It seems to me that a lot of TV stations are going somewhat "over the top" in presenting local news.  One station here in Michigan, i.e., starts its local news at 4:00 p.m. and goes all the way to 6:30 p.m., when it switches to a half hour of national news.  That amounts to three solid hours of news.  I wonder just how much real diversity of coverage you can manage with that long a period of coverage.  What do you think?

Channel 3 starts at 5 pm and goes to 6:30.  In that time, John Marra, who was our extension agent back when I was in 4H,  can tell you everything he knows about cicadas.  It isn't as much as you might expect.

Our CBS affiliate gives the local news at 5PM, shows an episode of Andy Griffith at 5:30, and returns to recap and update local events at 6, leading into the network news at 6:30.

The station that gives you 2-1/2 hours of local news ahjead of the national is the ABC affiliate, Channel 12.  It seems to me that's just a wee bit over the top.

Do they give you 2 1/2 hours of news or 1/2 hour of news stretched over a 2 1/2 hour time period?

Probably somewhere in between.  There is a lot of repeat material.
