I had always thought that Larry Norman's "Upon this Rock" (1969) was the first christian rock album.  Today I found out that there were at least 2 before it; both being hard/psychedelic rock liturgies, based on the Book of Common Prayer. MIND GARAGE - "Again! The Electric Liturgy"  in 1966 and the Electric Prune's "Mass in F minor." 1968.

Anyone familiar with these works?

No, I am not familiar with them, and I do not want to become familiar with them.  I do not like what "church music" has turned into.  I am not in favor of the rock & roll "worship music".  Most folks today have no idea how wonderful and great a real congregational song service even sounds like.

Most of the songs today might come off pretty well being sung by solo or small group as entertainment, but it is not good at all for congregational singing.

My view.

I agree 4WD, also too much repetition. I call it the 7/11 brand of worship music. Seven words sung at least eleven times in a row.   ::shrug::

I feel if we are trying to stick with what the bible says and be doers of the word it tells what kind of singing is acceptable unto the Lord in Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; did not see any mention of rock and roll

What Dave is talking about is not 7-11 songs.

Several years ago, my son started going to a church that has a full on excessively loud rock service - like a mosh pit situation. I'm not exaggerating. Imagine a rock concert mosh pit and you'd be close. It didn't take him long to get tired of it. It's definitely not my cup of tea and not for most church goers, I suppose.
This church also does something a little over-the-top for Halloween. While most churches are sponsoring Trunks or Treats, this church has haunted house thing called Nightmare, where they guide guests through rooms portraying incidents that show the consequences of a particular sin. Like they have a drunk driving room, with a crashed car, and bloody dead bodies and families crying and mourning. IDK if they still have it, but for a while, they were portraying an abortion, complete with bloody baby. They have a hell room - showing people in torment.
Anyway - sorry for getting off topic.  ::smile::

No - not off topic at all.

Those 2 bands dealt in the psychedelic music of the late 60s.  And the lyrics looked to me to be prayers right out of the Anglican Book of Common Prayer.
