According to (Link deleted per rule 3.3), various studies have shown that parents and children do not spend enough time together inn activities that strengthen their relationships. In fact, a recent study showed that parents spend about three hours a day watching television with their children, while they spend less than 30 minutes with them in other activities.

Television can rob family members of important time together, and it can also prevent them from effectively communicating with each other.

Mr. J

A very close friend with seven children had trouble brewing in the family.  This included everything from disrespectful and problematic children at home to children joining in with the public school teachers in their effort to destroy families via the unlawful "law."

Then the TV went out the door.

All was not saved, it was too late to save the oldest from worldliness.  However, the rest of the family (and even while the oldest was still living there) lived a much happier life as a FAMILY!  Attitudes changed tremendously in a matter of days/weeks.

I was witness to this and was very impressed with what good can come from the lack of such a bad influence in the home.  I was very surprised with how quickly the younger children turned back to being good kids.

I thnk TV is a great way to bond with parents.

I think you have the right attitude about this; and I would like to just encourage you to follow your convictions.

You are on the right track.

Be encouraged!

By the way, could you just imagine what difference it would make if people would spend as much time reading the Bible and worshipping God together as a family as they do watching television!

^ I second that.

If we all dedicated more time to Christ, the world would be a much happier place.

I used to play games with my mom all the time. As I got older, we did less of that stuff together, but we would always go places together. We don't have a lot of time, but we use what we have. We talk while we're out and about or in the car or whatever. I feel like I have a much stronger relationship with my mom than most teenagers.

Board games/card games are great.

I've noticed that when the kids are grounded from the internet, TV, and video games, they behave much better.

We even had TV off for a while....NO TV, except what we already had recorded, and could watch on a VCR or DVD player.  Didn't bother me, especially....

I probably need to re-think their access....

My husband and his ex wife didnt have a television, but did watch some videos and dvds. However the boys, now in their 20's just spend hours and hours playing computer games instead (many of them violent). To me I cant see that this is any better that watching television.
Also it didnt make the desire to watch it any less, as whenever they visited family, which was quite often, they spent all their time watching it anyway.

We have never subscribed to cable since we've had children.   Our single TV which is rarely watched broke about a month and a half ago and we just got it fixed.

It was during that time that I believe many of my temptations of lust were erased.  I think any man who is struggling with that issue really needs to think about taking a baseball bat to their TV for their own good.

This would be synonomous to what Christ suggested about "plucking out an eyeball to keep the whole body out of hell" (or at least a good start).

If you are serious about your walk with Christ you'll give it a serious look.... you should at least because it works.... at least if that is where your temptations lie.  The same could hold true with associations at work or internet browsing habits though.

I know a guy who didn't watch tv until he was 14. I actually envy his relationship with his parents.

He is nearly a chess grandmaster as well

*sigh* what could have been.

Do you think it helped the lust problem because of what you were watching? or was it just things like adverts etc which can be very low in moral standards, but difficult to aviod sometimes?

I used to drown away most of my free time with the TV until my eyes were opened.

To me, a TV is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Entertainment is supposed to be good, but in the case of the TV usually it's not. What we profess to believe and want to live out here on Earth, the TV is the opposite. On TV the shows are about glorifying prideful and spoiled children who try to manipulate their parents, fornication, homosexuality has gained a lot of popularity in the last 10 years, hate, lies and deceit. The Bible tells us to seek out what is pure, lovely, etc. Those things are not lovely, yet we are... wait for it.. entertained! I wonder if you would be entertained if a woman was having an abortion in front of you???

TV is a tool to numb away the disgusting reality of sin. If you see it all the time you become used to it, it is no longer shocking or serious. Just another day in the old tube...

TV is not an activity. It is sitting and staring at a box of moving pictures when you could be out living a REAL life not composed of actors and scripts.

TV is a tool that teaches us to lust after sin, possessions and unattainable lifestyles. It teaches us to want to live by a standard that is not a reality.

Personal story - I hadn't seen my mother in 4 years and when we were reunited all she wanted to do was sit in the hotel room and watch TV. She actually got mad at me when I tried to interrupt.  Just recently I was reunited with an Uncle I was once very close to - in fact, he was the man that led me to salvation- yet he too had succumbed to the temptation of TV. When I saw him two weeks again we didn't speak past the greeting and he sat motionless and disinterested and just watched TV far into the morning.

I am not again ALL TV, but seriously, when did TV become the center of everyone's life???????? And why are even Christians so blind to the influence it has on them????????
