the delete icon

I am confused about the delete icon.  I posted a post to a thread  then thought better of it and hit the delete icon thinking it wouldn't work anyway but it did.  My post disappeared--poof! 

I thought that we could only modify our posts and not outright delete them.  Could you please tell me what the law of the land is in regards to deleting posts?  On two occasions I was able to do this.  Other times I could only modify.

Michael,

After a certain amount of time you cannot delete it. You have about 6 hours to delete the post. After that you can only modify it and a message will show at the bottom of the post that you modified it.

Might I ask why we only have a certain amount of time to delete it?
