Is golf a big part of the movie or just part of the environment of the movie?  Robert Duval is like Jimmy Stewart and Anthony Hopkins.  Their presence makes it a good movie.

I would say golf was part of the environment of the movie. Yes Robert Duvall made it the goos movie it is. He is just suited for some parts like Gus on Lonesome Dove. It qouldn't have been the same with any other actor.
