Then state why you think you'll go to that destination.

John 3:16 is my reason for voting Heaven.

John 14 v 2-3
heaven.
In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. "If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also."

Then state why you think you'll go to that destination.

I'm going there because I know he loves me and His grace is beyond our understanding. I am one with Christ as he is one with me,. His spirit dwells in me.

Paul is my inspiration. He spoke his confidence in 2nd Timothy 4:6 I want this for my testimony.

6 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
  2 Ti 4:6-8

A glorious song comes to mind.
O when the saints go marching in. O how want to be in that number, when the saints go marching in

That's a provoking question to be posted here at the Catholic forum, but hey, why not I'll bite. It's Heaven in the end, but the Scriptures also talk about what could also could happen - a purging process for those not in a "state of grace" at the time of death..

In 1 Cor 3 11-15 it says: "For no other foundation can any one lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any one builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble—each man's work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire".

Now, if you are not of the Catholic faith tradition you will reject the Church's interpretation of that Scripture with that concept and will rely instead on some succeeding faulty interpretation of the Holy Writ by some other Christian sect or your own faulty interpretative abilities. But that's okay, it's a free world and you can believe anything you want.

Other than how and why we will be judged, what specifically do these verses say that we may misinterpret them?

LexKnight

I'd hope paradise, but that's to be determined.

I gave my answer and the Church's teaching on the matter. As for misinterpreting them, that's for you to figure out. I'll go with the Latin Rite's teaching on it.  But look, the whole post was a loaded one anyway. Why here and not in the "Theology" forum?

And as for heaven, who are any of us to presume anything about heaven and getting there?  God is God, He can do anything He wants and I think that just on general principles he can deny us entry - despite Jesus interceding for us.  And that is my humble opinion.

I don't look at the section of the thread, I usually find topics from "Show Unread Posts Since Your Last Visit", so I had no idea this was in the Catholic section, but thanks for avoiding answering my question anyway.

As for your previous question I apologize for being somewhat flippant. I honestly don't know how people misinterpret them, or any other Scripture verse. Certain interpretations existed for hundreds and hundreds of years and then suddenly new ones come up that are totally at odds with the heretofore accepted ones.

Does one put their trust in what some new Christian sect has come up with or stick with the accepted church authority that has been around since the beginning of the Christian faith? Both are using the Scriptures but come up with different outcomes.

I guess that's the difference between orthodox and other faith traditions. We are taught to rely on the inerrancy of the Church's interpretation while others go their own way. A choice has to be made and that's it as far as I can see.

So how come the RC church has the most errors of any denomination I know?

The churches I go to stick with what the Bible says, and not what mere man has decided.

As long as you are doing what is right in the eyes of the Lord then it matters little what others do, think, or how they interpret the scriptures. The Kingdom of Heaven awaits those who seek the fullness of God  ::smile::

::headscratch:: Umm... no, no He can't.  Because that would make Him a liar.  His word says, if you believe and profess Jesus as Lord you shall be saved, and the saved are guaranteed Heaven, according to His word.

If He takes that back after promising that to us, then He lies....  and that isn't going to happen.

1Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ to further the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness— 2in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time, 3and which now at his appointed season he has brought to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior. Titus 1:1-2

And Jesus said in Matthew 7: 21-23 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.'

Didn't these people Jesus was talking about accept him as the Christ? I mean they were actually casting out demons in his name, so there must've been some deep conscious acceptance of him as the Savior.

I have always understood that as Jesus talking about charlatans, false prophets or people who uses His name for their own selfish motives... And doesn't really believe in Him.

People can "say" a lot of things but I think it comes down to their deepest feelings and sincerity for our Lord.. Imo

and what a wonderful promise He gives us.  Those verses in 1 Cor 3  say that He IS the foundation.  Then it mentions what we have built UPON it and if THAT will withstand the test.  Then it mentions  works  and rewards.   What His word says on works and rewards is in addition to our salvation.  It starts out with He IS the foundation -  that gives us eternal life.  Any rewards given for our works are in addition to our salvation.  If we aren't with Him, what good would any rewards even be to us?

kensington

I agree... that verse you quoted Ladonia...  specifically said...  "They practice lawlessness".   Those who are saved, and hold to the hope of the promise He gave us, are not practicing lawlessness.  We are not lying, stealing, cheating, pretending to be religious, while taking advantage of others and living with a sinful heart.

That verse you use to back up the theory of purgatory, which even the Catholic church has never proven there was such a place and they admit it was an idea based on what they think the verse may mean...

It's exactly what you think it is... a trying by the Fire of the Holy Spirit to reveal if our works were done out of love for Jesus or for other motives. It will take an instant for the Holy Spirit to reveal that to us and to burn off anything that was not for Jesus.  It's not a place where you will stay, and its not about purifying the soul to be good enough for Heaven.

We have the promise of Heaven and we can go...  even without works attached to us, if we are saved.  Some will get in, by the scorch of their robes...  You believe there will be a place called Purgatory where you will be confined until you are purified for Heaven.  But, there is no place like that carved out in the word of God, nor is there any word to imply that the Holy Spirit would stay there at all.  The trail by fire of our works and deeds for rewards will take a moment.  We are covered by the blood, this trial won't keep us from Heaven, it will only determine if we have earned rewards.  Something we cannot know here.  But, in an instant the Holy Spirit will reveal in us, what is true and what will burn away.

Not purgatory.  Even the Catholic church admits they cannot prove there is such a place or such a process.
