It is not "man bashing" to discuss abuse by some Christian husbands to their wives. It is addressing an issue that has been swept under the rug for decades. We can keep sticking our heads in the sand and pretend it doesn't exist, or we can courageously address the issues and come together to find causes and solutions.

Who ever said that we shouldn't try to address the situation?

I just figure a good dose of teaching  those young men to love their wives as Christ loved the church -- and mentoring them to show them how it looks in action -- will head off some of the problem.

Some of it, however, will never be squelched, so long as evil-sick people who want to live that way seek to draw the like-minded to their powerbases.  That goes for any sort of powerbase built upon any sort of corruption of God's ways.

So, even if you could wave a magic... um... Even if you could get a songleader to wave a magic pitchpipe and get the true Word out to all, somehow, there would still be those who refuse it, and there will still be a need for the picking-up-afterwards methods of shelters and crisis hotlines.

If the bad teaching is as prevalent as Phoebe suggests, what do we do about it?

Except on the net, where I read a lot of weird stuff, I have never heard the kind of preaching Phoebe describes.  If I don't even hear it, how can I combat it?

It only breaks for an abused woman.  An abused man must take the abuse.

Why should he?  No one "must" take abuse.

I was trying to elevate man bashing to the discussion.   It seemed one sided.  I am not sure where the 9 out of 10 times it is a woman being abused statistic comes from (physical beatings definitely) but if abuse is defined beyond the physical, it happens way too much to men too and there seems to be little done about it or resources available.

Zoo, You aren't allowed to bring a different point of view into this thread.  Phoebe doesn't like it!  :)

what do we do about it?

I teach my sons that women are equals and co-inheritors of the grace of God.

I do it by showing them the example of two adults who view each other as equal partners in a marriage where both are submissive to the other out of Christian love.

It's a place to start.

I agree!  I'd also still like to know what Phoebe thinks we ought to do about these horrid preachers she describes.  If there is nothing we can do about them, why are we talking about them?

How can we pray against their evil if we never see such a dude and don't know they exist?  it pays to say something about them.
