What about the case where  a christian leaves another christian (for non adultry cases) and the christian who was left remarrys.  I guess if they left there spouse maybe it could be argued that they were not a christian?  But lets assume they are would you have to ask for forgivness one time when you remarryed or would you have to ask for forgivness every single day in that new marriage?  We are kind of left in the dark on situations like this.

What if the christian who left did so for monetary reasons... she almost bankrupted the marriage financially and when she couldn't get any more money, she left and then let the courts force the husband to pay her more than they could have afforded financially... and was content with never divorcing (but living apart) with her husband being financially liable to support her for the rest of her life.

FYI, the above was me... I didn't sue for divorce until 6 years after she left and proceeded to move 800 miles away and told me point blank that all she ever wanted from me was money so she could live the life style she wanted for her and our children.

On a side note, our children are now in their 20's and rarely, if ever, talk to their mother anymore since they now know what she did.

I remarried 3 years after my divorce to the girl friend of my youth and have had the most wonderful marriage that I can imagine.. and to boot, both of my kids adore her.. along with my parents.

The bottom line is that God does not want us to divorce for any and all reasons... I believe he wants us to be happy and does not want us trapped in marriage hell for the rest of our lives.  Divorce is OK if it's for the right reasons.

tantor maybe in your case abandonment is the reason. not sure if she was a Christian but she certainly didnt act like one, so maybe abandonment by a non believer as the Bible allows for.

farouk

Scripture is the issue, not personal bad feelings.

Greetings in Christ from sunny Texas,

I would like to shed some light on this most difficult and painful subject. First and foremost--I am not divorced but have been happily married for almost 46 years to the same woman.

Now, having said that let me see if I can give you some information that you do not posses. if you have questions about this just ask.

[1] What is commonly known as the Traditional View of Marriage, Divorce and Remarriage is most Catholic in origin and is incorrect.

[2] Around 598-601 just prior to the development of the first Catholic Post with the Roman Army marching and conqueoring for the Roman Church--the question was asked:  it was--"Who has control over all these newly conqueored people--the church or the State?
[3] over the next 1,000 years the State lost and in the council of Trent in the early 1500's proclaimed that the church and not the statewon the control

Not to mention that King James specifically commanded the translators of his bible to adhere to Catholic/Anglican tradition when it comes to marriage and divorce.

Greetings in Christ from sunny Texas,

When we teach that Matt 19:9 teaches that the only reason for a divorce is Adultery--under the Mosaic law that is an outright untruth.
But it has been preached as such sinch the council of Trent--

[1] Under law--No divorce ever authorized for Adultery

[2] The Jewish terms for our word divorce are send away and bill of divorcement--and, it takes both to = our divorce.

In Malachi--God hates "putting away" not our word divorce--Not saying that God is pleased with divorce--just understand the text and how we misapply it

[3] Start learning how to study the scriptures by covenants and not by Testaments.

[4] Learn to ask the right questions in your studies. Questions like  Who, What, When, Where, Why and How and do so in the following situations ::reading::

[1] What it meant to the original hearers
[2] What it means to the original readers
[3] What it means to us today.

Matt 19:9 and all of the gospels up to the cross rightely belong to the old Mosaic Covenant.
The New Covenant did not begin with the birth of the Messiah but in Acts 2 following the life death, burial and resurrection of the Messiah.

Wasn't the Pharisees trying to trap Jesus as was usually the case in Matthew. They hoped to catch him going against the law of Moses but he answers, speaking of divorce ~ it was never meant to be from the beginning. He adds that it was allowed due to the hardness of their heart.

Bonnie, greetings in Christ from rainy Texas,

God authorized divorce for everything but one thing. And that one thing is adultery. Under the Mosaic law which no one lives under or is governed by today never authorized a divorce that is a sending away{greek00putting away} and the bill of divorcement.

And Yes, in Matt 19 they were remember what Jesus stated earlier on this subject in Matt 5 and were seeking to entrap Him and to make the people stop following Him.

The word 'pornea' as used by Jesus actually means more than adultery, and can mean many difrferent types of sexual immorality. If Jesus had only meant adultery, he would have used a different word.

farouk

The word was PORNEIA = fornication.

Adultery is another word.

My observation is this--I am pointing out that under the Mosaic law--there was no authorized divorce for adultery. The law authorized the adulterer to be stoned to death thus freeing the other partner to remarry. ::reading::
Keep in mind that the Jews also broke this law..But they did know what the law taught as evidenced in Matt 19.

I read an article yesterday about divorce and remarriage and the writer said it wasn't the greek word pornea that Jesus was using but another word with a smaller scope of meanings.

Maybe I can find that again for those interested in greek.

Have you noticed that neither Mark nor Luke record Jesus' words on divorce and remarriage the way that Matthew did?

I think the Bible is directed at all of us as Gods children. It is his letter to us after all.

Bonnie

According to an article I read Matthew was speaking to the Jews about the law of Moses whereas Luke and Mark weren't. Then again I don't put much stock in the writings of other people. I believe the Holy Ghost is our helper and guide in understanding the Word.

God Bless

Greetings in Christ from rainy Texas,

Here are the texts with the strong numbering system. Today only the numbers are strongs and thedefinitions come from some of the best scholars available
Mat 5:31  It(1161) hath been said,4483 Whosoever3739, 302 shall put away630 his848 wife,1135 let him give1325 her846 a writing of divorcement:647
Mat 5:32  But1161 I1473 say3004 unto you,5213 That3754 whosoever3739, 302 shall put away630 his848 wife,1135 saving for3924 the cause3056 of fornication,4202 causeth4160 her846 to commit adultery:3429 and2532 whosoever3739, 1437 shall marry1060 her that is divorced630 committeth adultery.3429

Mat 19:8  He saith3004 unto them,846 Moses3475 because4314 of the3588 hardness of your hearts4641, 5216 suffered2010 you5213 to put away630 your5216 wives:1135 but1161 from575 the beginning746 it was1096 not3756 so.3779
Mat 19:9  And1161 I say3004 unto you,5213 Whosoever3739, 302 shall put away630 his848 wife,1135 except1508 it be for1909 fornication,4202 and2532 shall marry1060 another,243 committeth adultery:3429 and2532 whoso marrieth1060 her which is put away630 doth commit adultery.3429

Consider what this text actually says--not what we have been to believe it says...

It does not say that when a man divorces his wife for adultery..It DOES says that when a man just puts away[that is casts out of his house, to abandon or to desert her--and not give her the bill of divorcement and then all involved remarry--all are guilty of adultery.  Why?  Because they have violated God's law on this Deut 24:1-4

Here, the issue is given to folks when there is not a biblical divorce.  If a man puts away his wife and gives her the bill of divorcement..BOTH ARE FREE TO REMARRY.
If the man does not give the bill of divorce--then all are guilty of adultery.

When a Jewish person by Jewish law puts away his wife and gives her the bill of divorcement--the law is not broken and neither party is guilty when they remarry.

The Jews consistently broke this law as they did all the other laws given to them by God through Moses.

Adultery is have sex with someone you are not married to at the time. For the woman that was punishable by law by stoning to death thus freeing the man to remarry.

A couple then and now who are lawfully divorced--do not commit adultery when they remarry.
However when a person has sex with someone they are not married to--that is adultery and today under the new covenant is forgivable--and, not a stoneable offense.
