Saving Private Ryan
Band of Brothers (HBO Miniseries)
Platoon (Yeah, Oliver Stone's a bit overblown, but still good)
Galipoli
Battle of the Bulge
Memphis Belle
Full Metal Jacket (At least for the boot camp scene)
Apocalypse Now (Not very factual, but a great movie)
The Tuskegee Airmen
Bridge over the River Kwai

Sure there are some I am not thinking of at this moment, but there is a start.

Soapman you have some good ones there.  Glory is a classic movie.  I have not seen Enemy at the Gate but I did read the book -- epic of Stalingrad.

Son of a Preacher Man

Well, we are in a war.  So what do you think are the best war movies of all time?

marc

Favorites:  Breaker Morant, Gallipoli, Apocolypse Now, Henry V (Kenneth Branagh version), Glory, The Great Escape, Bridge Over the River Kwai, The Dirty Dozen.

Bobby Valentine

I can't believe the Duke is not on any of these lists  :bangingheadagainstwall:

Here are war movie reviews from Milwaukee,

1) Sands of Iwo Jima
2) The Alamo
3) The Charge of the Light Brigade
4) Patton
5) Saving Private Ryan
6) We Were Soldiers
7) Midway
8) Good Morning Vietnam
9) Captain (Somebody) Mandolin (with Nicholas Cage)
10) Star Wars (hey no one said the war had to be on Earth!)

Shalom,
Bobby Valentine

Talked to someone in Syracuse this morning suffering through an ice storm.  The power had been out for two days.

But it's spring here in the Mud River Valley.

I wanted to add a couple.  First, without reservations, Ride With The Devil, Ang Lee's underrated, underseen Civil War movie about the Guerilla fighting in the west with Toby McGuire, Skeet Ulrich and (gasp) Jewell.  Second, with reservations, Gettysburg.  Let's just call it a favorite, since bad beards, Martin Sheen's accent and too much speechifying keep it from being as good as it could have been.

Haven't seen many of the recent movies being listed.

Son of a Preacher Man

Full Metal Jacket
Black Hawk Down
Glory
Braveheart
Good Morning Vietnam
The Best Years of our Lives
Saving Private Ryan
Enemy at the Gates
Dr. Strangelove
Legends of the Fall
[/i]

They are in no particular order.  Marc, Ride with the Devil[/i] is just as you have said.  More people should see that film.

Many war films have two strikes against them.  Most of the WWII films were pure propaganda and it shows.  Also, the censorship issues prevented them from showing the true horror of war.  I guess that explains my choices, huh?  None of the ten I listed make war seem glamorous at all.

boringoldguy

A really good one, but you'll have to scour the video store to find it

Away All Boats

spurly

I can't believe no one has mentioned The Patriot yet.  It's got to be at the top of the list.

Kevin

the scene at the beginning of gladiator is pretty intense too...
crowe just got married, did ya know?

brandt

Full Metal Jacket
