Personal witness to history

Two weeks ago this Saturday I witnessed the first ever Division I-A game that finished regulation 0-0 and produced a winner.

Dear old Arkansas State did a great job shutting down Florida Atlantic coached by Howard Schenellenburger. Gave up 167 yards and the Owls made it into ASU territory twice in regulation. First time they made it to the 48 and were stopped. Second time they made it to the ASU 27 courtesy of an interception return and missed a FG.

My guys did a little better on offense with 393 yards but we turned the ball over 4 times in field goal range. Missed a FG on another trip into FAU territory and turned that ball over on downs.

ASU picked off a FAU pass in the first OT and on our OT possession just went off-tackle over and over (with our 3rd string tailback, #1 reinjured his ankle and #2 had a knee sprain and didn't play) until we got inside their five.

Kicked a FG and went home with a 3-0 OT victory. Funny thing is that was the second game in a row for our kicker to kick a game winning FG on the last play of the game. Until the game before it hadn't happened at ASU for 15 years.

Kicked on 3rd down because our punter/holder was suspended from the team after practice the day before. The FG kicker also punted and was only 0.7 yards per kick off the regular punter's average.

You must be proud. I'm sure 60 years from now people will be saying "I still remember where I was when I heard that 0-0 score".

Never know. I had two out-of-state friends call my cell phone as I was leaving the stadium to ask what happened because they thought the on-line scoring dates were fried.

I'm gonna witness history next weekend when UK beats UT in football for the first time that I started watching football in addition to basketball in 1995......  :D
