In my experience, after 40 years as a believer, God always gives us a desire to what He wants us to do, that is one of the amazing things about him. He doesnt force us to do things that we hate, because he uses the gifts, ablities and strengths that HE has put in us. Yes he has made us to be perfect for the life that He has for us, and where our heart is, thats where He uses us.

God doesn't want our ability as He gives all the ability through His gifts for the purpose of His ministry, but what God wants is our availability that we be opened to His calling to go when called at any given moment. Where He sends me I will go, what He wants of me to do I will obey.

WE all have gifts and abilities that He has put in us that he can and will use for helping others. He also gives us supernatural gifts. As I also said, He nearly always gives us the desire to do what He calls us to do. I have seen this time and time again.
So, for example, one person may have a passion and desire to work with children, or old people, or singles, or the homeless and thats what they do. Someone else like R Bonker, has a passion for Africa, and he works there. Another has a passion to
see people healed, and God uses then in the healing ministry, and so on.

I have never actually known anyone called to anything that they hated, or had no passion for or desire to do. God will being our desires in line with His own, and He has gifted us with what we need for the lives that he has called us to.

However, for most of us, He calls us to work in our own families, churches, communities and among work colleagues, friends and  those we meet each day.

I have.  Several people actually.

One of my first experiences as a believer was having a sense that God was calling me to an overseas mission. I gave it much thought. I like the comfort of my indoor plumbing, electricity and easy access to fresh fruits and vegetables. I begged God not to send me. But God gently persisted - what was more important? My comfort or the great commission? After agonizing for a couple of months, I finally gave up my own will and told God that I would go if he opened the doors. It was then I knew that he did not want to send me - he wanted to know that I would be obedient, even outside my comfort zone. Since then, God has graciously allowed me to serve him in ways that he designed me for, ways I can be more effective for his sake.

In 40 years as a believer I have never known anyone that has happend to. I would go so far as to question what they heard. God says that He will give us the desires of our heart, and as we follow Him, His desires for us will become our own. I have experienced this in my own life, when He has completely changed my desires in a certain area to become what HE wants for me. He is amazing like that. He prepares us for whatever it is that He leads us into in advance, so it is never a shock.

I know those who are in over seas mission, and they have had such a desire to do that for so long, and wouldnt do anything else no matter what home comforts they may not have.
You are right, He uses us in ways that we each were made for, whether that may be at home or elsewhere. Whatever plans he has for us, we know that He has great things in store.
