make it even worse.

Am sorry to hear you're in this situation. Will add a prayer for you both and the situation.

God bless.

PS. PM me if you ever want other prayer or wish to discuss anything about it or anything I've said.

If she is ready to accept Jesus as her saviour then why doesnt she do it now? She doesnt have to be baptised yet, but the sooner she does that the better for her own salvation.
Also assuming that she is a similar age to you then why hasnt she told her parents about you?Is she living with them? Dont they even knmow that she has a boyfriend? That seems strange as after all she is well into adult hood and she is allowed to live her own life unless they are rather controlling or something.
fristly she needs to become a Christian,(as long as she isnt just doing it becuase of you as it wont last if she is) and secondly, she needs to tell her parents.
Also while it is best to have parents approval, as your ages it shouldnt be everything. You are both adults and with Gods help you are both old enough to make your own decisions.
My MIL tried to break all of her sons marriages up, so sometimes we cant listen to parents, as they have selfish motives although of course it is best to have their blessing.

ronythomas

as she is an RC she wants some more time to convince her parents....she is very much scared of her parents of telling about this relationship....i never went for a date with her & never created a bad image of hers.....
yeah she is living with them...we just use to talk in the weekends.....we wont marry until & unless our parents allow us to do so..as u know that its difficult to present these kinds of problems in front of parents...she wants some more time....
my parents knows this....the only demand from my parents side is that the girl should be a born again beleiver....
please do help me to know the god's will....i was searching for this answer for a long time...but i ddnt get it till now.....

How old is she?
is she now a born again believer?
How long have you known her and how do you know she is the one if you hardly ever see her or spend time with her?Hoe many times have you been out with her?

I think it is odd that she is asking for more time. What is going to change in a few months time? if she hasnt told her parents that she has met the man she wants to marry then something is very wrong somewhere. That is a big red flag to me and a sign that she is too controlled by her parents.

Also your parents cannot 'demand' anything. I have three adult children  aged 24, 29 AND 31. It isnt my place to demand that they do anything. it is their choice who they marry and I just pray for them to meet the right one.

I think that both sets of parents are forgetting that you are adults now and have your own lives to lead.

yeah, as above. If she loves you then she should be happy to stand up for you in front of her parents, either that or be prepared to elope.

You have to live with the person you choose, your parents don't. Advice can be a very helpful thing, but overly controlling parents can also ruin their childrens lives. This is your potential future wife. And you her husband. If you're not hearing from God yourself over the matter then maybe it's time to cut out the white noise.

God does answer when we honestly, honourably seek him. And his opinion is the most important of all.

ronythomas

she is 20 now and i'm 23...she dont use to go to church because she is staying with her parents and parents dont know about this...what she knows about our faith is only through me....so right now she is not a born again believer..... i know her for the last one year....i never been out with her cos she is scared of her parents....
actually till now i havent got any job...so my plan is when i get the job i'l approach her parents for the marriage....till that day she can't go to our church or tell everything to her parents....the time i get the job she will tell everything to her parents....
i know we are adult and we can take our own decisions but the problem is that what i'm doing now(continuing the relationship with her) is against the god's will or not....please do pray for me.....

chosenone

If she isnt a christian then yes it is aganst Gods will. If she wants to give her life to Jesus there is absolutely nothing to stop her.She doesnt even have to tell her parents one thing about that (although why would they not want her to be a Christian?)

If she is too scared of her parents to even tell them that you and she are wanting to go out( let alone to  marry), then I wouldn't go ahead with this relationship. If she cant stand up to them at 20 you are in for a very unhappy marriage with her parents controlling everything.
I know what it is like to have a controlling MIL and believe me, it is horrible. I praise God that she lives the other side of the world.
/
She really needs to leave home and live her own life if her parents are that bad.Their interference will go on and on until she stands up to them. I think there is something very wrong for her to be this way with them.

If you have never been out with her the how can you have got to know her at all? When do you see her? When do you get to spend time together one on one? To get to know what she is really like?.  I think you are jumping the gun.

Sounds to me as if you need to both speak to her parents, ask for permission to date her (not marry her) and THEN go out together, get to know each other properly, and after some time if it works out ask if you can marry. If they say no then she may have to marry her agsainst their wishes

I think you are jumping the gun. if they wont even agree to her going out with you how do you expect them to get over the shock of this strange young man who they never even knew existed, asking to marry their daughter?. They need to get to know you, see you together, ask questions etc etc.
IF you think after prayer that it is DEFINATELY Gods will that you go out with her (and unless she is a christian then I would advise against it) then the next step is that she needs to tell her parents. Dont even think of marriage at this point, one step at a time.

I know that she says that she needs more time but it probably wont happen, If she cant tell them now then she probably never will.Nothing is going to change to make her do it on 3 months time is it? She may well need to leave them in order to live her own life.

Well, I'm going to catch it for what I'm about to say but, what the heck.

