I don't know of any true sports that has a DH.  I've heard tell of innovations, though.

DHs are either one trick ponies or washed up bums who still get paid more than the lady at the convenience store.  If ya ain't gonna field it, you ain't got no business swinging at it.

spurly

How do you feel about pinch hitters for pitchers in the NL?  Often they are put in, and then taken back out of the game before they are sent to the field!  What say you, Nick?

twd

I voted Other, as in None.  The DH is a great blight on the American League.

Pinch hitters, on the other hand, are interesting, because they are not lightly put in.  This is especially true if a pitcher is doing well, as it means a change of pitcher, and not a free ride.

Dennis

I would much rather see Big Papi coming to bat than some guaranteed out pithcer.

spurly

I agree Dennis.  It makes the game more excited.  Makes the pitchers work harder.  And has the added bonus of helping pitchers avoid injuries that they could get by batting and running the bases.

twd

There are several NL pitchers who are not guaranteed outs.  Besides, if you coddle the pitchers to much, they come to expect it.   ::smile::

spurly

Having DHs also keeps the opposing team from throwing at your pitcher to knock them out of the game.

Weeble

Barry Bonds.  Oh wait that will be next year for the A's.

That's completely different.  You have to yank the pitcher.

I think the mob uses designated hitmen.

Bon Voyage

Carlos Guillen, from the Detroit Tigers.   ::amen!::

What is your favorite fatal disease?

Marc, Marc, Marc.  You miss the point.  The DH is not a terminal cancer.  Remember, Buff told us that people in the "paid ministry"  ::priest:: are the real terminal cancer, the real fatal disease.

Bon Voyage

Spurly, and they are probably on the down low, too.  That would tidy up the AIDS thread with the paid located ministers thread.

Thanks (I think) for the clarification Jerry.

David Ortiz is definitely not my favorite DH after his walk off home run against the Rangers in game 1 of todays day/night double header.

I'm a traditional purist - the DH has to go.  So, no favorite designated hitter for me.  Put a bat in Curt Shilling's hands and let him hit away.

The National League is the only league in the world that does not us a DH.  The minors, colleges, all of Japanese, Korean, and Latin baseball leagues have a DH.  I'm a purist, too.  But sometimes it's just time to move on with the way the game is played now.  Like it or not, I'll bet the National League will be moving to a DH before too many years.

I do wish that in interleague play, that they would let the pitcher hit in the American League parks and use the DH in the National League parks.  That way hometown fans would get to see the other way to play the game.

Then all that means is that the National League could also be called The One True League.

Matthew 7:13-15 (King James Version)

Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:  Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

If Bob has a problem with everyone else, Bob is usually the problem...  (John Maxwell)

::pondering::

then it stands to reason...

If the NL has a problem with everyone else using the DH, then maybe the NL is the problem...

I don't think it's coincidental that Beelzebush owned an AL team and employed DH's.
That is,  I suspect,  fertile recruiting ground for henchmen.
I bet it's DH's who calibrate the hurricane generator.

Bon Voyage

And some of the after effects of Katrina and Rita meant a lot more people in Houston (the Astros), which caused problems.

Dang that man and his Risian Hurricane Generator!

Cross-titled

It's Steinbrenner's fault in there somewhere, too.

boringoldguy

Have you ever seen Steinbrenner and Beelzebush in the same place?

Think about it.

Not coincidental, but indicative.  And to gouge the thumb of posterity into the eyes of our forefathers, men who pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to establish this nation, Beelzebush goes and puts a T-ball field on the White House grounds.
