Biden Approves Trump-era Lease in Gulf of Mexico
As the saying goes, Joe Biden is trying to have his cake and eat it too.

Biden just approved a massive oil and gas lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico.

Lease Sale 259 was canceled last year by the Biden administration, but there was language in the Inflation Reduction Act that required the lease to be reinstated by March 31 of this year. The lease is for 73.3 million acres of federal waters for the purpose of oil and gas drilling, reports The Hill.

Advocates Lose Their Minds
The lease went for a total of $263.8 million and it is among the largest in history, with only a Trump-era sale in 2021 besting it.

Biden is already blaming this on Trump, trying to deflect away from the fact that he told voters that there would be no more drilling on federal land or water. But the fact of the matter is the law mandates that certain lease sales must occur and Biden cannot stop that. He delayed it as long as possible, but the lease sales are mandated by Congress and have nothing to do with Trump.

Holly Hopkins, the American Petroleum Institute's vice president of upstream policy, stated, "While today's lease sale is a belated but positive step toward a more energy-secure future, it should not take an act of Congress to get us to this point.

"Continued production in the Gulf of Mexico is essential for delivering the energy the world needs while supporting lower carbon goals, but U.S. energy producers need certainty from policymakers in order to meet the growing energy demand," reports Fox News.

She added, "It is well past time for the Department of the Interior to finalize a five-year program for federal offshore leasing that will empower U.S. energy producers to meet the needs of consumers here at home and around the world."

On the flip side of that is Earthjustice, which is representing a group of environmentalists that are challenging Biden's authority to hold the lease sale.

Earthjustice attorney George Torgun stated, "The excessive and reckless scope of today's oil and gas lease sale demonstrates how badly our federal leasing program needs reform.

"The Biden Administration is not only holding a lease sale that is at odds with the law — but also succumbing to the wants of a profit-rich industry over the well-being of Gulf communities, vital ecosystems, and our urgent climate goals."

I am not sure how much success these groups are going to have in fighting this case. This was not an executive order, which we have seen challenged on a regular basis over the last six years. This was legislation that went through Congress, passed, and was signed into law.

There is really nothing the courts can to do stop it, or there shouldn't be, but you never know in this day and age when you get a liberal judge assigned to the case.
