In the UK the 'c' word doesn't mean poop.
It doesn't here either.  I have no idea why you said this.

It is no sin to be crass.  However, if what you are saying is offensive to ANYONE listening, partner or anyone else, then it is wrong.

I find myself agreeing with all of your posts that I have read so far. I just came on here yesterday.

.....because we have different words that mean different things.

Yes I agree, and that includes whether we think God would want us to be saying certain words as well.
If I says a swear word when I bang my toe, no one may be there to hear, but I still say sorry to God anyway.

Actually it probably is.  "Sin" in both Hebrew and Greek are archery terms meaning to miss the target.  Paul writes that all sin and fall short of the Glory of God. You aim at the target of His will and glory but the arrow falls short of the target.  That is sin.

In what way is being crass hitting the target of God's glory? And if it falls short ......

QuoteHowever, if what you are saying is offensive to ANYONE listening, partner or anyone else, then it is wrong.

That depends on what you mean by "offensive." Our Lord was very offensive in what He said to the religious leaders of His day.   I understand that my words in this thread may be offensive to many people who have never been taught to look at things from a theological viewpoint; and instead just go with what they feel is right and wrong.

Dave our spiritual convictions and conscience are very important in directing how we behave, dont you think? Its not all about theology. Arent there words that you wont use in your own life? That you feel convicted are rude and unacceptable?
I believe that The Holy spirit will convict us of things that may not be specifically spoken of in the Bible. So if the Bible says don't let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouth, it wont say specific words or phrases(which obviously change over the years depending on language and culture anyway) but The Holy spirit does make us aware of what is right or wrong don't you think? Also as we grow spiritually it seems that we are more convicted of thingws in life  that we may have found acceptable a few years before.

Of course.  But my convictions cannot be applied to anyone but myself.

QuoteIts not all about theology. Aren't there words that you won't use in your own life? That you feel convicted are rude and unacceptable?

Of course.  But again, I cannot place that on anyone else - and THAT is where the theology comes in.

QuoteI believe that The Holy spirit will convict us of things that may not be specifically spoken of in the Bible.

Of course He does.  But that does NOT mean He is convicting the next person of the same.  We need to be very cognizant of that fact.

QuoteSo if the Bible says don't let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouth, it wont say specific words or phrases(which obviously change over the years depending on language and culture anyway) but The Holy spirit does make us aware of what is right or wrong don't you think?

Again, I agree.  But if someone asks me is xyz OK, and they do not have that same conviction< I will have to argue in favor of freedom in the Lord for them; even if I find it abhorant.  Unless I can find specific chapter and verse, I will not condemn something.

I grew up in  a culture (Wesleyan Holiness) that had all kinds of things listed as sins that were never mentioned in the bible.

Smelling alcohol = the sin of drunkenness.
Dancing was a sin (lust)
owning a deck of cards or a pair of dice was a sin (gambling)
listening to secular music, going to movies or watching television was a sin (idolatry)

Clearly there is no biblical basis for any of that. But because someone somewhere way back when was convicted of something; they felt it necessary to place that restriction on everyone else.

QuoteAlso as we grow spiritually it seems that we are more convicted of things in life  that we may have found acceptable a few years before.

Again I agree with this.  But because God convicts us of something, that does not make it a sin for everyone or anyone else.

I hope this makes sense.

I think you added something to the meaning of the word, when you extended the archery metaphor and gave it a target.  "Miss the mark" carries the idea of an unintentional mistake.  No less.  No more.

To get back to the discussion... using cuss words in this context isn't unintentional.  So maybe what we should be talking about is "transgression" - the intentional violation of the Law or the spirit of the Law.

I'm pretty sure you can't find a Biblical Law that is broken, so it comes down to whether or not it can be demonstrated that it violates the spirit of the Law.

So why is that OK I wonder? For example take the 'F' word. I hate that word, and I hate hearing so many young people use it so casually, and how it is so frequently used in films and tv programmes. IF that is the sort of language that the OP was referring to, then I cant see how that is ok myself referring to the verse that Red quoted.  ::shrug::

As I understand it, that is exactly what the OP would have been talking about.

Apparently some people find that language very arousing. (not me for sure!)

While I may find it problematic, does using that language in the privacy of your own bedroom really meet the standard of what Paul meant when he wrote Ephesians 4:29? It is too easy to cherry pick a verse and define some word in it in a way that makes us very comfortable. But scripture is not designed to make us comfortable.  It is to goad us to seek HIM and His righteousness.

So if we define "unwholesome" as to preclude using the F bomb in private, that makes us comfortable.  But if that is not really what the author intended then we end up possibly putting a burden on someone that is not of God.

And that is my concern with discussions like this.

I cannot imagine any born again believer in Jesus using words like the f word or the c word (in or out of the bedroom) and not feeling convicted afterward. The Lord is in that room, where the two are gathered in His name. Let our mouths and our hearts be pure and undefiled by worldly thought, word and deed!

Of course there are people who find these words arousing! They are words attached to sick and sinful acts/images in our day. For instance, in a movie a guy might say something to his buddies using this language when they want to dishonor a woman they just saw at the bar. These words are damaging and definitely do not impart grace to the hearer. The flesh is greatly aroused by what is wicked. Both people may feel it's ok at the time, but it will do it's damage in the mind. I won't go into detail.

I say dangerous territory... there's no place in a Christian's life for this kind of worldly perversion.
