I just ordered a weather alert radio from
Amazon to plug in my bedroom to hear any
weather and tornado alerts.

Last night there was tornado activity 15 to 20
minutes from here and also at a Farm Market
which is a 10 minute drive.

No warning on the TV... (watching cable) ... and
no warnings on cell as it is on mute or I have constant rings, bells and whistles.

When going to bed I check the cell for any texts and saw an alert that said

This is a weather alert. There has been a tornado warning in your area that touched down
If you need help dial 911.

So I ordered
Amazon
Midland - WR120B - NOAA Emergency Weather Alert Radio - S.A.M.E. Localized Programming, Trilingual Display, 60+ Emergency Alerts, & Alarm Clock

It might not be so good. IDK.

But my question is if you people who know about this stuff think I should get a second one... for the main part of the house?

Thanks

Jaime

Rella, my weather Channel App on my iphone gives me great information including tornado and thunderstorm warning and watche alerts etc. i can customize it to whatever location I am in and the radar information is really good for real time as well as near future times. We have some tornado risk in my area, but the most prevalent risk is large hail. It's rare to get a rainstorm hear without some hail. We have had to replace oir roof on our house several times over the years and it's good not to be out on the roads in larger hail. In the winter, the local driving conditions alerts due to ice or snow is also good.

In Midland we have only had 2 or 3 legitimate tor ado alerts in 40 years here. When I was living in Lubbock, 100 miles away, tornados are an every week issue somewhere close in the spring and summer.

I hope this helps. I am assuming you have a smart phone. If not maybe someone else here has a suggestion for you. Though I am probably in the last percentage of the population to get a cell phkne, I would be lost without my iphone in way more than phone calls and texts.

As an aside, I thought the following link about the Tornado Alley shifting Eastward is interesting.

Jaime,

Yes, I have Android (Samsung) ... (Will not go I-Phone)

I get notifications when the volume is up.

I cannot keep the volume up simply because of all the explative texting from family, friemds and more spam then anyone should have.

I also get spam calls and I got a new number about 18 months ago.

And every expletive time the volume is uop comes those sounds 24 hours a day from "Play Solitaire" which is not even on the phone that I know of....

So at bedtime, or usually after dinner, the volume is turned down.

So there would be nothing I could hear when asleep.

NO ONE around here has any tornado warnings unless they watch local channels and see the banners going across the top that say what is happening.

No sirens.... nothing.

The last tornado ( before these 3) I was notified by my cousin who lives mid state... 4 hours away.

She has her I-Phone with her always.... even in the bath.

She is very addicted.

Up until about 25 years ago there was never one here. Then
we had one that the news tracked and we watched on TV about 20 miles from here.

Now, about 10 years ago there were some of those down drafts... no tornados that flattened many trees in a large area in our township and the hext one over.

Snapped trees in half and flattened them but they were told it was not a tornado.... even though they looked like
one had gone through.

Now the twisters are several every year. Getting closer to our house.

We are not flat country either... a great many hills and mountains. ( hush TC) and were always told that was why we did not get them.....

Even people who moved here from San Francisco said Pittsburgh reminded them of there cause of all the ups and downs....

I thank you for your opinion.... What I ordered comes on the 22nd... and I can set it for just tornado info and for our county and the next one over.... (up to 25... not needed) and I think for just the warning, not the watch... so we shall see.

Most of our sever storms occur in the early evening before Midnight. If the weather reports seem ominous, I usually stay up listeningnto weather reports until the threatening storm  passes. I our area the thumder andnlightenjngbwill wake us up so we can turn on the tv to check out the weather reports. We don't get too many stealthy storms that fail to announce themselves! 😀 as a kid on a West Texas farm, we soent many nights in the storm cellar huddled around the transister radio. On our farm, the land from horizon to borizon was flat as a pancake with no trees, so we could see threatening weather coming for miles. My dad would hanf a rock on a string on a barbed wire fence near the house. When it was hanging horizontally, we usually went to the storm cellar., except in a typical sandstorm. 🙂

In Arlen, Texas, there was a major tornado several years ago that went through a trailer park.  A man was late trying to get the shelter.  He survived (barely) by hanging on to a pole.  The tornado stripped off all his clothes.  He made it through but was nude at the end.

Wow.

Good that he had the strength to hand on.
