Logical Conclusions

Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary, that he hold the Catholic Faith. Which faith, except everyone do keep entire and inviolate, without doubt he will perish everlastingly.

Now the Catholic Faith is this; that we worship One God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity. Neither confounding the Persons, nor dividing the substance.

For there is one Person of the Father, another of the Son, another of the Holy Ghost. But the Godhead of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, is all One; the Glory equal, the Majesty co-eternal.

Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Ghost. The Father uncreate, the Son uncreate, the Holy Ghost uncreate. The Father incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible, and the Holy Ghost incomprehensible. The Father eternal, the Son eternal, and the Holy Ghost eternal. And yet they are not three eternals, but one eternal. As also they are not three uncreates, nor three incomprehensibles; but one uncreate, and one incomprehensible. In like manner the Father is almighty, the Son almighty, and the Holy Ghost almighty. And yet not three almighties, but one almighty.

So the Father is God, the Son God, and the Holy Ghost God. And yet they are not three Gods, but one God. So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord, and the Holy Ghost is Lord. And yet they are not three Lords, but one Lord. For like as we are compelled by the Christian verity to acknowledge every Person by Himself to be God and Lord; so we are forbidden by the Catholic religion, to say there are three Gods, or three Lords.

The Father is made of none, neither created, nor begotten. The Son is from the Father alone, not made, nor created, but begotten. The Holy Ghost is from the Father and the Son, not made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Ghost, not three Holy Ghosts. And in this Trinity, there is nothing before or after, nothing greater or less; but the whole three Persons are co-eternal together and co-equal.

So that in all things, as is aforesaid, the Unity is to be worshipped in Trinity and the Trinity in Unity. He, therefore, that will be saved, must thus think of the Trinity.

Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation, that he also believe rightly the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now the right faith is, that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is both God and Man.

He is God of the substance of the Father, begotten before the world; and He is man of the substance of His mother, born in the world; Perfect God and perfect man; of reasonable soul and human flesh subsisting. Equal to the Father according to His Godhead; and less than the Father according to His Manhood.

Who, although He be both God and Man, yet He is not two, but one Christ; One, not by the conversion of the Godhead into flesh, but by the taking of the Manhood unto God; One altogether, not by confusion of substance, but by unity of Person. For as the reasonable soul and the flesh is one man, so God and Man is one Christ.

Who suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose again the third day from the dead. He ascended into heaven; He sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. At whose coming all men shall rise again with their bodies, and shall give an account of their own works. And they that have done good shall go into life everlasting; and they that have done evil, into everlasting fire.

This is the Catholic faith, which except a man believe faithfully and steadfastly, he cannot be be saved.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Amen.

Romans 10:9-10
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved.

...No mention of any Catholic church there...

Even the RCC, says that those that are baptized in the trinity formula, father son holy ghost are valid christians.

Protestants, though the ones that are not similar to RCC, e.g the anglican church, believe they can be baptized, such as those in the day of pentecoast, a spiritual baptism. Yet even that is not a requirement to be saved as many of Jesus disciples were saved before that event.

Catholic means universal. Are you not of the ONE universal church started by Him, Jesus Christ Our Lord?

As a Roman Catholic I do not hesitate to say that the statement I have quoted from the OP is balderdash , and is an unwarranted insult to my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ who are not members of the RC Church but are sincere disciples of the Lord .

Such threads serve no purpose other than to cause trouble and argument , and are gravely lacking in charity .

To put it bluntly they merely ****stirring .

Paulus, I would be hesitant if I were you to call a part of an ancient creed "balderdash."

I do not know if the RCC currently considers this creed to be authoritative or not, but if you take "catholic" in the sense of Universal I do not see a problem.  OTOH, if you take it as the RCC denomination, you get into trouble.

And I have asked Logical in several threads which meaning of "catholic" he is using.  So far he has not answered.

I do have a problem with the creeds (Apostles', Nicean and this one) in the specific wording of the description of the Trinity which seems to be intentionally anti-Jewish but that is topic for another thread.

You are not a Roman Catholic. A true Catholic is not bothered by Infallible Dogma of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

Matthew 16:18 is about Jesus the Rock, and about how Peter was blessed by Him for the revelation he expressed about the Lord. As for what you use the word, 'Catholic' to mean, I don't use that word, because of the connotation. I am simply a member of the Body of Christ, His Church, His Bride.

