Why have preachers all of the sudden started stuttering?

All of the sudden in the last couple of years I have noticed that preachers mannerisms have changed to include stuttering. Instead of just saying I or Him ect, they say I-I-I-I or Hi-Hi-Hi-Him. It's not just one or two but dozens that I have heard. This past year at NYR I would venture to say that over half of the speakers did this. What is the point of this???

So they're doing it on purpose? Trying to emphasize certain words? Interesting.

I had heard it for years by various preachers. I did it for a while when I preached...just for emphasis when I felt it was needed.

Maybe this happens among the denominations, but amongst the true Lord's Church of which I am a member, it is not.

I don't get it, how and why do you make yourself stutter?

It used to be (maybe still is and I haven't noticed it as much) that mostly denominational preachers would keep repeating "we don't have much time left" or something to that effect. Now, especially with denominational beliefs creeping into the restoration movement, I hear and see this stuttering. I'm guessing that they're being taught to do this, but older guys are now starting to do it too, albeit not as much.

There must be better ways than stuttering to capture the audience's attention during a sermon.

This reminds me of that old time cofC preacher, V.E. Howard, who had a weekly radio broadcast. At least once during his broadcasts, he'd pause and ask, "Are you listening?" My parents listened to his broadcasts, and if we were in the car headed home from my grandparents, there was no escaping the V.E. Howard show. With five of us in a little VW beetle, we all listened to the same radio shows on car trips. Anyway, it got to the point of listening intently just to try to guess when he'd insert a "are you listening?" comment.

At 5:55, you can hear him say, "hear me - are you listening?"

Didn't Charles Stanley used to repeat a phrase during his sermons to get people's attention?? Was it, "listen to me" or something similar??
