What is the "Jubilee controversy?"

As I understand the mess, our dear errant brothers in Nashville came up with the idea of having a great celebration of the Restoration movement along with lectures, meetings, classes and the general exchange of ideas from congregations around the world. They might have even buttonholed other churches for help supporting mission projects.

This was of course seen as a thinly disguised effort to have all the congregations start moving toward a unified governance structure. I suppose Rubel Shelly was to be the cofC pope but I've not been able to confirm that.

Why was Jubilee was more offensive than the Tulsa Soul Winning Workshop, the ACU and Pepperdine Lectureships or Streams in Desert? I have no idea.

Must be all the heathens there, and liberals and 'denominationally challenged' folks, the wishy-wash "why can't we all get along" crowd.  Yeah, all those hellbound dupes.

Why, a gathering like Tulsa is at best a glorified county fair and at worst a temple full of moneychangers; there's trade there in the name of God, in the name of God!

And there might even be some fun, excitement and entertainment interspersed between the moments of worship, holy reverence and awe...

Can't have that! :0  :0    :(  :0

It's my understanding that the opposition to Jubilee and Tulsa came about when certain ones went to Nashville and Tulsa to expose and condemn "hard liqour and wild women".

Finding no hell holes or passion pits in either city they settled on Rubel and Marvin.

"strickly tonque in cheek" inspired by Janine's great sense of humor.

When still ministering and moving in RM circles, my periodical reading list kept me quite up to date.  Regularly read "The Christian Century" and "Disciple" from the DoC, "Christian Standard" and "Restoration Herald" from independent CC, and the "Gospel Advocate" and "Restoration Review" from the CoC.

These days I only see the "Christian Standard" with any regularity.  Mother-in-law always brings her stash when she comes to visit.  Bless her heart.  Also been reading through the archives here at GCM.

All that leading to this question...

What is the "Jubilee controversy?"

I wait with "baited" (ha!) breath to hear about it, too.

As fond as some of the people around me are of introducing innocent Christians to controversies we'd never have heard of... schisms we'd never have thought of... I'd never heard of the Jubilee thing until a couple of passing refs. on the 'Net.

BTW, years ago my husband & I called it "The Gossip Advocate" rather than "The Gospel Advocate", due to its flavor of brother-bashing and division-mongering.  We couldn't understand why one of our elders would have in in the reception/waiting area of his business instead of just about any other reading material...  I understand it's improved a lot since then.

Fill me in on the Jubilee thingy, do. :)

marc

Probably because of that name--Rubel Shelly.  That one of the conservative wing would change and become a leading voice among the progressives was more than they could handle, so he has become the prime target.

btw, in a strange twist, I heard a few years ago that some our local watchdogs were saying Jubilee was okay but you'd better stay away from Tulsa.

Got to ask now...What's wrong with "Tulsa"?  Have anything to do with...trying to recall the name...Marvin Phillips?

Different things are taught, and since we have had all truth continually since the first Church of Christ sign went up in 33 AD, anything different is from the devil! ???

I really wish the above statement was only a joke.

One thing I have found to be very hypocritical of CoC preachers is that they will scream bloody murder concerning missionary societies overthrowing the God ordained structure of congregational autonomy but these very same "gospel preachers" go out and start their own "publishing companies" for the express purpose of being able to print the religious literature that they want without having to worry about what some one else would think (or that they would pull the plug on preacher man's plans).  Oh, well, just a rant I had to get out.

Nope we don't follow the day of Pentecost church we are really more on the lines of post-Jerusalem council (ie. Paul, Barnabas, Peter, other Apostles, and elders approving giving up circumcision).

Egads the church HAS changed!

janine

They didn't even find wild liquor nor hard women...  :p

I second that inquiry Old Dad. I'm out of that loop too! By the way, thank you for joining us!

I find it humorous that people who say to stay away from Tulsa are people who never really went...