I don't know the answer to that, but a guess might be that during the service of Ignatius of Antioch, it's use migrated toward not just an adjective but a proper noun that distinguished the true Church of Christ of false movements who claimed to be Christian, in particular the gnostics.

what are you talking about. Paulus is a humble Catholic, a good example to his fellows. If more Catholics were like Paulus, accepting protestants there would be less hostility.

DaveW

Fire - I am not RCC catholic nor have I ever been. But I have respect for the ancient creeds even if I think they could have been worded better.

I would never call them 'balderdash' or any such derogatory term. I am hoping my brother used that term for the way the OP was seeming to use "catholic" - as a name of a denomination rather than the church Universal. (all believers) I am hoping Paulus is not dissing the creed itself.

This creed was specifically designed to bring in errant congregations that were drifting toward modalism instead of a triune Godhead.

Paulus was against the idea made by the Op, that only Catholic denomination are saved.

As am I.

But I am still trying to get the OP to confirm that he meant that (as it seems he did) or if he is using 'catholic' to mean universal - i.e. all the New Covenant redeemed community.

He will not answer.

Brother Paulus, while I respect greatly your many informative observations here at GCF, I have to ask the question: If a devout Latin Rite adherant cannot come here to the Catholic section and espouse his/her deeply felt beliefs as regards the Latin Rite faith tradition, then where can they go?

Ecumenism has it's place, and I myself wholly accept the bonds that tie all Christians together, but certainly here in the Catholic section of GCF our fellow Latin Rite adherants can have their say and receive our respect for their particular viewpoint. I have no doubt that they will certainly be challenged.

As for our friends particular post here, I see no lack of clarity in the words that talked about God, Jesus Christ, and our collective belief in the Holy Trinity. Sure it may cause some type of argument, but aren't we here to challenge each other in one way or another and in the process possibly learn something that we ourselves do not know or haven't looked at in quite a particular way? That's what I think these forums are all about and is why I remain a member.

I stand by what I said in reply # 4 .

I don't think one needs to be a Doctor of Theology to know what is behind the OP .

It is an example of bigoted Protestant bashing and is as uncharitable and divisive as the bigoted Catholic bashing that takes place on this forum .

Of course , anyone can come on this forum and spout nonsense , and I will continue to call their nonsense "nonsense" if I feel the need to do so .

A person who claims to be Roman Catholic can not pick and choose which Dogmas they believe and which Dogmas they don't. The Catholic faith is all or nothing. We have to believe all infallibly declared Dogmas of the One, Holy and Aostolic Church.

I have no problem with that .

Is there any infallibly defined RC Dogma you think I may not accept ?

Catholica

No one is saved by simply assenting to a set of beliefs.  However many can be lost by dissenting from the Truth.  It is not for us to judge who is saved and who is lost.  We are judged based on how we have responded to the divine grace, and as far as faith is available to us, have turned and loved God with our whole heart, mind, soul, strength, and our neighbor as ourselves.  Loving our neighbor as ourselves can in one manner be understood as preaching the truth of the Gospel to them.  The Gospel is the power to save, first because Jesus died for us, and second because it gives us the means we have to know God and to draw close to God.  The farther we are from God's truth the harder it is for us to love him.  Yet let us not preach the Truth with some idea of pride, taking any joy whatever that someone might be deceived, but rather preach the Truth of the Gospel, such that those who are deceived might know God better and be saved through the love they share by the power of God's grace through faith.

This creed is probably attributed to St. Athanasius because it is so strongly Trinitarian, and St. Athanasius famously fought against the Arian heresy which denied the divinity of Christ, and had constructed a massively influential schism insisting so.  Thus in that context we can see what is meant by his insistence that one must assent to the Trinitarian doctrine that he expounds to be saved.  Truly this "creed" is in fact a very minimal exposition of the depths of the Catholic faith.  In context it seems that the author meant that one must believe in the Trinity rather than reject the Trinity.

Thus examined in context, we can have some agreement: I believe that most Protestants would assent to the belief that someone with faith must not reject the Trinity or the divinity of Jesus or else they would not be a Christian (and thus not be saved).

