Bon Voyage

Hey, Nice to see you here Phil.  I would like to give a shout out to Jim Abb as well.

Hi Phil,

I am moving to Nashville myself in about a month. Glad to have you on the boards here. I plan to attend Woodmont Hills when we get there.

Phil,

I am just a few years older than you and also went to LU, but didn't graduate.  I left early instead to marry the man of my dreams.

I too wish they had not fired Doug, but as much as I disagree, they explained the "policies" of the school and gave all those involved the chance to "change their minds."  Again, before you rant and rave, let me make it clear I agree with you.  I do, however, feel that EVERYONE associated with LU has been aware of the longstanding policy for the faculty to be members of the COC.  This, of course, means non-instrumental COC.  When Hendersonville went the instrumental route, they ceased to become "COC" in the minds of the "policy."  Whether or not I agree with it, they do have the right to decide who teaches based on those criteria.  It is not a public institution.

I have not cut off my ties with LU because there has been a lot of good come from the university.  If nothing else, that is where I met my husband!  I look at it this way, I certainly wish I had the opportunity to go to Otter Creek (tell Jon Butler he had better email me!!!), or Hendersonville, or even Woodmont Hills, but I am in a city where things aren't that progressive.  So even though I don't agree with a lot of things my church does, or doesn't do, I don't bash them, I love them, pray for change, and try to surround myself with opportunites to feed my "progressive" side (such as Streams).  I hope this makes sense.  I am not real good sometimes at saying things.

God Bless,

Karise

I know...it is frustrating.  Who knows the answers?

Streams is a spiritual renewal weekend sponsored by the Golf Course Rd. Church of Christ in Midland, TX.  It is in its 6th or 7th year and it such a great time for all to get fed!  Lots of praise and worship and you hear a great message too.  We have a special communion service on Sat. which always blows my mind.  It does not get "old".  This year it is March 15-17 and Wiley has info about it on several of his posts. Look under my intro.  I think there are some links there.  You should go.  I tried getting Jon Butler to go last year.  Ya'll get a group together and come!!!

Yes, I was.

I think the class was English History up to 1715. I remember really enjoying that class, as opposed to Gaw's Western Civ II where I fell asleep almost everyday.

Phil Wilson

Well just a bit about me.

I'm 30 years old, attended Lipscomb University, graduated with an English Ed degree in '94. However, I don't claim LU much any more, simply because I can't condone an institution that will take money from Gwen Shamblin and fire Doug Varnado.

I live in Nashville and attend Otter Creek Church of Christ. I'm married with a 7 month old daughter.

I've lurked here for a couple of months and am a semi-regular poster at the Gospel Advocate Message Board, where I try to avoid stupid arguments or start them, depending on the mood and how much I'm listening to God.

I love the spirit I've seen on this board and I'm glad to find as many others as I have on the journey to realizing that we all deserve Hell, but have gracefully ben granted eternal life in Christ.

chrischar

Cool. I like Nashville. I have heard something about Lipscomb firing some people just because they were not COC. Don't like that, but I do think that Lipscomb has made great strides for our fellowship.

Yeah, Woodmont Hills is for those pseudo-liberals. If you want super-liberals, Otter Creek is the place to be.

:p

Phil Wilson

I understand what you're saying, Karise, but it really infuriates me that they will fire Doug and name a theater after the Shamblins, knowing the heresy that's still perpetuated from the Weigh Down Workshops. If you want to know more, we can discuss here in another topic or feel free to email me.

Thanks.

P.S. "Streams"?

Phil,

Here's the links for Stream.

Hope you can come!  It is one of the most spiritually uplifting events I have ever attended.  It's one of those events that you talk about how good it was for the first half of the year and then talk and plan plan on returning for the remaining half of the year.

Phil,

I spent a short time at Lipscomb as an older student, and actually graduated from DLU in December '93 (English major, History minor).  You're name is familiar, but I wasn't terribly involved on campus (when you're 30+ you don't really do the college stuff full-throttle).  Did you have a class with Dr. Gaw in a small room with only a handful of students, who sat around a table?  I'm trying to remember what class this was--English history or European history or some such thing.
