"Torches blazed and sacred chants were praised: As they start to cry hands held to the sky: In the night the fires burning bright: The ritual has begun Satan's work is done... But I feel drawn towards the evil chanting hordes: They seem to mesmerise me: can't avoid their eyes: 666 the number of the beast: 666 the one for you and me"

~Iron Maiden claims the mark for them and their fans in - The Number Of The Beast

"Father Lucifer: You never looked so sane: You always did prefer the drizzle to the rain: Tell me that you're still in love with that Milkmaid: How's the Lizzies: How's your Jesus christ been hanging"

~Tori Amos admits her father is the devil and blasphemes the Lord in - Father Lucifer

Tori Amos' father is an Episcopal priest.  Hopefully, he didn't take the 'Father Lucifer' reference personally.

"Rock has always been the devils music. . . I believe rock and roll is dangerous . . . I feel we're only heralding something even darker than ourselves."

~David Bowie - Rolling Stone, Feb. 12, 1976

When I say Rhythm is a Dancer.

Truly dreadful lyrics.

"I'm the devil's advocate. We have our own worshippers who are called 'groupies.' Girls will give their bodies to musicians as you would give a sacrifice to a god."

~Frank Zappa - What About Christian Rock

"The energy of devils and angels is the same energy; it's how you use it. It's fuel. There is a saying: If you scare all your devils away, the angels will go away with them. You know, the halo and the horns are the same thing. I mean it's OK to be spiritually horny - that's what creative genius is all about. Geniuses don't have time to think about how it's going to be received... they don't have time to think whether people like it or not, is it morally right, will God like it?"

~Carlos Santana admits to being controlled by demons, and having no concern for morality or God - Rolling Stone, magazine, March 16, 2000, p. 87.

Nice.

Oh, thanks for reminding me of 'When I Look at the World'.  That's one of my favorites, but it's like 10th or 11th on the 'All That You Can't Leave Behind' cd, so if I'm driving a short distance, I don't make it to that song.  I'll start with that one today on the way home.  Beautiful song.

This thread is quite useful.  It's reminded me of two good songs I haven't listened to in a long time.

CSloan

"Get them while they're young and bend their minds."

~Spencer Dryden of the rock group - Jefferson Starship

James Rondon

"Get stoned and worship Satan."

"I can explain everything better though music. You hypnotize people to where they go right back to their natural state, and when you get people at their weakest point, you can preach into their subconscious what we want to say."

James Rondon

"You say you found Jesus Christ
He's the only one
You say you found Buddha
Sitting in the sun
You say you found Mohammed
Facing to the east
You say you found Krishna
Dancing in the seats

Ain't nobody gonna do it for you
Well you may believe in devils
and you may believe in lords
But Christ, you're gonna have to serve yourself and that's all there is to it
You got to serve yourself
Ain't nobody gonna do it for you
You gotta serve yourself
Nobody's gonna do it for you"

Did you actually bother to read all the lyrics of that song?  It is somewhat like quoting scripture out of context, or broadcasting only a snippet of someone's speech - you can make it sound like they're saying the opposite of their real message.  Here is the song in full - especially note the ending.
QuoteWhen you look at the world
What is it that you see
People find all kinds of things
That bring them to their knees

I see an expression
So clear and so true
That changes the atmosphere
When you walk to the room

So I try to be like you
Try to feel it like you do
But without you it's no use
I can't see what you see
When I look at the world

When the night is someone else's
And you're trying to get some sleep
When your thoughts are too expensive
To ever want to keep

When there's all kinds of chaos
And everyone is walking lame
You don't even blink now do you
Don't even look away

So I try to be like you
Try to feel it like you do
But without you it's no use
I can't see what you see
When I look at the world

I can't wait any longer
I can't wait 'til I'm stronger
Can't wait any longer
To see what you see
When I look at the world

I'm in the waiting room
I can't see for the smoke
I think of you and your holy book
When the rest of us choke

Tell me, tell me
What do you see
Tell me, tell me
What's wrong with me

This is not reviling God or the Bible.  These are the words of someone who recognizes that the Christian ("you" in the lyrics) has an insight or understanding that he lacks.

This, CSloan, is an example of what irritates people about this thread.  You are apparently not checking into the claims you make when you post these little clips of song lyrics.  Are you just copying and pasting from a web site, or are you looking up these lyrics yourself?

QuoteI was there when they crucified my lord
I held the scabbard when the soldier drew his sword
I threw the dice when they pierced his side
But Ive seen love conquer the great divide

U2 w/BB King

The song originally featured an additional verse:

QuoteWhen I woke up I was sleeping on the street
I felt the world was dancing, and I was dirt beneath their feet
When I woke up I saw the Devil looking down
But my Lord He played guitar the day love came to town

Could the same be said for all of the quotes on this thread?

I think "what irritates people about this thread" is the fact that many of them listen to worldly music, including many of the artists that have been listed, and they are being convicted by the Spirit of God as a result (cf. Psa. 101:3, not just limited to "eyes").

marc

Then you would be wrong about that.

James Rondon

Since you cannot speak for the many which I wrote about, I stand by my statement.

Nevertheless

QuoteCould the same be said for all of the quotes on this thread?

I really have no idea.  I simply googled the song title because CSloan's statement about it didn't ring true.  That is not the point.  Others have already told him he was misinterpreting some of the songs, and I think if he actually read this one before posting the snippet he did, then it had to have been done purposefully.  I don't think CSloan would do that, which is why I asked if he was just copying and pasting from some web site he found.

In some cases that's probably true.  You (that's a collective you) have said that it's important to expose evil.  I would agree with that.  However, evil must be exposed by truth, not lies, innuendos, or fabrications.

[I cite CSloan here because he started this thread and is the primary poster, but I include all who support what he's doing.]
CSloan must be held to the highest level of integrity in this, or he simply appears to be a hypocrite, or at least a simpleton.  This does not reflect well on our Lord.

James Rondon

May we all be held to the highest level of integrity in all things. May we do nothing out of partiality, or selfish motives. All that we do reflects upon our Lord... May it reflect well.

Jimbob

I don't listen to any of these.  So.....the only way the lyrics would be in my head would be via the thread here.  Ironic, ain't it?

Nevertheless

James Rondon

The same thing happens when false doctrines are exposed. You may not believe or teach such things, and whatever the teaching is may not be something that you even think upon, but when they are exposed, and when they are brought to your attention, they're (in such a sense) in your head...

But when you "expose" false doctrines, and it turns out your "exposing" was incorrect, it puts egg on all our faces.

Bon Voyage

I certainly believe there is evil in some secular music.  However, some of this thread reminds me of being in "Language Arts" class in high school and being asked to look at a poem that is 3 stanzas long and write a full page on what the author was trying to convey, and every single person in the class wrote something different.

I don't know of one quote that I have put up, here, that would qualify for such a comparison.

The last verse of "When I Look at the Word" concludes with a rejection of God and his holy book. I'm not going to get into a exegesis of U2 lyrics, if you disagree thats fine; I feel its pretty clear.

It's not shameful to have a dirty face, but refusing to wash is childish.

You are tossing about accusations of blasphemy.  Do you even care if what you're saying is true?

What I see in these songs is clearly blasphemous, to contrive their meanings into something else would be disingenuous and hypocritical.

Which is why I don't hand out print-outs of false doctrines to the church every week.
