Bon Voyage

beat ya by two minutes.

With my father-in-law's surround-sound system, we jumped out of our seats nearly every 5 minutes in the 2nd half of the movie. The fact that we turned all the lights off except for the TV did not help our heart rates any either. What a ride!

Son of a Preacher Man

Signs is one of only a handful of films I've seen twice in a theater.  I bought the DVD the day it came out and I've watched three times since then.

Shyamalan blends the intensity of Hitchcock with the story telling of Spielberg.  In my book, that makes him nothing short of genius.  I would also recommend The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, although Unbreakable didn't fair well at the box office.  I thought he rushed the ending on Unbreakable but the concept of the "the birth of a super hero" was wonderful to comic-geek like me.  {I also harbor hope that someday we will get a sequel to that one so we can see Bruce Willis and Samuel Jackson duke it out in comic book fashion.}

Mel Gibson is incredible in this movie as a minister who has lost his faith.  I empathized more with this character than I have with any other in a long, long time.  If not but for this one struggle, Christians everywhere should see this film.  Joaquin Phoenix is also in rare form and the children in the movie are very believable.  The story is very well written--solid plot, strong dialogue.  Night delivers visually, too.

Shyamalan's films are very decent.  He keeps the language in reasonable check without appearing to do "water-down" his movies.  They always deal with family and familial relationships.

I would not let my daughter watch them simply because they are all so intense and terrifying, but they are more than appropriate for young teens.  We'll let her watch them when she's a little bit older.

To say this film cracked my top 100 of all time is a safe bet. I give it my highest rating, which is: "Hot Date".  (Meaning, it's worth full-price admission for you and your girl.)

Nevertheless

Just finished watching it and it was great!  I really liked the parallels between the son's reaction to the father and the father's reaction to God.

I watched "Signs" today.  I am very thankful I watched it before dark.   :noddingsmiley:   I really liked it!

I have also seen "Unbreakable."  I loved it!

The story of faith lost & found is tremendous. The tension of the story is riveting.

However, as a sci/fi buff, I found two premises of the movie to be so bad as to make it a comedy.

1. Aliens with spacecraft capable of interstellar travel to earth, and equipped with "shields" that make them invisible, rely on crop signs to navigate to and link up with their scouts on earth.

2. The same powerful high tech. aliens invade earth, but don't seem to have energy weapons, nuclear weapons, kinetic energy weapons (guns), swords, knives, or even clubs, and can be defeated in battle readily with a baseball bat.  :p

Oh well, maybe I just need to lighten up! ;)

As to the second matter they did briefly address this when the kid was reading the book--he mentioned that they would not invade using weapons because they wouldn't want to destroy our resources.  Then at the end they mentioned it appeared that perhaps they had just come to try and take people back with them.

If one considers these two things then it is also plausible that the crop signs were marking the places and people they had "staked out" since there were "advance" aliens already there.

Just my logic... take it or leave it.

New forum, first post.

I had read on GCM about some people seeing the Movie "Signs."

It's the story about a minister who loses his faith because of the death of his wife. Crop spots appear in his corn field. The signs of Aliens? Yes.

We rented it last night. I was so impressed. My favorite movies are comedies, but this one, though not a comedy, may be my all time favorite. This was possibly the best movie I have ever seen! It's a story of faith. Really. No cussing...maybe the word "Hell" once. The ending is awesome. God is really with him the whole time.

I very rarely give out the grade A+ to movies as you will see from my reviews here. But with all confidence, I have to give this one an A+ and two thumbs up! :thumbs-up:

I look forward to deciding what movies to see based on your reviews. I know we will benefit from this forum.

I rented this a couple of weeks ago, when I was sick in bed.  Excellent.  Sometimes I wish I could see things in my life fit as neatly into place as everything fit at the end of the movie.

On a side note, I somehow did not expect the movie to be as tense as it was.  I was unable to breathe for extended periods in the second half.  Sure it was manipulative, but in a good, Hitchcockian way.

:thumbs-up:

Lee,
Signs is probably one of my all time favorite movies.  I took the teens I work with to see it when it was in the theater.  What a great experience.  It sparked  some great discussion about God and Faith as well.  I can't reccomend this movie enough.

P.S.  Good idea with the movie review section on the board!

Signs was great... I, too, was on the edge of my seat for most of the second-half.

Being a "movie buff", I have seen quite a few flicks. Having said that, I must say that Signs pretty much had it all.

A SoaP after my own heart!... I loved Unbreakable, and share your sentiments. (Just bringing it up makes me think of jumping back on that Superman thread again!).

Did you see the deleted scene where Bruce Willis was bench-pressing in the football team's weight room? They should have left that one in, in place of the other bench-press scene (in my humble opinion).

Yep.  I think you're right.

Well you have all sold me on this movie! It will be the next one I rent. Now I wish I'd seen it at the theater. Oh well. I really liked The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable too! Maybe I'll rent Signs today; it's been a while since I rented anything, and I wouldn't want my Blockbuster membership to lapse again. We went so long once that I had to rejoin, we weren't in their computer anymore. lol

Update to the above:
Rented it yesterday afternoon. Great movie! Thanks to all for the thumbs up!

Okay --I'll give in.

The other parts of the movie were good enough to overlook this, anyway.
