This movie came out in late 2007.  One day, back in December, my daughter announced that she wanted to see it.  I checked online, fortunately it wasn't playing in any local theaters.  I ran into someone at work reading the book.  She said she didn't think based on the content in the book, that it would be appropriate for kids.  I was quite relieved that it wasn't being shown locally.
Then this morning, I saw it at a local dvd rental/vending machine.  I figured for a dollar, we could check it out, and on a small screen, knowing beforehand what the objectionable scenes would be, so we could divert the eyes and discuss things as necessary as we watched it.

The movie is almost entirely in the Afghan language, with subtitles.  There are some very disturbing scenes.  A young boy is sodomised by a bully, although, it's done in a way that one knows what is happening, without actually seeing much.  An adulteress is stoned to death by the Taliban during the half time of a soccer game.  There is other violence and foul language.
Overall, I think it is a very well done film.  It is NOT appropriate for children.  I think it possibly should have been rated R and not PG-13.  I am glad we didn't see it in the theater, because of the intensity of some of the scenes.
