"The only ultimate disaster that can befall us, I have come to realize, is to feel ourselves to be home on earth. As long as we are aliens, we cannot forget our true homeland.

Unhappiness on earth cultivates a hunger for heaven. By gracing us with a deep dissatisfaction, God holds our attention. The only tragedy, then, is to be satisfied prematurely. To settle for earth. To be content in a strange land....

We are not happy here because we are not at home here. We are not happy here because we are not supposed to be happy here. We are "like foreigners and strangers in this world

This is sort of my point of living in the image of God - it really is more natural. I would disagree with Max in that I don't know that we need to yearn for Heaven to be in our element. We were made human, not as outcasts, but as creations of God. We were intended to live in that Image, and in that Image is our element - even if we're human.

I don't see how anyone who has a home in heaven can be happy on this sin-cursed, hate-filled, God-rejecting world. "This world is not my home; I'm just a-passing through. My treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue."

true this is a temporary stop for some, i say some becuase there will be a new heaven and earth, some will be in heaven (a remnant) and many will be on earth in the new Jerlusalam with God. The meek shall inherit the earth. and I saw a new Jerlusalam coming down from heaven. it goes on to say God himself will be in the new city.

but regardless, God did create this world for us, for our enjoyement, for us to be fruitful and multiply and subdue the entire world. So I think He means for us to enjoy it while we are passing thru, but i do get the point you are making and agree.