Rony,

I am married to a Catholic, my first wife (deceased) was Catholic and when I was young I dated many Catholic girls.  My best friend is Catholic.  They all are saved.  They all believe that Jesus is their Saviour.  It is good for both of you to be of one denomination because it makes things easier if you are not able to love each other when your denominations are different, but if that is the case I don't see that your prospects for a lasting marriage is good because marriage takes a lot of understanding and compromise.

I was married for 37 years the first time and now 3 years.  My wives and I have compromised on lots of things.  The gospel of Christ is the only thing we won't compromise on but since we both love Jesus, it's not a problem.

I admire the fact that you are keeping yourselves chaste, that is a wonderful but unusual thing in these days.  I also admire that you want your parents blessings before you wed but just remember, you are both leaving your parents approval behind you.  Your fiance/wife is the most important person (other than Jesus) in your life now.  If your parents won't give their blessings I don't believe you should fail to get married if you both love each other.

My granma gave me some wonderful advice before I got married:  Always treat yoour wife with respect, if you lose respect your marriage will quite possibly be over;  Always remember the girl you fell in love with.  People change over the years, if that change isn't quite what you like, just remember what she was like when you fell in love, that same girl is still there inside her.  Finally, never, never, never, ever go to bed mad.  "I'm sorry" is the easiest thing in the world to say (even if you aren't...women can make you awful mad sometimes) and making up from an argument is wonderful.  I used to start arguments just so we could make up.

God bless you and your girl and I wish you a long and happy marriage with lots of kids (I had five).   ::smile::

The point is Stucky is that this girl has been baptised as a Catholic but clearly isnt a christian. Baptism as a baby doesnt make you a Christian. The other point is that she is too scared  even to tell her parents that she is interested in this boy presumably just becuase he isnt Catholic.Big red flags there.

(Personally I could marry a man from any denomination excepy catholic but that is becuase I see far to many very important doctrinal errors in their beliefs. Thats just me and the conclusions that I have come to.)

Ahh Judy my love,

That's fine for you but please don't try to tell me my late wife, her parents and my best friend are all in hell right now because I know different.  If I didn't know they were saved, along with my five children, I would have done everything in my power to save them.  You are going to be very happily surprised when you see all the Bible believing and Jesus loving Catholics in Heaven.  Stop by me and my family's spot at the Lamb's supper table and I'll give yopu a hug.

I agree with you about the big red flags but that's because if you truly love a Christian of ANY denomination and don't have the commitment to stand by that person then you don't have the love it takes to make a marriage work.  Go back and read the Bible in Genesis where God tells about the commitment a person makes to their spouse and not to their parents.

Stucky I am not saying that Catholics arent Christians at all, I am saying that the young man has said that his girlfreind isnt a christian.
We can be baptised and bought up as Catholics, Anglicans, or whatever but that doesnt make us Christians. She needs to make her own life saving decision to folllow Christ and it seems that she hasnt done that yet.

I was bought up and baptised and confirmed in the Anglican denomation, but it wasnt until I made my own decision at 15 to follow Christ (in a baptist church strangely enough)  that I became a Christian. That alone saved me regardless of whether I were bought up or baptised in a  particular denomination.

This girl needs to give her life to Jesus and unitl she does so, she isnt saved. Going to church as a child and being baptised doesnt save you.

No, but believing in Jesus as your Lord and Saviour does and every single Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist, Presbyterian, Anglican, Pentacostal, Jehovah's Witness, Seventh Day Adventist and Mormon that I have talked to and asked that question have all answered yes.  That's good enough for me and I think for Jesus too.

If you were Anglican and didn't believe in Jesus then you weren't even a good Anglican, much less Christian.  Rony never said his girlfriend isn't Christian, he said she is Catholic and you saw that as meaning she is not Christian.

You can be baptised and brought up Baptist and not be a Christian too, as with any denomination.  From reading what Rony says it appears to me that he is under the same misaprehension as you and many other Christians are and that is that if you don't say the right words you aren't saved.  Salvation is a matter of the heart and it is very simple, "Do you believe Jesus is your Lord and Saviour?"  If you answer "yes" and believe it in your heart, you are saved.  End of story.  Fini.

I worry about their relationship because they are putting their parents before their love and because they are allowing things heard from misguided Christians to effect their love for Jesus and for each other.  If they both believe in Jesus and if she wants to get baptised that's fine.  If they want to both get their parents blessing that's fine.  Neither is NECESSARY for salvation or is a reason not to marry.

He said that she was baptised into the Catholic faith. That means nothing. Anyone can be baptised (and most babies are) and most of them aren't Christians as adults now.Its a tradition.Or are you suggesting that baptism as babies makes us Christians?
As for me, I was a little child, so it wasn't a case of being a 'good' Anglican or 'good' Christian. As soon as I could (age 11) I stopped going to church. People are baptised at their parents request and not their own, they are babies.

