Let's see, what's to understand about the context?  it was given to jews who God called to be a holy people that he was goign to work through to bring the world back to himself through Jesus Christ.

They were going into a land full of idol worshipers.  These idol worshipers had a practice of cutting themselves "for the dead" and it is very probably that the tattoo marks referred to were also ritualistic.  Thus, God says, my people are not to be idol worshipers - since they don't worship idols they are not to mark themselves for the dead as those who worship idols do.

Most people today who cut their flesh and get tattoos are not doing it in conjunction with any idol worship.  Though I don't like tattoos, unless one is doing it to identify themselves with some form of idol worship I don't think this verse applies to them.

Amen brother!

Cool beans! Take a pic for us....er....as long as it isn't in a place that is too revealing.

Well, I have a lovely blackwork piece on my lower back (what some here are calling a "tramp stamp", lol) that you're welcome to see a pic of if the moderators don't object.  My 30th birthday gift will be (I'm thinking) three little black footprints on the top of my foot to honor my three little girls for whom I am so stinkin' proud to be "mommy".

Congrats on the 30th! When you get those footprints, give us a look, okay? Nothing better than proud mommas and daddys. ;)

I did it! I got my first tattoo. Here's my pic of it. It looks clearer than in the pic. It is a tribal purple rosebud.

No, it didn't really hurt and I expected it to. It took about an hour and I just laughed and talked through the whole thing. Being a person who has borne 6 kids and fallen a lot from rollerskating, has made me tougher thatn I thought.

I don't think I will catch up with Lydia. This is my first one and my 22 year old son asked why I waited till I was 55. I have done a lot of firsts since turning 50, including karaoking for the first time just before turning 53. What's next? Maybe one more tattoo. Maybe I might eventually get my ears pierced.

My cousin has many tattoos and she is 60 going on 25, but don't tell her that she is making many a jokes behind her back about that.  ::frown::

She posted her last one on our family website stating it was 2 hours of hell. She asked any of us if we would want to have one.  I said, for some reason 2 hours of hell doesn't appeal to me.

Your tattoo is pretty seekr, but just not my thang.   ::hug::

I understand it isn't everyone's thing, but it definitely suits me. I'm sorry people feel the need to laugh at your cousin...but that is their problem and their shame. It sounds as if she is fun-loving and doesn't care what others think.

I was afraid of the pain, which is why I did put it off for so long, but it wasn't bad at all. Probably the area has a lot to do with it.

Seekr, you look SMASHING (!!!) and the ink totally suits you.  :o)

Weeble

In college the guys wanted to get our social club tattoed on our ankles,  I missed the trip.  In Atlanta the young married guys wanted to get their wives names tattoed under our wedding rings, and I missed that trip as well.

Pain is not my thing! If you want one have at it but I like my "canvas" plain!

I love a guy with a pierced ear -- add longish hair and tidy facial hair and you got a good lookin' dude, imo.  My hubby refuses to the piercing but he's got the hair goin' on.  Yummy!

Now tattoos.... how 'bout those?  I personally like those too, male or female, depending on placement and content...

I am growing my hair out and my wife loves it.  (reminds her of the 70's when we were young) I am not in any mid life crisis.  Just wanted to try it.  Pony tail is coming along.

In the old days,   a man with a pierced ear was either:

a.  Wearing a pirate costume; or
b.  "funny"

depending on which ear (and I don't recall which was which.)

I'm neither.

Must we steriotype everyone we meet, must everyone wearing an earing be homosexual must everyone wearing a veil or of asain origin be a terrosist must everyone with an Irish accent be a traveelor and drunk must all black people be criminals of course not for none of them are these things of course there are people that are but the majority are not.

i personnally would not wear an earing for no other reason other that i don't see the sense of paying someone to stick pieces of metal in to your body yet i have no problem with other people wearing them its their life their choice is it not

I wouldn't it just not what Christ would have done.  I've had them in the past. All over.

I will let my conscience be my guide.  FIrst I will pierce my lips and ears and then run chains down to my nipples followed by chain down to my X so that when I am in a car wreck during a new moon in the middle of the country, the emergency crew can follow the chains to put in a trach tube and a catheter.  Mine will be for expediency, not adornement.

memmy

zoo, you shoulda written that on halloween, sounds like a movie.  ::pondering::

seekr, my cousin has many deep seeded problems, and is very hard to communicate with, due to deep pains from her past. She keeps herself pretty self medicated because of them, I believe. She is 60 now and married a 30 year old who loves to party and spout off words to shock others. They are a real sad story IMO, and not due to the tattoos, but from what comes from deep down inside.

I truly believe she does this to cover up some issues she has never dealt with, but I'm no psychologist either though.  ::frown::

And in that spot probably the rosebud will never continue to bloom. Hah.

I would date a Christian man who has an earring just as long it is small like a stud and he's not a sissy and as long as he does not wear it in the assembly of the Lord's house.

But you have misunderstood what the Lord's house is. We are now God's building and any time we get together for anything we are assembling. WE are His church.

Should that have been worded assembly of believers  instead of Lord's house::tippinghat::

I'm still reading these, I'm on page 3, but don't have time to read them all before I post. I'm making chili for some friends tonight and I've been here longer than I should have been.

My take on piercings and tattoos has to do with one's self-control. To make lifelong choices that will not be followed with regret sometime later.
I believe regret (along with jealousy and anger) are the ugliest feelings we experience and it's our choices we make that determines if we have to deal with those feelings.

seekr

I am sorry but that is a strange response. I couldn't help myself when I went to get a tattoo?? I know I won't regret it. I love it and it isn't a point of sin or shame and never will be. Regret is about things we do that hurt others, since love is the law.

seekr

kalen

Yeah, I thought it an odd response too.  I had great self-control when I got my tattoo:  I wasn't intoxicated, I wasn't on an emotional rollercoaster of some sort -- in fact, I thought about the decision for months and prayed over what my design should be.  Maybe I thought too much about it?  lol  I also have great self-control in considering getting my nose pierced and/or a second tattoo -- it's taken me months to decide, weighing the pros and cons.

And as a general rule, I don't live a life of regret.  There's simply no point in looking back at "what could have/should have been".  Seekr, you make a good point about true regret (what I call remorse, really), that it is born from hurting others.  My tattoo affects no one but me and my husband (who is completely impartial to it).

But perhaps msbradly speaks for herself -- some peolpe would regret getting a tattoo.  It's just not their thang.

coffeesucker

Certainly there are folks who get tattoos on a whim - usually a giddy, maybe intoxicated whim, but one nonetheless.
But from the hundreds of people I know and others I have talked to and read about, most folks get tattoos to signify something meaningful in their lives. I have three Chinese characters on my arm - they represent "strength," "loyalty," and "honor." It took me many YEARS of contemplation before I got the first one - "loyalty" - and I don't regret being patient about it. These characters are reminders to me of what type of man I should be with my family, with my friends, and with my God.

Most things that are done w/o self-control are mistakes. But getting a tattoo or a piercing is something that should be prayerfully and carefully planned out.
Peace!

I recently met a man (maybe 40 years old) who had his eyelids pierced with these heavy steel hooks.   ::help::  Looks positively scary.

Personally, I'm not all that crazy about pain to deliberately cause pain by having unnecessary holes poked in myself. ::eek::

Mind you, you're not the first brave lady to get her first tattoo in her 50s...
