2Pt:2:1:
But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there shall be among you lying teachers who shall bring in sects of perdition and deny the Lord who bought them: bringing upon themselves swift destruction.

Jesus warns us that there will be false preachers among us. Furthermore Jesus warns us that these false preachers will bring in sects of perdition (man-made religions that lead people into hell) and they will deny the Lord.

Deny the Lord? Deny whatever the Lord has said in the Scriptures? What else could it mean?

larry2 - Please allow me to take a shot at your question. Does it might mean that unless you stay in the Catholic Church united to the Pope teaching things that are not in the Bible, you are going to hell. Am I on the right track; I love these quizzes?

If you ever bothered to read a Bible, you'll find that Jesus said the Church is the pillar of truth, without any reference to a Bible.

You will also find that Jesus sent His Church to teach all nations, He did not tell them to write a Bible and pass it out.

FYI...Jesus' Church wrote the Bible which obviously means the Church is indwelt by God. The Bible is not indwelt by God. The Church teaches whatever God leads her to teach.

Can you show me where the Bible instructs the Church not to teach anything that is not written in the Bible?  ::whistle::

If Peter has in mind the same heresies against which John wrote his epistles, to deny the Lord would include such things as teaching that Jesus of Nazareth could not be Messiah because Spirit could not have inhabited flesh. Or, more commonly, who we thought was Christ could not have been. Or, by extension, Jesus/Messiah could not have been both God and Man at the same time.

These sorts of heresies would be consistent between the two writers also in their concern that real "spiritual" people understood that lascivious life styles were not appropriate for God followers. The heretics argued that because flesh and spirit can not co-exist, what we do in the body - the freedom we have in God - is that we can do whatever our urges demand. This would be true, the argument goes, because nothing we do in the body can affect our spiritual beings. Both John and Peter argue against this understanding of God/spirit/flesh.

Not saying you have to buy the above, but it works for me.

The Scriptures are authored by God and therefore I'm not quite sure what point you're making, but your post does remind me that Luther began teaching his followers that they must live a life of sin.

Unfortunately, Lutherans believe they must live sinful lives. I've explained to the Lutherans that Jesus commanded that we do not sin, thereby contradicting Luther.

1Jn:2:4:
He who saith that he knoweth him and keepeth not his commandments is a liar: and the truth is not in him.

1Jn:3:8-9
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil: for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God appeared, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9 Whosoever is born of God committeth not sin: for his seed abideth in him. And he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

Rom:6:22:
But now being made free from sin and become servants to God, you have your fruit unto sanctification, and the end life everlasting.

Those who do not stop sinning are cast into hell

Mt:5:29:
And if thy right eye scandalize thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee. For it is expedient for thee that one of thy members should perish, rather than thy whole body be cast into hell.

The church did not write the bible.. the Holy Spirit did..

What the church did was assemble it together after the original apostles died... probabily against their wishes.

News Flash - Jesus' Church wrote the Bible. God is the Author, the Church is the writer.

I'm addressing the questions at the bottom of the OP.

I'm not Lutheran, not Reformed, not Catholic (any version), not really completely Evangelical, and not really wholly standard Church of Christ.

While I agree a God follower doesn't have to sin, I also acknowledge that God followers do sin.

[My apologies to my Catholic friends. I have no idea how I got on this thread. I will now go away.  ::smile::]

No.. Jesus own Apostles wrote them.. the Church didn't.  It was the church 200+ years later that put the individual books that were written by the Apostles into the New Testament... I would also like to state that I think the Church did a pretty horrible job at it.

The church had nothing to do with the scriptures.. except the requirement that they provide good stewardship of their text and meanings.. and it failed on those two accounts.

You should learn your history.

I also find it funny that the person you call the first Pope.. played a very minor role in the New Testament makeup.. it appears he was dwarfed theologically by his peers... even Paul rebuked him.

The Bible does explain that Jesus came to free us from sin

John 8:34-36
34  Jesus answered them: Amen, amen, I say unto you that whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35  Now the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the son abideth for ever.
36  If therefore the son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.

I don't consider the followers of Luther or Joe Smith to be followers of God, and I know they live sinful lives because the BIble says they do

Tim3:10-11

10  A man that is a heretic, after the first and second admonition, avoid:
11  Knowing that he that is such an one is subverted and sinneth, being condemned by his own judgment.

Those who embrace the Catholic Faith also commit sin, but they are being saved from their sins, and at some point, Jesus will set them free from sin and they will not sin any more

But they were not part of YOUR church...that is my point.. none of the apostles were Roman Catholic.. none.

