I was walking in the house and hit my self in the leg just above and at the ankle.

That was  about 5 hours ago, and walking on it hurts and  a pain just when I am

sitting.....  and when I walk its real bad, I am hoping some one can tell me if I

will be better ?  with out having to go to the doctor ?   I  think it would be much sharper

if  I need a doctor ?    It does easy up when still .   I hope some one has a clue to this ?

Any ideas  at all please !    And thank you very much.............!

Grams,

I am not a doctor and this is ot medical advice, but if I were you I would sit with my foot elevated and appy ice to your ankle and legs area.... ( if you have some frozen peas or corn that works great as an ice bag wrapped in some paper towels) ( if not ice cubes in a baggie wrapped in paper towels will do.)  20 minutes on 30 off..

This is to reduce any inflammation from the bruised area.

You likely will get a bruise that may last longer then you think it should.

If you cannot tolerate the ice, a heating pad on low might help the pain but wont take any inflammation out.

If it starts to swell badly then you will need the doctor or Med Express or Emergency room

Likely to be sore walking for a couple of days but if it gets worse or seems no better in 3 days I would go to the doctor.

Thank you Ginger.  It seems my post suggesting the same thing was lost somewhere.

Miss Ginger gave you some good advice, we will be praying for you to feel better~It's not much the doctor can do or say other than what Miss Ginger said to you. It will be okay in time.  ::prayinghard::

Grams, I experienced a similar situation as that about two years ago.  What happened was that I initially developed a hair-line fracture.  I ignored it, thinking I would just work through the pain and it would get better.  It didn't.  It broke.  And when that happened it REALLY hurt.  I ended up having to get a couple of screws put in.  It took a good six weeks in a "boot" for it to heal.

I would suggest that you go to the emergency ward of your hospital to determine whether or not you have just bruised it or whether it is more than that.  Don't mess around just hoping it will improve.

Alan

I think swelling is the tell tale here, if it's swollen then get it checked. If the pain is severe when standing, get it checked. There are more reasons than not to have it checked by a physician, don't take chances with fractures. Undetected fractures can lead to severe infection, nerve damage, pulmonary embolism, etc.

Get well soon grams!

RB

On second thought 4WD advice should be heeded.

Did you have screws put anywhere else besides there? Now I'm beginning to see your problem.  ::smile::

I  just  soaked my foot in  cold water......  and it felt good..
Maybe later in ice also........  I wish I had a chance to do this  on day one  or two......

Its still puffy , I was stubborn  and did not do it in ice as I should have.... next time I will know
better......

grams

Well,  I am still wearing  slippers...... have not been out side yet.

But am feeling  better now, but the puffy  swollen  is still there but not
as much as it was.......

grams

I  went  grocery shopping  yesterday with my daughter in law,   I should not have done that.....
Today it   hurts some.......

The  family  [  I live with my son his wife and there 8 children ]   is gone for the day,  the  one
girl and two boys,,,,,,,,,,  have  weight lifting  today  ,  I guess its against other schools ???
They are doing well........ wish I could  have  gone......

mommydi

Wait a minute. Grams, you're coming up on a month since this happened, and you're still swollen, hurting, and having mobility issues??

You haven't mentioned going to the doctor. Did you ever go? You must go, grams, and at least get an x-ray to make sure there are no fractures. It could be a tendon, a bone, who knows?

Please, grams...GO TO THE DOCTOR!!!

We will continue to bug you about this until you go! (or at least I will  ::smile:: )

BTW, what does your son and daughter-in-law say about it?

Grams,

Listen to mommydi. Get to the doctor or to an emergency place to get an x ray

It has been too long for it to be unattended to.

You need to have a doctor check it out and tell you it will just take time rather than assume it.

If you have a problem ignoring it might end you up in a wheel chair and you do not want that.

Greetings Grams ~ You can go to the doctor ~ Or ~ you can handle it like a sports injury ~ baby it a bit ~ you didn't break a bone right ~ it's been a couple days since you hurt your leg ~ so ~ too late for ice pack ~ what I would do is: Soak it in a pan of hot water not too hot ~ 104 F ~ allow the water to become almost cool ~ than ~ fill the pan with cold water and give it a good 10 min ```

The hot water gets the blood moving ~ the cold water brings the foot/leg back down to size ~ there's a pumping action ~ do this for 3-5 days ~ at night you can ware a sock or with some Mentholatum on the effect area ~ you'll be smiling is a few days ```

Good luck and God Bless ```

Ohan

Ohan

Just read some of the posts ~ all contain good advice and good wishes ```

grams

Thank you  ALL   very much !

notreligus

Swelling still there?  You've got a build up of some sort of fluid there.  This needs to be examined by a doctor and the doc will probably want to take an image of this.   As has been stated, this has lasted too long.

grams

Thanks,  notreligus,
Well,  my son seems to think it will be ok....... so unless it  last till next week and dose not
show any improvement,  I will go maybe then ?     I sure cant take much more of this.

