Oh yeah, I forgot to say that the year that Fantasia won, I predicted Jennifer Hudson would win.  She got better every week and then wasn't voted through.

That was the year everyone thought it was rigged.

Oh well, I guess Golden Globes and Oscar nominations are better than an American Idol record.

Phil Wilson

I have become a huge Chris Sligh fan. I talked about him on my blog today, but he calls himself a Christ follower on his blog and is a worship leader.

His band also just had a video "leaked," and I think the song is pretty great. You can see it here. I would almost be tempted to vote for him.

OldDad

Looks like the AI people have made him take the content off his blog.  I saw it earlier today and it was pretty cool.

Phil Wilson

Yep, but the Google Cache got it and it can still be read here.

Dontcha love technology.

Weeble

Here is a web site with some of Chris Slighs music. I hope that he gets better on AI

WOW!  I loved his audition -- but sheesh!  He kicks booTAY!

OldDad

Whew... Very tough opening night.  Until tomorrow night, I remain convinced that the women are more talented.  Here's my list from top to bottom...

#1 Phil Stacey – hard start, I thought, "Oh no, he's dying up there,

Weeble

OD,

I basically agree but in my house we called it a tie between Blake and Phil.  My jaw hit the floor when he actually started singing, I had no idea!

Has Sanjaya ever watched the show?  The only one to be able to pull off a Stevie Wonder Song and not get ripped apart was Elliott Yamin. And his was iffy.

And Chris Sligh lost major points with me.  He is supposed to be a worship minister and some of the comments that he makes turns my stomach. He could be funny without being demeaning to others. He reminds me of a preacher who I used to work with, that would stand in the pulpit on Sunday and preach that our speech be pure and then tell some of the nastiest jokes on Monday in the office.

(I know some people are going to get their panties all twisted because it comes across as I am judging him, so let me reassure you that I am. Anyone who claims to be intimate with God ought to live the same kind of life Jesus lived.  1 John 2:6 The Message)

kalen

I liked both Chris's and the black guy (can't remember his name) even if he did sing Michael Jackson... but really, none of them "wowed" me.  I'm lookin' forward to the ladies tonight (followed by LOST --  Woot!)

OldDad

Interesting buzz today is that A. J. Tabaldo might be going home because a lack of "face time" during the auditions didn't give him a chance to build a fan base.

cab1974

A.J. was in my bottom 3 or 4 anyway.  There are at least 6 that they could dump Thursday night, shorten the competition and I wouldn't mind a bit.

Big Mike Lewis

I was shocked at who they liked and didn't like.

Blake Lewis was horrible and they liked him.

Chris Sligh was great and they said he was "okay".

Bon Voyage

Chris Sligh is a Baptist.

Evil.

Arkstfan

I thought Sligh was a real jerk. No way that comeback was "off-the-cuff" and he tried to use it a  couple times before anyone was even listening to him.

He's got a show me a bunch before I'll dream of voting for him.

They could cut about 8 of the guys and improve the competition.

Bon Voyage

What was Sligh's comeback?  I was working and missed it.

OldDad

For me, it was confirmed... The women are far and away more talented than the men.

From top to bottom:

#1 LaKisha Johes – no question, off the charts performance.  Hers was THE breakout performance of both nights.

2. Melinda Doolittle – one of my early favs, did a super job.  Her humility is refreshing.

3. Stephanie Edwards – "First up

He threw off on two of Simon's projects, the singers known as Il Divo, and the Teletubbies childrens show.

The judges were right, BTW, Sligh was definitely middle-of-the-pack in a terrible night for the guys.

Big Mike Lewis

I might have to change my winner to LaKisha.  I still like Chris for the guys, but winner is LaKisha.

She was like 100x better than anyone else in the competition tonight.  She IS definitely in another league!

It's funny when you hear them play back the performances and you hear those mousy female voices and then LaKisha sang.  It was like karaoke night...Disney...then BAM!!! YOU'RE GONNA LOOOOOVE MEEEEEEE!!!!

ConnieLard

I agree.  Don't see how any of the others can even begin to keep up with Lakisha.  She is head and shoulders above the rest! ::clappingoverhead::

Jimbob

Well, we missed the first hour of the women's show last night, but saw all that mattered.  Doolittle & Lakisha just blew the doors off.  We haven't even seen the guy's yet, still waitin' on the tivo.  I've gotta be honest, after those two, watching the guys seems perfunctory.

Jimbob

Doolittle's was an example of good song choice.  She flat owned that song.

kalen

She DID, didn't she?  Same with Lakesha -- both of those women, despite what happens in this competition, have MAJOR careers ahead of 'em.

Arkstfan

Chris Sligh thinks he is the Taylor Hicks of this crowd, that he can win on humor. But early on Taylor was deferential to the judges, he wasn't so unconcerned until he built a fan base.

Speaking of Hicks. The guys apparently learned NOTHING from his run last year. You get three weeks to pick the songs you want to get to the final 12. This is where you pick rip-roaring FUN songs that people at home will be singing along to. Give people a good time these three weeks and you can go into the final 12 with a fan base. Building a base of fans willing to call for you is what it is all about now. You no longer need to impress the judges (except possibly Simon because he does seem to carry a decent amount of voter influence) you need fans.

Tuesday night the guys were bland and boring in their song choices and did not seem to be having fun.

OldDad

Dial Idol - 87% accurate last season, and has accurately predicted the overall winner every time! - has Aliana Alexander and Amy Krebs at the bottom of the women's list, and Paul Kim and Nicholas Pedro at the bottom of the men's.

From their data, it's looking like Sundance and Antonella are picking up the "vote for the worst" voters.

Yeah, but I just don't have a lot of use for those statistics, or even really the opinions of others watching the show.  It was once said that "reviews tell us much more about the reviewer than whatever it is they're reviewing" -- and really websites (even this GCM forum) are types of "reviews", don't 'cha think?

Sure, they're "just as entitled to their opinions as anyone else.  But they publish their opinions in an attempt to persuade us to [like] or not [to like], view or skip."

I guess I'm glad I watched and enjoyed the AI episodes before I knew who I was or wasn't supposed to care much for.

But, hey, different strokes...

You are absolutely right.

Hurts my feelings a little though, that I didn't even get a teeny bit of the "enjoy your writing style" type love I tried to throw to someone else before they got their drawers all balled up...

::whistle::

kalen

LOL!  You poor, poor thing.....  Well, if it's any consolation, your writing style is somewhat enjoyable (especially when you can get as well as you give) -- now un-wind those drawers of yours.  There's no point in havin' 'em all balled up like that, it's uncomfortable!

I love ya Old Dad!  :o)

OldDad

Right back atcha, you shiny happy person you!

segell

Wait until the handlers (dressers, makeup and hair people) get hold of Lakesha!!  She's flat out the bomb.  And as Simon wanted to say last night, the others might as well book 23 flights....however.....what will the voters think?

Also, apart from the guy that did the boom box thing, I wasn't impressed with any of the guys, frankly.  And he did not match well with three or four of the women last evening.  I think this is really going to be the women's year (read that Lakesha for my money's worth).

Well, she is from Michigan.   ::crackup::

I was a little surprised that Rudy and Nicole went home.

I don't believe anyone said that she was absolutely perfect Gary.  ::whistle::

She is my pick as well though.

Ya never know though, sometimes the whole thing can get turned around with a slight twist or so.

Nicole was horrible.

Well, I wouldn't go quite that far - I thought she had potential.  Antonella and Alaina were worse than Nicole.

Jimbob

Yeah, her performance was a bit odd.  I agree, OD, that Antonella's was worse.  Painful, in fact.
