The more I walk in the flesh, the bigger my waistline gets.  I use more profanity.  I walk around with a prideful look.  I brag about what I've done or what I can do.

What are some examples of outward signs of when you walk in the flesh or someone else does?

A quick examination of myself is to find that I'm no longer spending as much time with my brethren. It is very easy to get sucked into minding the things of the flesh again, and the product of that can be death to a Christian walk. We must be ever diligent to follow the Holy Spirit's leading to avert such devastation in our lives. To me, Christian fellowship has always been of great support in avoiding slipping back into our old nature that comes so easily. Now Jesus would eat with the world, but His was a mission to present them with eternal life; not to become a drunk.

Romans 8:4  That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Romans 8:5  For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

Romans 8:12  Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.

What are some of those things of the flesh? Galatians 5:19-21 "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20  Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21  Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like:"

Romans 7:25  I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Romans 8:8  So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

Romans 8:9  But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

For me outward signs are pride, jealousy, coveting to name a few.  Our sinful nature is always looking to be soothed by other people telling us how good we are, when truly the most important thing to do is serve others as unto God Himself.  Pride is such a hard thing to break and without the Holy Spirit, I venture to say it is impossible to get over pride.  Our self-centeredness is the basis of this pride.  Our natures without the Holy Spirit are made of dirty rags.  We truly are an abomination, especially as we learn to know the righteous, holy God.  I thank God for our Savior, for without Him, we truly are dead both physically and spiritually.  Thank you Jesus for letting your Holy Spirit indwell inside us so you can cover our sinful flesh with your righteous blood.

I often wonder whether I believe what scripture says concerning this.

I know non believers who are much better people than christian people. Some might say the christian is operating in their flesh therefore a bad christian. But what about the non believer who is a kind soul and does more good things than a faithfull christian.

I also notice prophets etc attacking the worldy methods, e.g Without Christ you will find things impossible.

yet I find that those without Christ who rely on the flesh are far stronger and better people than christians. I think christian methods for success in this world are not worth bothering with. Worldly methods of success such as setting goals etc are far better than reliying on Christ who most of the time does not do anything at all.
If one wants to succeed in the world forget about Christ, He is more concerned about saving the lost, he does not care much about our jobs or lifestyle. Seeking the kingdom first does not add other thing unto the as christ says. Many kingdom seeking Christians die of starvation. Better to rely on survival methods and success coaches to help one live a better life. Christ cannot help you live a better life, but will probably make it much worse, the only promise he gives is a better world to come, which at Christ pace could be a million years from now. So learn to enjoy your life through self improvement because Christ method are the way of pain, poverty and suffering. If one wants to succeed in the world forget christian methods as these are outdated and frustrating. The gospel is mostly about suffering for christ and not how to life a proper life. The gospel cannnot teach e.g proper diets or excercise regimes, orginization skills, life skills etc without these skills being a christian is kind of pointless.
But the gospel attacks wordly methods, because it wants you to fail in life and keep you down.

Thank you for being truly honest about your feelings. I have felt very dispearing myself. However, in my life God has set everything right (or is in the process:). He has put the puzzle pieces together. He has shown me how to have patience when my 1st or human reaction would be to hurt back. He has shown me how to love when I never learned it growing up or when experiencing the world's kind of love was just a love that just wanted to use me.

The bible says that the way is narrow and there will be few who will go down that way (my paraphrase). The truth and the kind of love that God has and the kind of love that Jesus showed people everyday is the extraordinary kind of love that not many will want to walk in...as it calls for a renewed mind....a mindset of servanthood and of self-sacrifice as a life-style. Yet, those that do decide to walk that way, will experience a joy like no other.

Unfortunately many Christians are still stuck in the way that humans are used to...and many will not understand that there is a higher calling.

"Do all things without complaining and disputing," (Philippians 2:14) So, arguing and complaining can help to maintain us in the flesh.
