Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
(Hebrews 11:1 NASB)

This is not so much a definition of faith as it is an explanation of one of faith's functions in the believer's life.  Faith is what we have now in place of what we hope for and it is what we have in place of the things we can not (or did not) see.

We cannot see God, but faith demonstrates His existence.  We did not see the Creation, or Abraham or David, but faith convicts us of all of these.
