The best introduction to the issues surrounding the Canon is F. F. Bruce's The Canon of Scripture (InterVarsity Press).  You can get this volume for a fair price at Amazon.com    Should you want more detailed info on just the NT I would move onto Bruce Metzger's The New Testament Canon and for the Hebrew Bible I would get R.T. Beckwith's The Old Testament Canon of the New Testament Church and Its Background in Early Judaism (Eerdmans).

But I would start with Bruce -- the field can be daunting at times.

I was at Barnes and Noble today but couldn't find any books specifically related to bible canon and the process/history of it.  Anyone have any suggestions on a book and author I can get my hands on?

Also, I bought a book called "The Complete Gospels" edited by Robert J. Miller - anyone read this?  It contains the canonical gospels as well as the gospels of Thomas, Mary, Peter, James, etc.. all recently (past 200 years) discovered from the Dead Sea Scrolls and other.

Some of those newly-found things are interesting.  Though I'm sure some of them are a total crock.

Hey, is it "canon" or "cannon"?  You know how you sometimes stare at a word, or even hear it, and for some reason it seems like you've never heard of it before?

Ed Fudge sent out a little mini-paper about how we got the Bible books we have.  I'll post it if I can find it, it might be useful.

A Good place to start is "A General Introduction to the Bible" by Geisler and Nix
It will take you through alot of useful info about how we got the bible....
