I like the bold colors, and just where in LA is that mountain? It's not the Indian Mounds on the LSU campus is it, I don't remember them being that high?

I'd like to see Lake Vermillion or a scene from Painecourtville if possible.

Keep on, you're going in the right direction.

much too pretty.  a nice, dismal swampy area,w/voracious alligators.....yeah, that's it.....fetid pools of rapidly breeding mosquitoes!!!!
now that's a website backdrop for ya.

Lord have mercy on me, the first page is ALL I've done!

I'm waiting on my son to find my Office Windows 2000 CD so I can do some tinkering & set up some other pages.

Janine and Mike,

The free sites are nice and good for limited web sites but they tend to be hard to find for many people.  Be sure to register your site with a group of seach engines so it will come up when someone is trying to search you out by church name.  There is a free service that will register with 15 or 20 of the more popular engines.  There are also pay services that are much more thorough with search engines, however, I have had excellent results from the free and minimal charge regisistration sites.  The main problem I have had with the free sites is that they are very limited.  For along time, Granbury CoC ( http://www.granburycoc.org ) used the web space provided by our ISP as "free" space with the dialup service.  It amounted to about 2 MB of space but the URL was so long and difficult to remember that many members would not visit it unless they had it stored in their favorites folder.  When Linda and I moved to Granbury, I started working with them on obtaining their own URL and purchasing server space, along with additional services such as email accounts for the staff and several elders, along with some other possibilities, which includes a list server dedicated just to the church members to allow discussion and group emailing of the mid weekly bulletin, that we also publish on the web site.  Our web server now supplies us with 1000MB of web space, 15 pop3 email accounts with one of the best associated webmail access sites I have found (includes online appointments calendar, notes, etc), autoresponders, list servers, and etc, along with a generous amount of bandwidth for less than $120.00/yr and a price garrantee of never going up in price for as long as you use their services.  We are using www.featureprice.com (the same one I use for my website).  Registration of a unique URL varies from $15.00 to $25.00 per year for a 3yr purchase, and gets cheaper for longer periods depending on which company does your URL registration.  I have been working with one of the secretaries at church to take over most of the weekly posting duties so I can work on some other areas like an online password controlled photo directory that is planned for the near future and the email servers.  If you have access to Frontpage 2002, it is extremely easy to use and quite powerful for the small amount of money spent.  If you are using Word 2000, you will find it limited in what it will do compared to Frontpage 2000 or especially 2002 but good for the basic stuff.

Janine,

When you get the disk, reinstall Office 2000.  When it comes up what file/programs do you wish to install, it will have a number of programs listed.  The way Office 2000 installs is to do a very limited installation to start with by leaving many required files to run off the installation disk or to be installed on a need basis.  If you will right click(I think :>) ) on the very top choice of that install menu, it will give you the several options on how to run Office 2000.  One is to "run all from your hard drive".  If you check/click on that, it will turn all the (+) signs shown from grey to white. This will install the entire Office 2000 product to your hard drive.  As long as you have about 450 MB of free space on your drive, you will never need the installation disk again unless you have to fix a problem at somepoint in the future.

Here's just the opening page.

Seems to be a really good provider, as far as places a church can go for free & low-cost website related stuff.

I started with the only "face" that had a seashore/water theme.  Just so happens the footprints in the sand fit with the "following Jesus" thing.  Sure, it's gaudy, but I'll be adapting it.  Besides, I like gaudy.

Opinions?  Suggestions?

Remains to be seen which will win, me or the program.

Yeah, no mountains here.  And if the surf got that bad in the Gulf it would mean we were having a hurricane. :p

This is gonna be a drawn-out, tinker-with-it-again process.  That's why I started it so early.  That way it might actually be functioning and have some content when we get down there!

Hey, Bob, what short & sweet things have you written explaining who those crazy Church of Christ people are?  I'll need some things like that.  Like, who are we and what the heck do we want on the bayou?  (cue spooky music: "We want your soooooooulsss...") :0  :p

janine

Oh, be satisfied!  Purple was the gloomiest color they had.

Son of a Preacher Man

Looks like a good start to me.

I haven't been able to update ours for three weeks and I don't know if its my PC, my ISP, or my SERVER!!!!! :bangingheadagainstwall:

So, I'm jealous in a Godly way that you are able to do anything at all.

mike

Janine,

We're just beginning, as well. Thought you might like to take a look at the "Who Are We" section on our website:

Court Drive Church of Christ

I adapted it from some material I found elsewhere. You may want to use some of the phrases there as a starting point.

Let me tell you what you're getting into.

Ours is now about 25 Meg's in size.  I built the basics after about ten straight days of solid work.  After that, I would update it twice each week (about 3 hours each time).

:typing: Then we'd add another page... an article page for the ladies... a youth page... a guest article... archives... sermons... meetings... ARGGGHH!:typing: Maybe when I'm unmasked (great, I sound like Gene Simmons) I'll share it.  (And that should happen before too long... just waiting on this one thing... long story.)

Now this! :bangingheadagainstwall:

 I will pray for you.  Pray.  Pray very hard indeed.

Has anybody seen the commercial about the quarter jar?

The guy yelling at his computer :computertrouble:   and his daughter is all excited because every time somebody gets made they have to put a quarter in the jar?  Cha-ching!

That's my household.

I really like what the church we are attending has to say on its page about "who we are."

http://www.swestcc.org/churchofchrist.shtml

It is one of the things that drew us to visit this congregation.

SoaPy : I am still very much an innocent about computer-related things.

What Danny Thomas used to call a "holy innocent".  The way I heard him use the phrase, he meant sweet, innocent, retarded people and very young children, people untouched by sin.

Imagine me still very much wide-eyed and dewey-complected, not hardened at all.  I don't know enough yet about computers to be properly offended and frustrated when they act up.  It's just "Oh, shucky-darn, I guess I'll get son/nephew to fix it."  And they do.

Give me time.  I'm sure I'll "Fall" one day.  It's inevitable.

Hey Mike, wonderful site.  Great trees.

You've got a lot of room for stuff on those pages.  When do you think you can put in pictures of people?  That's my favorite part of church websites, is the pix of the people.

The "Who Are We?" stuff may be useful - that's the kind of "Who We Are" I like to see.

Wiley - at this point, all I want is "simple".  Thanks so much for the info, though, it will be handy later.

The reason I mentioned the Windows program is because while I was setting the site up, the computer asked me to put that Office Windows disc in.  I guess it needs a program Mikey never installed, or deleted when we got the new computer.

Remember, we're not even down there yet.  I hope to have it up and running by the time we go, but what happens if our current congregation jumps up with all sorts of help and assistance and mother-henning, and it's seen as presumptious of me to even have started it?  Mike is real iffy about me bothering with it before we're "on the ground".  You wouldn't think such a naturally bull-headed man would always be after me to keep my head down.  He doesn't keep his down!

So, I don't want to put too much money into it, and when we haven't even got a bunch of congregational info yet to put on it, we don't need more than the free American Bible Society site.  Yet. :thumbs-up:

Karen: Thanks, it is a good site too.  No wonder you went & checked it out.
