How do I deal with my non-believer boyfriend?

Beautiful Faith

My boyfriend comes from a Jewish lineage.  His father is atheist and his mother (passed on when he was 11) was Lutheran.  He didn't grow up with the Christian faith, apart from going to a Catholic school during his grade school years, so I understand that he doesn't fully understand my relationship with Christ or why going to church/praising the Lord is so important to me.

The thing is, this last weekend we were at my parent's house for a family event.  Saturday night I invited him to go to church with me, and he said he would think about it.  I was truly surprised when I stirred him at 8 o'clock on Sunday morning and he actually got up and got ready to go with me!  I was praising the Lord in my heart the whole time I got ready and for the twenty minute drive to the church I like to attend with my brother and sister-in-law.

When we got to the church we still had about five minutes before we were going to meet my siblings, so I was touching up my hair and makeup in the car.  When I noticed that he was shifting about and looked kind of surly I asked him if anything was wrong.  He looked out the window around us as car after car of worshipers made their way to the doors and told me he just felt agitated and on edge.  When I pushed further he spat something about all these people being "preachers of bull****"!  I was so stunned and hurt that he could say something so venomous about my brothers and sisters in Christ--wonderful people that he doesn't even know!--that I merely got out of the car and walked into the church ahead of him.

This and a few others things have been heavy on my heart, and I think I'm going to sit down with him to night and try to talk things out--at least explain that that comment was completely unwarranted and very hurtful to me.  What I need to know is, if you were in my situation, how would you handle it/what would you say to him?

Even if you can't think of any advice for me I would really appreciate your prayers as I try to work through this.  I really love my boyfriend, we've been together for almost a year and he's a great person.  I'm trying to help him know Christ's power and love the way I do, but I know that that's something he has to work out between he and God as well.  I'm foolish for hoping I can change him, but I can't stop hoping.

Please help or pray, and thank you very much!

Your sister in Christ,
Natalie

2Co 6:14-18  Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

You asked what to say to him. Jesus says,

"'But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.'" (Mark 13:11)

So, I can see that Jesus might not want you to be preplanning what to say to him. You need to be with God, so you can do and say what He guides in His peace.

Grin and Bear It says get out while you can. Well, I know there are people who have gotten their romantic companions converted to Jesus, before they got married. I also have heard of how ones can get someone saved, then marry them, but then break up. People can get someone to put on the show everyone is judging by, but this does not work. Also, I'm thinking, the one who leads a sinner to Christ would be more experienced and mature than the new baby Christian; so why marry someone so new to things? And if the experienced Christian is a woman, possibly she will be essentially babysitting the newborn guy she marries.

Instead, I think you need the challenge of learning how to relate with Christian men and women who are mature and in the word, so you can learn how to love with these people, and be getting the correction this will require, instead of being with someone with no Christian standards to challenge you with.

How do you deal with him?  Dump him.  You shouldn't even be with him.

You seem surpirsed by his behavior, and concerned about it revealing a bad heart with God.

He doesn't profess to be born of God, so what do you expect?

You, on the other hand, profess this, yet are hooked up with one who hates God.

Who's got the bigger problem?

At least he acknowledges his.

But you think that you're fine.

You know neither Christ's love nor His power, or you'd not be living like this, in direct disobedience to His Word.  No small wonder that your boyfriend hasn't listened to you.  This isn't rocket science.  Apparently he just wants your body and your relationship.  I can't blame him for not wanting your religion, as it obviously doesn't help you, and you obviously don't obey it's clear statements in the bible.  You don't believe it either, so what's the problem with him not believing it either?  At least he's honest about it, not trying to put on a show called hypocrisy.

oops..... there's mud on your face.

Repent.

His reaction is one of natural man, that is, a man that is not saved.  His spirit is pushing against the Holy Spirit.  It's normal.  Give him time and pray for him.  Don't be hurt by it.  His problem is with God, not you, and God will deal with it.  He'll come around, give him time.

1 Cor 7:13-14
13   And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him.
14   For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.
(KJV)

Eph 2:11-13
11   Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
12   That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
13   But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
(KJV)

Sadly for you, you need to seperate from him and pray for him at a distance. God does warn us not to get together with unbelievers and that is good and wise advice.
You shoudnt be going out with a man who isnt a believer.