And that shows in your ignorance of history.

And I will put my knowledge of Christian history up against any Mary worshiper and idolator you wish to throw at me.

But then again.. I dont expect someone with so many pagan leanings as yourself to understand these things.

bibleteacher - If you ever bothered to read a Bible, you'll find that Jesus said the Church is the pillar of truth, without any reference to a Bible.

larry2 - May I then ask why you quote from the Bible? Can those things presented by some group go against scripture?

I do not see the word "Bible" in scripture, but I do see scripture telling some to "(Ex 17:14) Write this for a memorial in a book, (Ex 34:27) Write thou these words, (Isa 8:1) Take thee a great roll, and write in it with a man's pen, (Jer 36:2) Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee, and the list goes on if you want to check it out.

Revelation 1:11  (Jesus) Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.

Revelation 1:19  (Jesus) Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;

I do believe you want to bring forth this: 2 Thessalonians 2:15  "Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle." My question is: Would the apostles tell them traditions and go against that tradition in an epistle? Perhaps the "Immaculate Conception" would be one such doctrine where the Catholic Church has the dogma that Mary was born without sin, and yet the epistle to the Romans states that all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; who am I to believe?

I left the Catholic Church due to such foolishness as this that completely contradicted their own Bible. Depending upon any given sin, they didn't know from day to day whether they were saved or not. They trusted in man whose breath was in his nostrils to give them the way of salvation while Jesus was there for the taking all the time. Claiming to be a bibleteacher, I doubt you can declare 100% for sure that you are saved and going to heaven.

And then if I am right, and you are sure you've passed every test the Catholic Church has for you, you are destined for an undetermined length of time in purgatory paying for sins you committed here on earth that you've been forgiven for; some forgiveness huh?

You never did answer the question "Does it might mean that unless you stay in the Catholic Church united to the Pope teaching things that are not in the Bible, you are going to hell."

BTW you didn't leave the Church, God kicked you out

I've never been a ROMAN catholic... to many people in my family were slaughtered by the Pope in ages past for me to willingly step food in a murdering catholic church again.

3/4 of my family fled France during the St. Bartholomew's day Massacre.. fled to England.. then Scotland.. then Ireland.. then to America to avoid being killed by the Catholics.

Why would anyone in their right mind associated themselves with the ROMANIZED catholic church that has sinned so greately in ages past and molest children in this age and try and get away with it.

One day the Holy Spirit will open you eyes to the fact that the Pope is working for Lucifer.. all the Popes going back to 1054 have... the Lord will look at ROMAN catholics at the last judgement and say "depart from me because you never knew me."

I'm as confident about that as I am confident that the sun will rise tomorrow.

QuoteFor me, it relates to John 15:10-12:

If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as
I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love.
I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
My command is this Love each other as I have loved you.

John 15:10-12

Treat others as you would have them treat you. If we want to be more like Jesus, we must love each person like the next. This is remaining in His love.

As I understand it the question in this original post was What makes a false preacher.  As far as I'm concerned the
question is not really complicated unless some people choose to make it so.  The answer goes like this; GOD IS LOVE.any one that teaches hate whether they use scripture, false logic or any thing else is a false preacher.  Scripture may be    quoted all day and all night and it won't change that.  Thank you JESUS,AMEN.

I was just reading another thread on another board about how the timing as written in the New Testament would have made it practically impossible for Peter to ever have been the bishop of Rome.

And then there is the commission that Peter was to be an apostle to the circumsized (Jews).. were he went to babylon where a sizable Jewish community still existed from the captivity.  Peter would therefore have never gone to the gentiles to preside as bishop.. it wasn't his calling.

Unless airplanes existed back then.. it would pretty much have been impossible for Peter to have been in Rome unless there were two of him.

Just something to ponder.

35  Now the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the son abideth for ever.

I don't consider the followers of Luther or Joe Smith to be followers of God, and I know they live sinful lives because the BIble says they do

Those who embrace the Catholic Faith also commit sin, but they are being saved from their sins, and at some point, Jesus will set them free from sin and they will not sin any more

Teacher I just got to ask you. You seem to point fingers at those whom you think are sinners that don't follow God. So let me ask you as one who considers himself a follower of God. Do you Sin?   You just sound so arrogant and self righteous. Who is a follower of God? A lot of people believe they follow God. but who do you follow? and have you been a perfect follower.?
