Roman,

I don't have 10, but I would add a few to your list:

1.  Young Frankenstein
2.  Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Regarding Ace Ventura - I think it was totally crude.  However, when it came out on video, both my parents were very sick in the hospital.  We thought my father would pass away, but he recovered.  Unfortunately, my mother did not.

They were hospitalized for over 3 weeks, and my brother and sister were here during the long ordeal.  One evening we found ourselves at home, taking a break from visiting the hospital, and decided to rent Ace Ventura.  I've never seen a household of people laugh so much at a movie - we had tears in our eyes we laughed so much.

It must have been the stress relief and the opportunity to escape for awhile that did it.

Now, if I see any of that movie, I'm reminded of how it helped us during a very sad time, and remember it somewhat fondly (except for the crudeness!).

Grumpy Old Men
The God's Must Be Crazy
A Fish Called Wanda
Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai
Monty Python and ........(Pick One)

I'll think of more later.

I understand Jerry Brooke's concern for me choosing Mystery Men, but I was and am still largely a comic book fan. There were a ton of "insider" jokes that had me rolling.

I would like to add

Meet the Parents
Armegeddon
Highlander II

to my list of honorable mentions of greatest comedies of all time.

Lee Freeman

Add Kevin Costner's Robin Hood to the top ten comedies of all time. I like him, but NOT in this...

My first favorite comedy was a 1986 movie called Real Genius. It starred Val Kilmer and was about a nerdy 16 year old science genius who goes to Pacifica College and is placed by the science professor on a project to develop the technology for building a superlaser. Val Kilmer played Chris Knight, a senior about to graduate, the project's leader, himself the smartest student at the school and a former nerd, who's now a popular ladies' man close to partying himself out of school. Unbeknownst to them, their professor, Dr. Jerry Hathaway, is having them develop the superlaser as a superweapon for the US Government.

Aided by several other science nerds from the school and a guy named Lazlo Hollyfeld, the smartest student ever to attend Pacifica College, who "cracked under the pressure" and now lives in the steam tunnels underneath the school, where he also has a high-tech computer lab, they sabotage the laser and get even with Dr. Hathaway.

I love the part where they they put a tiny speaker in the braces of Hathaway's obnoxious grad student, Kent, and convince him that God is speaking to him.

My second favorite comdey is the 1990 film Three O'Clock High, for which Tangerine Dream did the soundtrack. It's about a straight-A senior named Jerry Mitchell who accidentally touches the school's new transfer student, a tough guy named Buddy Revell, "who killed a guy at his last school," and as a result is challenged by Revell to fight him at 3:00 after school. The film's all about Jerry's attempts to get out of the fight.

"She turned me into a newt once! ... I got better."  :D

Pax vobiscum.

Roman

8. Splash

10. The Princess Bride

honorable mentions -
Waterworld
Independence Day

You've got to be kidding me.  Mystery Men?  If you want a movie with Paul Reubens in it that is funny, try Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

Son of a Preacher Man

This question deserves the utmost respect and honor.  I shall ponder this matter and get back to the board after giving it all due consideration.  However, there is but one number one comedy of all time...

Blazing Saddles[/i]

Many elements were factored into this decision.  First, it is a comedy that has stood the test of time--it is just as funny today as it was when it came out.  Second, on the surface it appears a trifle of a film but the subtext is racism and it dared to tackle the issue head-on when most folks were still denying it was even an issue.  Third, I'm workin' for Mel Brooks!

Raunchy?  Yes.  Poignant?  You bet.  Laugh from start to finish?  Every time.

The remaining nine must wait for the envelope.

Hi,

As much as I hate to admit it I find Ruthless People to be the funniest movie ever, but now I find parts of it offends my sensibilities (nudity, language, etc.).

Jim Abb

Like others I'll need a little time to reflect, but I definitely agree with the two Mel Brooks choices of Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein (Bleucher! neghhhhhhhhhh) and would add The Producers as well.
Couple from Woody Allen.... Sleeper and Annie Hall.
Dream Team is a family favourite.
Roxanne with Steve Martin.
Caddyshack and Animal House (some great moments amid the crudity).
Then there are a few classics that are great for smiles, but not belly laughs....A Night at The Opera, His Girl Friday, Arsenic and Old Lace, You Can't Take it With You
More recent faves...Home Alone I and II (Pesci and Stern are two of the greatest put upon bunglers in screen history)...any scene with John Candy or Chris Farley (the whole movies may not have always been good, but those two are among the best scene stealers ever!)
I would also agree with the Monty Python choices and Grumpy Old Men
Another recent one with Mathau was Dennis the Menace..Mathau as the put-upon Mr. Wilson is classic.
OK....now I want ot go watch one
:p
