The explanation is simply that we hear what we want to hear.  "Stairway to Heaven" is a good example--There are probably 20 versions of what the message is supposed to be.

My point is that what you're saying is impossible without supernatural influence.  It's absolutely silly to suggest that something can be intentionally done to make sense forward and backward.

Again, google and separate the wheat from the chaff.  I don't have time now and likely won't for a while. Just use common sense.
Last fall on another forum, someone brought up the old backmasking thing... (I thought that idea had died in the '70's, yeah, that whole backmasking idea was flying around back when I was a teen too!)
If you dare, check out this page on YouTube You can listen to it backwards.  Try doing it without looking at the supposed backwards lyrics and see what you hear.  If you look at the supposed lyrics, and you really try, you might hear something, but I doubt you can hear those words without having it fed to you.

That being said, I have heard that the writer of the song said the song is really meaningless and 'wrote itself'... I have no doubt there could be demonic influences involved.

What do you think of this one.   It's a real doozie.  The guy lives a sinful life and ends up going to heaven.  Go figure.

Deathbed
I can smell the death on the sheets
Covering me
I can't believe
This is the end

But this is my deathbed
I lie here alone
If I close my eyes tonight
I know I'll be home

The year was nineteen forty one
I was _eight years old and far far too young
To know that the stories
Of battles and glory
Was a tale a kind mother made up for her son

You see, Dad was a traveling preacher
Teaching the words of The Teacher
But Mother had sworn
He went off to the war
And died there with honor somewhere on a beach there
But he left once to never return
Which taught me that I should unlearn
Whatever I thought a father should be
I abandoned that thought like he abandoned me

By '47 I was fourteen
I'd acquired a taste for liquor and nicotine
I smoked until
I threw up yet I still
Lit em' up for thirty more years like a machine
So right there you have it
That one filthy habit
Is what got me where I am today

I can smell the death on the sheets
Covering me
I can't believe
This is the end

I can hear those sad memories
Still haunting me
So many things
I'd do again

But this is my deathbed
I lie here alone
If I close my eyes tonight
I know I'll be home

Got married on my twenty first
8 months before my wife would give birth
Its easier to be sure you love someone
When her father inquires with the barrel of a gun
The union was far from harmonious
No two people could have been more alone than us
The years would go by and she'd love someone else
And I'd realized I hadn't been loved yet myself

From there its your typical spiel
Yeah if life was a highway I was drunk at the wheel
I was helping the lose ends all fall apart
Yeah I swear I was destined to fail and fail from the start

I bowled about 6 times a week
The bottle of Beam kept the memories from me
Our marriage had taken a 7 ten split
And along with my pride the ex-wife took the kids

I was so scared of Jesus
But he sought me out
Like the cancer in my lungs that is killing me now
And I've given up hope
On the days I have left
But I cling to the hope
Of my life in the next

Then Jesus showed up
Said "Before we go up
I thought we might reminisce
See one night in your life
When you turned out the lights
You asked for and prayed for my forgiveness

You cried, wolf
The tears they soaked your fur
The blood dripped from your fangs
You said 'What have I done?'
You loved that lamb
With every sinful bone
And there you wept alone
Your heart was so contrite
You said 'Jesus please forgive me of my crimes
Sanctify this withered heart of mine
Stay with me until my life is through
And on that day, please take me home with you'"

I can smell the death on the sheets
Covering me
I can't believe
This is the end

I can hear you whisper to me
Its time to leave
You'll never be
Lonely again

But this was my deathbed
I died there alone
When I closed my eyes tonight
You carried me home

I am the way
Follow me and take my hand
And I am the truth
Embrace me and you'll understand
I am the life
Through me you'll live again
For I am love
I am love
I am love

I think the lyrics are beautifully poignant.

:)  I love ya brother...  I also love that song.  I think it's something like 11 minutes long.
Matt Thiessen sings the part of the dying man.  Jon Foreman sings the part of Jesus at the end.
It's on an album called five score and seven years ago

I don't listen to most of the bands you've quoted in this thread.
Do you really expect secular bands to have wholesome lyrics?
If you want to get some good material for bashing "Christian" bands, try reading Body Piercing Saved My Life.  I haven't read it yet, but apparently a guy from Rolling Stone Magazine went on a mission to try to dig up some dirt on different musicians who were targeting Christian audiences.  He got them to admit to stuff under false pretenses.
It's full of dirt... like Amy Grant sunbathes in the nude.   And some musicians do drugs etc, etc...
Okay maybe it would have been better to put this on the Christian Rock thread.
But I was just quoting lyrics.   Isn't what this thread is about!

The dirty secret is most of Christian rock isn't very aesthetically pleasing.

Yeah, I Seem to have read that somewhere before.
I did read somewhere that you like a Canadian band called Downhere.
If you gave me sometime, I could probably come up with some other stuff you'd like.
There are some good bands that you wouldn't have to worry about the influence of the lyrics on your kids, that is, if you have any.

I have kids. They are little.  When they are in the car we listen to one of the Christian stations.

I just believe some of the artists shouldn't be allowed on the radio as they can't sing and the songs aren't too good.  What if Cartoons got saved, etc.

Imabear

Yeah, That cartoon song is only for when your in a really silly mood.  It could get very annoying!

Don't you like Audio Adrenaline or Jars of Clay, at least some of their stuff?

I saw Audio Adrenaline in Concert with MercyMe in NYC last year, (before AA called it quits)  It was fantastic.

I can see you being very annoyed by groups like Hawk Nelson, and Eleventy Seven.

I like Seventh Day Slumber and some of the newer Skillet stuff, but then again, I'm old enough to be your mama... and I'm female, so that probably has some influence on our different tastes.

Sorry Charles for hijacking your thread... but it's really Gary's fault now. ;)

This thread is not about "unwholesome lyrics", but blasphemy (see the title of the thread). Even so, considering the fact that most secular songs have unwholesome and/or blasphemous lyrics, the question then arises: should Christians listen to such music?

Charles Sloan

What kind of music are you talking about?

She's talking about music that Gary says is not aesthetically pleasing.

I agree with her.  We as parents can and should have be aware of the lyrics of the music that our kids and their friends listen to. What is the message they are getting?

My daughter plays guitar and is passionate about it.  I love that the music she chooses to sing/play is music that is positive and uplifting.  Of course as a teen she also likes to listen to stuff just for fun too.  Fortunately many Christian artists have a mix of music.  Not all of their songs praise and worship songs, but for the most part they reflect the values I want to instill in her.  :)

I do think we need to be aware of what subtle, and not so subtle messages we are feeding into our subconscious.  I know peeps who say they are just listening to the music, not the lyrics.  I'd rather not be judgemental.  I know I've listened to aesthetically pleasing music that had a message contrary to what I believe.  I still do on occasion.
It just reinforces for me how lost the world is.

We were meant to live for so much more.
We want more than this world's got to offer.
Everything inside screams for second life.
~ Jon Foreman~
Sorry, I got distracted even though it's not a particularly aesthetially pleasing song.
It's on the radio now.