Ohan

Greetings my lady ~ isn't easy is it ~ a good thump on the leg causes ripples ~ sometimes involves the nearest joint ~ it takes time ~ I would be interested ~ if you've time to know what you've done ~ what treatment ~ if you've time ```

God love and heal you ```

Ohan

grams

I am not doing any thing  for it, but do not go out walking any more.

Last week I went shopping and I should not have.  So this week I am
staying home.   I am going to try to walk  a little more around the house
each day.    As long as the puffy stuff stays there not to much  walking.
When its going down I will  go walk  more........   ::smile:: ::smile::

Ohan

You mention puffy ~ swollen you mean ~ keeping it up for a while each day ~ as someone posted is a good idea ```

Wife and I were professional skiers ~ we've had injuries to take care of ~ your body will take care of this ~ you do have to baby an injury ~ a leg ~ that is required to carry your total body weight ~ takes time ```

With all due respect, your son is not a doctor. This has been a month already, you need to see a doctor and you just may need to INSIST that your son takes you.

Mere Nick

Don't be so hasty, Alan.  Maybe the son talked to lady behind the counter at the convenience store about it.  Me?  Like you say, it's been a month.  Should have been to the doc at least 3 weeks ago.

Grams.

Day after Christmas my 93 year old aunt fell and ended up going to he hospital in an ambulance.

She bruised her shoulder and badly twisted her knee. Hospitalized a couple of days, she then was sent to a rehab place
for therapy.

Once home, home health came for about a week for therapy at home.

She has been complaining her knee was still very swollen and sore. But kept telling mom that the doc at the hospital or therapy said it would take a very long time.

OK, it's about 7 weeks or so and two days ago she fell again cause she is unsteady in the best of times....

So another ambulance to the hospital and the physical therapist check things. Her swollen knee needed drained, and the other one she injured when she fell 2 days ago. So tonight she is going back to the rehab place for that to be worked on.

Had she listened to mom and gone back to the doc after 2 weeks of being home the first time likely she would not
have had this recent accident.

So if your son wants you to wait until next week... do so.... but sit down and do not move except to eat, bathroom breaks,
and to go to bed.

By the way. It is Friday and in 3 days will be next week. Was he referring to next Friday?

mommydi

Rella, it's a catch 22 with sitting down and doing nothing until a possible doctor's visit. I'm thinking deep vein thrombosis is a possibility with such limited mobility. OTOH, like you say, moving too much could cause more damage.

Grams, is it a financial decision to delay seeing the doctor? If so, shoot me a pm and some of us can see about helping out!

Yes, Grams... let mommydi or even I know.... if you ehelp.

Mommydi, I was thinking more of the pain causeing her to be unsteady and falling and maybe breaking a hip or something.

grams

Well,  Every morning when I wake  up  , I look at my leg and it seems
like its better, a little that is.... But as I get to walk to the kitchen or
to the living room, it seems to go back some and as the day gets longer
its back to puffy looking.   When I hit my ankle, I fell down on my knees
and body, and the left leg is the  trouble the other is fine.
It  really does not hurt, just feel  very puffy at times....
I guess  my problem now is  hoping I can go home...   My family
all passed  away in there 70's  and why I am still here  at 83  I sure
wonder ?

Hi Grams ~ Well you're 2 years older than me ~ I noticed that too ~ all close family ~ that I grew up knowing are suddenly gone ~ we have to take care of our self ~ listen my lady ~ I was a pro skier ~ that injury of yours will hang on for a while ~ if you go to the doctor they will put you on: Non steroidal Anti-inflammatory drugs ~ it is better for our bodies to get rid of that retained moisture (puffyness) naturally with: First Hot, then cold water as I described ~ which pumps the puffiness out ~ the reason for the pain is the Hydraulic Pressure caused by all that retention of liquid in the tissue ```

I wish you God speed in your healing ~ take care my sister ```
Ohan

My concern is a fracture but let's hope that you're correct.

grams

Well,  today  it is finally  better !!!!!!   The swelling is about gone,
all though later if I walk on it a lot it will come back.

I still  feel a little were I hit it......  but not  much, and not pain.

Thanks  Every One !
And I am not going to go shopping   this week....  I learned a lesson
the other week........

Jaime

Great news! Thanks for the update Grams. Be careful with it.

grams

I guess my age is making it last longer.....

I guess this is going to last a long time......

But, today I noticed  I was walking regular !

It felt so good to be able to do that......

And I guess the puffy  stuff  I can see in the other leg.
which  I have been  having in the evenings  , even before this happened.

Ohan

Sure age makes a good thump last longer ~ there is damaged material that needs to be moved out and fresh repair to be moved in ~ we move less and slower ~ moving our limbs causes a pumping action the moves old, used, and discard material out and new in ```

Yep, it's our own fault ~ gota move more, and a little faster helps a bit as well ```

There is so much snow here in the mountains ~ and a storm is brewing as we speak ```

grams

Yep,  we still have snow,  not a lot !

I am not  able to do any walking now.....  I have had a cold now for
2 weeks...... and feeling  sick and slow......  getting a little better ....
