Loved this movie!

Like most Tim Burton films, the humor is a little dark, and the characters take themselves too seriously in amusing ways, but the movie is clean enough to take the kids to.  That said, there are many references within the movie to the classic horror movies of yesteryear which little ones will not get.  Look for an animated Vincent Price playing the science teacher.  Oh, and death is clearly a theme here, so you'll have to explain that if you take very small children.

If you liked Edward Scissorhands or The Corpse Bride, this movie is very much in the same vein.