HRoberson

I think it important to realize that the reasons creeds were written included the felt need to nail down certain aspects of "the faith." That means that there were those prior to the finalizing of a creed who believed differently and who died believing differently.

Since truth doesn't change based on the existence of a creed, those who died without believing the specific aspects of a creed, died believing a heresy. Does that mean they are in Hell?

If not, then it is not necessary to believe the specific aspects of the creed, as well intentioned as the creed may be. Creeds are used to define orthodoxy, not determine who is good or determine who is in Hell.

Isn't a creed just an affirmation of what we believe? Obviously, the truth does not change and a creed is not really needed for salvation as Jesus Himself is the salvation.

And what exactly is this heresy that you are talking about? Not believing that Jesus was the Savior or believing in  the Trinity?

HRoberson

#25
"Heresy" in the sense of the developmental arguments of creeds.

My point is simply to observe that people are Good Catholics until we decide they aren't. Those Good Catholics who died believing something other than the Trinity as defined in the OP were Good Catholics. Only after we establish a creed do those who don't accept the philosophical finesse of a creed become not Good Catholics - heretics.

I agree with Catholica.  Only God decides who is saved.  Most mainstream Protestants do believe in the Holy Trinity just as we do.  I don't think the Creed is being bias toward our Christian brothers and sisters on the Protestant side especially since the Catechism of the Catholic Church says that they are united with us as part of the "Body of Christ".  When people see the word "catholic", they automatically think it's the Roman Catholic Church, but that is not necessarily the case.  In fact, Dictionary.com defines "catholic" as "pertaining to the whole Christian body or church."  And according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

CCC 838   "The Church knows that she is joined in many ways to the baptized who are honored by the name of Christian, but do not profess the Catholic faith in its entirety or have not preserved unity or communion under the successor of Peter." Those "who believe in Christ and have been properly baptized are put in a certain, although imperfect, communion with the Catholic Church." With the Orthodox Churches, this communion is so profound "that it lacks little to attain the fullness that would permit a common celebration of the Lord's Eucharist."

Yes, it is true that the Creed of Athanasius started out with "Whoever will be saved , before all things it is necessary , that he hold the Catholic Faith . Which faith , except everyone do keep entire and inviolate , and without doubt he will perish everlastingly"........but this Creed also further explains what that catholic faith is.....that we worship one God in Trinity.

This creed was developed in the 6th century.  At that time, this Creed was referring only to Catholics.  It was never referring to the Protestants because they didn't exist until the 16th century.  This Creed does not go against what Catholics teach.  Christianity was defined at Nicea and Constantinople I, in its Symbol of the Faith, and in the canons. Christianity is dogmatic. We read this right in Acts 15. If someone rejects it, they are no longer a Christian.  However, that does not mean that they are not saved.  Only God can make that judgement.  If they don't believe in the Trinity, they are simply putting themselves in the same category as the Jews who believe in the same God as we do, but not in the Trinity.  Those who do not believe in the Holy Trinity or that Jesus is God are no longer Christians.

Now you , Logical Conclusions , started this thread , so out of respect for those on the forum you have a duty to clarify what you understand about the questions I have posed . Others on this thread are confused about how you interpret the words you have put on it .

So could we have a straightforward answer to the problems your OP have created ?

If you fail to respond , one will draw one's own logical conclusions to your opening of this thread .

Now that you have made a re-appearance , Logical Conclusons , by starting another nonsensical thread , would you care to answer the question posed above ?

I follow unchanging  infallible Dogma of the one, holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

QuoteUnam Sanctam Cathólicam  et Apostólicam Ecclésiam.

One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

QuoteExtra Ecclésiam  Nulla Salus.

Outside the Church There is No Salvation.

The Church consists of those properly baptized. Unam Sanctum was a pastoral document about the role of church and state, among other things.
Why do you feel the need to misinterpret it? You are Catholic yes?
The Chair and Curia have spoken on this matter. Try not to overstep the limits of your particular charism.

The first two sentences of the OP are , and I quote verbatim , Whoever will be saved , before all things it is necessary , that he hold the Catholic Faith . Which faith , except everyone do keep entire and inviolate , and without doubt he will perish everlastingly .

Now Logical Conclusions put this is on the forum .