This young man clearly said that she wanted to be born again, therefore she isn't born again now.She WANTS to be born again he said. Millions of people are born into the Roman Catholic faith and millions of them have and never will be Christians , just as millions are born into Muslim families and don't follow that religion.
Two of my chidlren were baptised as babies (I didnt know any better then)but it wasnt until 2 years ago that they both made their own committment to him (in their 20's) that they were truly saved, even though their parents (me and their step dad)are Christians. They were then baptised by full immersion which was amazing and wonderful.

The list you mentioned is also questionable. JWs are a cult, have you even looked into what they believe? I have. They don't even believe in the bodily Resurrection of Jesus. They think that we are all going to hell unless we are JW's.They are a cult.

Many many people grow up into families who say that are this or that, but we ALL need to make own own person commitment to Jesus to be saved.

I have known loads of people who will say they are Catholic but never bother with their faith or go to church or even give God the time of day, to say that alone means nothing at all. We can all claim whatever we like but being born to parents who call themselves catholics means absolutely nothing to whether the children are saved or not

The Bible clearly say not be unequally yoked and unless this young lady has given her life to Jesus then she isn't saved (yet). Anyone can believe in Jesus. Satan believes in Jesus. Muslims believe in Jesus. They are not saved however.

Okay Judy, we're going to get down and dirty now in a real fight.   ::smile::

What if he said she was baptised into the Baptist "faith"?  That means nothing either.  I'm saying that baptism has nothing to do with salvation.

You said you were Anglican and came to Christ at 15, which presupposes that you weren't a Christian before that time and Anglican had nothing to do with it.  Also, you can be a "good" anything and not be Christian.  Good has nothing to do with it.

You are confusing baptism with salvation.  Plus, NOW you are saying baptism by immersion.  Are you precluding anyone that was baptised by not by immersion?  Wow, you just make it harder and harder to get saved.
Millions and millions of Baptists, etc. have been born into their particular churches too and are not saved.

I'm not going to argue with you about this anymore Judy.  You are arguing with me over nothing important and I'm tired of nonsense.  The bottom line is if they can't commit to each other and agree upon their christianity then they shouldn't get married.  Throwing in all these over used "Christian" words isn't going to change anything.  I don't offer much hope to anyone that puts their parents before their commitment to each other and I wouldn't worry so much about saying the correct "Christian words as about what is in their hearts.  If they both believe in Jesus and all that entails then they are both saved, no matter what denomination either of them is.

Get it right, being Catholic, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, Pentacostal, SDA, JW, Mormon or what ever neither assures you or denies you being saved, only faith in Jesus is required for that.

baptism isnt something that bothers me personally. I have many friends who are and many who arent. I believe personally in full immersion baptism in obedience to Jesus but I dont believe that it is necessary to have had to be baptised to be saved.See the thief on the cross.
I dont agree with childrens baptism no, they arent in a position to make any decision for Jesus themsleves. I used to think this was right but now I dont as the Bible dees not speak of babies being baptised at all.

I also dont believe that people who belong to cults are saved. Do you think that someone who doesnt believe that Jesus rose from the dead is saved?

Where does the Bible say that a baby who has been baptised is saved?.babies are baptised becuase their parents want that and not for the baby.

We need to believe ourselves and make that decision oursleves or we will not be saved.    This girl is from an apparently Catholic family. That does NOT make her a christian any more than me standing in a garage makes me a car. Even if her parents are Christian (and we dont know that))the children still have to make their own decisions to follow Jesus for themselves when they are old enough (which she is)
and she needs to do that asap for her own salvation.

Judy,

You keep talking like I said something about infant baptism when not a word was uttered about that.  Children under the age of ...the word escapes me now...are covered as far as salvation is concerned.

As for cults, that is a man-made word and has nothing to do with salvation.  Salvation is a matter of the heart and for God to judge not us.

I believe that faith in Jesus consists of a number of things, one being belief that Jesus rose from the dead.  Again, as I said, I am no one judge, that is Jesus purvue.

Get off the baby baptism Judy, I never said a word about it.  Where did I say being a Catholic makes one a believer?  Why do you put all these words in my mouth when I never uttered them.  At least read my replies before you accuse me of saying things that I did not say.  Her salvation is her own business and not ours.  You are assuming she is not saved.  Jesus said that faith the size of a mustard seed (that is as big as a grain of sand) is enough to move a mountain.  Don't you think that most Christians must have enough faith to be saved?  Have you tried to move a mountain lately?
So many people on here want to make salvation  a difficult thing but it isn't.  That's why it is called the Good News.  God would have no one lost if that were possible, but it isn't.  There will always be people who refuse to believe, even though God made it easy to do.  Don't be like these others on here who seem to want to damn everyone or make them jump through hoops to be saved.

By the way, if you are a car you're an old but pretty car.   ::smile::
