all melody, no intentional harmony, free rhythm, no hymnal or power point needed...

"line out" your songs. an ancient method that some still prefer.
visit below & give a listen. do this once & no one will ever think another song is very slow.
i like it.

Interesting.  There was a Sacred Harp convention in my region over the weekend.  I wonder if it sounds similar?

different sound, smililar literature.  harmony avoided as too showy.

Oh, speaking of Sacred Harp, I went to a convention at Belmont University this past weekend.  Interesting style of singing.  They would sing the songs once through with the shaped notes (do, re, mi, etc.) and then sing through the verses.  Lively singing... and loud.  Of course, it was in a room with hardwood floors and lots of hard surfaces for the sound to bounce all over the place.

I hate hate hate singing in a dead room.  Thank God for hardwood.

Will listen when Mike gets all his doo-hickeys prtoperly installed on the computer again.

Well, I've heard someone line out a song now.  I went to see Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys at the new local high school tonight, and Ralph Stanley lined out Amazing Grace.  He said this was the way they did it in the old-style a capella Baptist church where he grew up.  He invited everyone to participate in the repeating, and I did.

This showed how good his voice still is (he turns 80 in February) better than anything else he sang tonight, including "Oh Death".

btw, my aunt made the comment afterward that she'd never say we sang too slow at church again.  But it was great.

In a letter to A Campbell printed in the Millennial Harbinger waaaaaaaay back a brother said he recalled traveling with T Campbell and that old brother Campbell lined out some hymns during some of their meetings. This is roots music for us in the CoC.

Love the songs, that what I was raised on.

Used to be some folks at the Baptist Theological Seminary in New Orleans that were into Sacred Harp, who'd have some gatherings there.

That was pre-Katrina, though, I'm thinking the same people may not be working there anymore.

Will poke around and see... I'd love to go to take part in some Sacred Harp.

:) i'm happy some of us here have gotten to experience it!
